Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that it has suspended Cardinals minor league pitcher Scott Vander Weg for the first 50 games of the season for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.  So who is this guy?

Vander Weg was drafted in the 33rd round out of Lamar University in 2005.  Here are his college and pro stats through 2007:

Vander Weg’s statistical profile shows exactly the type of guy that I would expect to try to use PED’s.  Certainly no hot prospect, he has been staying afloat by continually decreasing his walk rate, but his strikeout rate has been decreasing as well – which is bound to catch up to him sooner or later.  He will already be 25 this season and I would think that he can see the writing on the wall.  While I don’t condone the use of steroids (or whatever he used), I can understand the desire to keep playing baseball for a living and the desperation that might cause someone to take that risk.
