The organization pulled a little switcharoo at Quad Cities, calling up three players from extended Spring Training, sending two players out to extended Spring Training and letting a player go. The affected players are as follows:
In: Quick D’Marcus Ingram (OF), Osvaldo Morales (1B), and Mark Diapoules (RHP)
Out: Beau Riportella (OF), Andres Rosales (RHP)
Gone: Charlie Pelt (1B)
The system went 3-2 on the night, with a double header at Springfield (Thanks to Grant for the heads up and Az for the assist). All the details are after the jump.
- Colby is pulling out of his slump, slowly but surely. Tonight he went 1-4 with a walk. [Note that Colby has gone 9-29 (.310) with two HR, six RBI, five runs scored and four walks since I made my (not so) bold prediction]
- Nick Stavinoha and David Freese each went 2-4. Stavinoha also had an rbi, and Freese also had a double and scored a run.
- Mike Parisi got the start and gave up four hits and two runs over six innings. He also walked and struck out four.
- Ron Flores pitched two perfect innings, getting a strikeout.
- Jason Motte took the loss, getting only one out (on a strikeout) while giving up three hits and the winning run in the ninth.
Springfield 2, NW Arkansas 4 (Game 1: 7 innings)
- Shane Robinson goes 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
- Brandon Yarborough goes 2-for-3 with a double allowing his second passed ball of the season.
- Mark Hamilton had a solo shot in the 6th for his 4th of the season.
- Adam Ottavino throws 6 innings but they weren’t terribly impressive. The walks continue to be his undoing as he issued 4 free passes to go with 5 hits (1 HR) and 2 strikeouts. Not a good start to the season.
Springfield 4, NW Arkansas 3 (Game 2: 7 innings)
- Bryan Anderson continued his campaign to make my top 25 list look silly. He went 2-4, raising his average to .371. He also technically caught one of two men stealing, but the CS was on an attempted steal of home, so that doesn’t really say much about Bryan’s arm.
- Brandon Yarbrough, getting the start at DH, went 1-3 with a walk and an rbi.
- Jon Jay went 2-4 with a solo homerun.
- AJ Van Slyke went 1-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
- Allen Craig went 1-4 at the plate and committed an error in the field.
- Jose Martinez and Mark Shorey each went 1-3 with an rbi.
- PJ Walters lasted 5.1 innings, but probably wishes he’d been taken out after five. He gave up three runs (two earned) in the sixth after holding them scoreless through five. He gave up five hits and two walks on the night while striking out a pair.
- Luke Gregerson got the save in going 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.
- The story of this game was the excellent tandem pitching of Jess Todd and Kyle Sadlowski. Each gave up only one hit and one walk (Todd also hit a batter) and Todd struck out nine (including seven straight as he struck out the side in the second and third innings after striking out the final batter of the first inning) in his five innings, while Sadlowski struck out five over the final four innings.
- Brandon Buckman provided the scoring, going 2-4 and driving in all three runs.
- Tyler Henley went 1-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Isaiah Garcia went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Arnoldi Cruz (playing third base) and Daniel Descalso each went 2-4.
- David Carpenter started behind the plate and had a passed ball, but also threw a runner out trying to steal.
- A furious comback won the day for the River Bandits. They scored two in the ninth to tie the game and then won it with a run in the tenth on a Luis De La Cruz sacrifice fly.
- Pete Kozma had a bit of a rough night, going 0-5 and committing an error in the field.
- D’Marcus Ingram didn’t do too well in his first appearance of the season. He went 1-5 and was caught stealing.
- Andrew Brown, who played third base in this game, went 2-5 with a double and an rbi.
- Second baseman Mike Folli went 2-3 but committed an error in the field.
- Mike Kingrey went 1-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
- Justin Roberson was the DH tonight and went 1-3 with two walks, an rbi, a run scored and a stolen base.
- Shaun Garceau got the start and went 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
- Brian Broderick gave up two unearned runs in his three innings. He also struck out three.
- Cardoza Tucker picked up the win, pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth, giving up two hits and striking out four.

Springfield actually played a double-header, losing the 1st game 4-2.
thanks grant.
Maybe it’s just Firefox playing tricks on me, but is there a little smiley face in the gray section across from “authors”?
Shhh. Yes, there is.
Kozma had a couple line drives down the line that just went foul; I thought he was going to pick up at least another double though. Ingram showed great range in centerfield, though that was not a surprise.
Todd’s performance really looks like something special. Anyone see it? He faced 17 batters, so that means his opponents struck out more often than not.
Silly WP templates all have smileys hidden in them.
Some of our pitching is looking pretty good… and some just plain sick good. Can they keep this up? If they do, what does our system look like?
Nice little .208 ISO for Jay so far to go with a K/BB ratio of 1.0, nice bounceback so far for him this year. And Todd has been absolutely sick, 25 K/4 BB in 20 innings!
Not just Todd either… garcia, mort, additon, kopp, herron… they’re all looking fantastic so far.
Hey guys love the site. I am getting ready to leave Springfield to get into the real world and also wanted to catch a game before Jamie Garcia goes to AAA. Is there a way of finding out when he will make starts at Hammons Field or is it less structured than that? Thanks and keep up the excellent work.
they are on a regular 5 man rotation, so it should be pretty easy to figure it out. the springfield website also lists the days probables, so just check it out each day.
My pick for organizational pitcher of the year, Jess Todd, is looking good. It may be about time to move him up to Springfield and Garcia up to Memphis. High A is proving to be a cake walk for Todd. His numbers are insane.
I would really like to move McCormick or Furnish up because they are older, but Todd is just dominating and he needs a challenge. McCormick is also doing pretty well outside of the walks. Tough call on who moves up. Probably McCormick just because of age but can you send another Ottavino type pitcher to Springfield when their bullpen is so weak?
It really is amazing how well all of the young pitchers are doing. Just about every one of the high draft picks are off to a great start outside of Ottavino.
fewgood, thanks for the info. I’ll try to get some decent pictures and or video while I’m there. Also does mulder pitching there throw off the five man rotation?
i don’t think so, it looks like he has taken over for adam daniels. if i remember correctly, garcia should go on saturday in tulsa so you can look up the schedule from there.
Buck:
I am also excited about the way our young pitchers have started the season, but they are still only at about 20 IP this season – I’d like to see them get a few more innings under their belts before we start promoting them. Especially guys like Todd that aren’t repeating a level.
Went to Des Moines to see Memphis last night. It rained on and off but they got the game in. It was a really crappy ending as Amaury Marti (he doesn’t do push ups, he pushes the earth down) had the winning runner nailed at the plate but Gabe Johnson couldn’t secure the throw in his glove to submit the tag. The conditions were bad so I’m sure it was slippery.
Anyway, I tried to pay as much attention as I could but we were out in the right field bleachers so we were ducking in and out of cover because of rain and drinking heavily (minor leauge beer prices are a thing of beauty).
Colby looked good, I clearly remember 3 of his 5 PA’s.
1st: Swung at the first pitch fouled it off to the left, 2nd pitch absolutely roped down the right field line just foul, and of course 3rd pitch swing and a miss (Looked to be 2 seemer/cutter down in the zone).
2nd: works the count 2-0 and rips a single through 1st/2nd gap. Beautiful swing. I’m sure the comparison has been made but he reminds me a lot of sizemore.
3rd: 5 pitch walk, runners were on so they pitched around him.
Freese: Handles the bat well, stood out to me. Seemed to be adequate defensively.
Marti: All the stories are true, he struck out swinging in the second inning and it blew my hat off all the way out in the bleachers.
Parisi: Fastball got up to 92-93 . Looked good, but nothing spectacular. I agree with others as he may be a good back end of the rotation guy.
Thats about all I remember from the game, but I HAVE to tell you a side story.
There was absolutely no one there because of the weather. Every couple innings my buddies and I would step outside the gate by the bleachers to have a cigarette. Well, my buddy took a liking to the girl watching the gate and was talking to her most of the game. As we were all talking one of the employees came over to us and asked if one of us wanted to shoot off the hot dog gun between innnings because the guy who does it was a no show, i was like YES!
So, I’m riding around the field in a golf cart on the brink of extreme inebriation, decked out in cardinal gear shooting off hot dogs. It’s hilarious how psyched people get as you drive by.
Also, I invited several members of the memphis bullpen to come out to the local watering hole after the game and talk baseball but I got the stink eye from Mark Worrell. Uncle Rico was hanging out by the bullpen, I thanked him for his services in the bigs. He nodded in approval. That’s my story fellas, fun night at the ballpark.
Roarke, I can see why you’d want to get Todd more innings but if he just keeps dominating, I’d rather see him get moved up and face a challenge. Learn to pitch while getting rocked(if he does get rocked).
thnx for the report, wizard3. next time worrell gives you the stink eye, just flash 7 fingers. he’s one of those van buren boyz, rough bunch those van b boyz. they know how to handle a hot dog gun…
Not sure if PB would make a move right now, until mid season, then they may start the shuffle, after the draft, rookie and ss begins.
Besides they are all having a good time. :)
