Baseball Prospectus continued its ‘PECOTA Takes On…’ series with third base prospects today. This article is probably for subscribers only, but I think I can go so far as to mention that David Freese made the list as a “Very Good Prospect” (which is odd, because that list actually ranks below the list of “Good Prospects”). Allen Craig did not make the list at all. Both Freese (.284/.336/.480) and Craig (.284/.342/.493) are off to solid starts to the season and probably deserve a little more respect than PECOTA gave them based on their careers prior to this season. I imagine that Freese was downgraded in PECOTA because he had never played above high A before this season and he is 25 years old, but after skipping AA and mainting a solid performance in AAA I would imagine that criticism would fade. It is a little harder to understand why Craig would be overlooked by PECOTA, since he has hit at every stop and has been fairly age-appropriate for each level. Regardless, I think Freese and Craig are emblematic of the newfound depth in the system. The outfield isn’t the only position that is getting crowded with solid prospects in the upper levels.

This is a few days old, so I might have missed mention of it elsewhere, but here is a nice story/interview with the Cardinals minor league pitcher of the month for April, Jess Todd.

The system played four games tonight and all the details are after the jump.

Memphis 4,  Las Vegas 3 – 12 innings

  • Jaime Garcia pitched very well in his first outing at AAA.  He went 6 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks.  He struck out six and nine of the other twelve outs he recorded came via the groundball.
  • Colby continues to struggle, going 1-6 last night with three strikeouts.  He stole a base but was also picked off once.
  • Joe Mather went 2-5 with a double and had an outfield assist.
  • Bryan Anderson continues his smooth adjustment to AAA, going 2-5 with two doubles and an rbi.  Jason Repko did manage to steal second against him.
  • Ron Flores, Hugo Castellanos and John Wasdin each pitched a scoreless inning.
  • Jason Motte threw two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and an intentional walk while striking out two.
  • Chris Perez gave up a run in his inning of work, getting the blown save in the 11th, which also gave him the win when Memphis scored in the top of the 12th.  He gave up two hits and struck out one.
  • Garcia, Jarrett Hoffpauir and David Freese all had errors in the game.

Springfield 2, NW Arkansas 6

  • Well, let’s get the bad news out of the way first: Clayton Mortensen got smacked around again. He only lasted 3.2 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks. He did strike out six and he had three groundouts to only one flyout, so his peripherals aren’t terrible. He gave up a walk and a homerun in the first inning and then cruised through the next two innings before the wheels came off in the fourth. An error by Allen Craig and a wild pitch compounded Mortensen’s problems in the inning.
  • On the good side of the ledger, Shane Robinson continued to impress, going 2-3 with a walk.
  • The relief corps pitched relatively well, aside from a run given up by Zach Zuercher in his 0.2 innings. Josh Dew pitched 1.1 scoreless with a strikeout, Bob Zimmerman struck out a pair in 1.1 scoreless innings, and Fernando Salas struck out two in his scoreless inning.

Dunedin 1, Palm Beach 5

  • Arnoldi Cruz was behind the plate this afternoon and he went 2-4 with a homerun, a double and two rbi.
  • Isaias Garcia, Nathan Southard and Antonio DeJesus each went 2-4. Southard and Garcia doubled and Garcia also had a stolen base.
  • Oliver Marmol went 1-3 with a double and an rbi, but also committed an error in the field.
  • Shaun Garceau pitched five scoreless innings, giving up three hits and three walks while striking out three.
  • Brandon Dickson pitched the final four innings, giving up two hits – one a solo homerun – and no walks and striking out one.

Kane County 11, Quad Cities 1

  • Not much went right for the River Bandits as they were held to two hits, singles by Mike Folli and Paul Vasquez. The best offensive highlight I can come up with is that Pete Kozma went 0-2 with a walk, a HBP and a stolen base. The team struck out fourteen times (including the golden sombrero for Matthew Aburr).
  • Eduardo Sanchez took the loss in going 2.2 innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits, a hit batter and three walks while striking out three, but the ugliest line of the night goes to Thomas Eager. Eager lasted three innings and gave up eight runs, only six were earned though. He allowed four hits, gave up four walks and two homeruns while striking out one.
  • Matt Spade struck out three in his 1.1 scoreless innings of work.
  • Wayne Daman and Cardoza Tucker each pitched a scoreless inning, with Daman striking out one and giving up a hit and Tucker striking out two and walking one.

Man, that Palm Beach club is really, really good.

I’m starting to get a little excited about Cruz behind the plate. He doesn’t seem to be killing the team defensively, (I don’t see a bunch of passed balls or stolen bases being mentioned) and his bat is a big plus at the catcher position, relative to the norm. Me likey.

  2. roarke49 says:

The thing with Cruz is that he is playing more 3B than he is catcher now (seven of his last ten starts have come at 3B). I’m not sure if the move is related to his defense, but his offensive line would sure play better behind the plate than at third.

  3. the red baron says:

Well, that sucks then. I haven’t honestly been following him any way other than the Farm Reports right here. Oh well. Hmmph. Now I don’t have anything at all to say. There’s a first.

Hey! My avatar’s finally showing up! Okay, I’m happy again!

Although, come to think of it, I changed my avatar at VEB to the same one I had tried, unsuccessfully, to use here. Now I feel like I need to change one or the other. Oh, the perils of being and internet diva…

Re: Chris Perez — the game summary said the first hit he gave up was on the infield.

I don’t know if it was a hard-hit ball that an infielder knocked down, or a dribbler that a runner beat out.

Either way, that’s the guy who scored the run that cost Perez the save.

  6. fewgoodcards says:

there were a lot of infield hits last night against memphis. i believe 3 or 4 of the hits garcia gave up were infield singles as well.

  7. erik says:

according to FI, Garcia BIP was 15 GB/3 Air.

  8. mikedallas23 says:

Regarding Cruz, I think I saw an article that said they were planning on him catching 50 games or so this year and then catching more games next year if all goes well.

    nice blog
long time lurker first time poster

Freese was NOT listed in the BP article that you reference.
Rico Washington was the only Cards player on the list (and it seemed as though he was an afterthought as one of the oldest on the list)

  10. erik says:

Aaron-please check again. he is most certainly listed in the article. glad you enjoy the blog, thanks for playing!

  11. mike says:

    Wasn’t Perez’s run unearned?

  12. roarke says:

    Aaron:

I think the confusion is because BP still has him listed for the Padres and they have a typo in his name (Fresse).

  13. roarke says:

    Mike:

Not according to the box score. Here’s what the recap said about the 11th:

    Las Vegas Bottom 11th

Pitcher Change: Chris Perez replaces Hugo Castellanos, batting 4th.

Jason Repko singles on a ground ball to third baseman David Freese.

Danny Ardoin out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Chris Perez to first baseman Rico Washington. Jason Repko to 2nd.

Rex Rundgren grounds out, pitcher Chris Perez to first baseman Rico Washington. Jason Repko to 3rd.

John-Ford Griffin singles on a line drive to center fielder Colby Rasmus. Jason Repko scores.

Luis Maza called out on strikes.

  14. VolsnCards5 says:

colby struck out swinging in the bottom of the ninth with men on second and third and two outs….a basehit would have ended the game

i think he is really pressing…someone needs to wash his mind out of all the distractions of people telling him how they want him to play…give it a month

  15. VolsnCards5 says:

meant to say this earlier…i think its time to move rasmus to 6 or 7 in the lineup until he starts hitting…didn’t they do that with him in AA? once he figures it out, move him back up

it will take the pressure off of trying to set up the team

  16. Tim says:

I guess they could let Hoff lead off a little bit and move Rasmus down, but I doubt they will do that.

  17. illinicard says:

Maybe you guys should take down “The Colby watch will be back when he is less depressing” and see if that changes his luck.

  18. VolsnCards5 says:

is it time yet to start calling hoffpauir “the hoff”

  19. shango says:

Garcia is looking like Tony and Dave’s kind of pitcher. Let’s say he puts up another two months of solid pitching at AAA, does anything think he gets the call if an injury or spot started happened?

  20. Nick says:

Could really see Garcia or Boggs replacing Lohse when Mo swings him for a prospect at the deadline.

  21. erik says:

    illinicard-i’m with ya. done.

  22. aaron says:

    Thanks roarke
    that makes more sense
I didnt expect BP to have both the name and the team wrong

  23. UofIx3 says:

I too was confused by the Baseball Prospectus article. Thanks for pointing out the mistakes.

With Edmonds being released by the Padres, that means the Cards essentially got David Freese for free.

  24. roarke says:

Better than free, actually. The Cards were on the hook for $10M to Edmonds and the Padres are paying at least part of that now. So we got a financial savings and a nice prospect out of the deal.

Also, I’m not sure that listing him for San Diego is actually a mistake – BP doesn’t try and keep up with offseason moves when doing their PECOTA projections. The book usually has players listed with the organization they played with the previous year.

  25. cardsfan1 says:

A.J. Van Slyke, Luke Gorsett, and Josh Dew have been sent to palm beach.
Tyler Henley and Isaias Garcia are going to Springfield.

  26. erik says:

thnx again for the info, cardsfan1

  27. UofIx3 says:

roarke – you make a good point; according to the SPD article on Edmond’s release, Cards only assumed $2 million of his salary
