International signing rumor mill
Posted on July 12th, 2008 by erik in July 2 intn'l signing period, Rafael RodriguezNormally I don’t like breaking in when a DFR has just been posted, but I have a real quick piece of info I wanted to pass along–Good news for Giant fans, not so great news for Cardinal fans, but interesting info nonetheless. I’m told the Giants have signed highly sought after 16 year old Dominican OF Rafael Rodriguez for $2.55 million. I’m told that the Cardinals were one of the teams that were strongly vying for his services, and they were right in the mix up until the end, but San Fran won out. Saberscouting discussed more about him here. Rodriguez been compared to Dave Winfield and Vladimir Guerrero, for what it’s worth. No matter what, I think it’s pretty cool how the Cardinals have become pretty big players in the Latin American market this summer.
Update: Now there is also a rumor floating out there that the Cardinals surpassed that offer, and are giving him $3.3 M. I’m still waiting on my source to confirm that.
2nd update: Nope, Rafael will be a Giant.

that would be unreal. i have no clue if this guy is any good or not, but that is a serious chunk of change.
does anyone know of a list of these guys from years past, i want to know how many of them actually live up to the hype.
Ok…was this Carlos guy full of it?
It strikes me as a crapshoot. I mean, 16 is really young. It’s funny because you get this big bonus guys like Joel Guzman who are supposed to be the next big thing that are signed for mega bucks. And then you have guys like Johnny Cueto signed for chump change. Oddly enough, I find it all fascinating.
apparently rodriguez is eligible to sign tomorrow b/c that is when he turns 16, so i guess we will find out pretty soon which rumor is true. it sounds like there are some pretty big question marks about his bat which is never a good thing when you are talking that kind of money, but the potential upside is huge. if they really are offering that much money it makes me think that they think they are out of the running for yorman rodriguez.
oh well, it would have been exciting to see the cardinals spend that much on a prospect, but it sounds like there are some serious questions about the bat and people saying they would only give him half that money. we will see what happens with yorman, but i am already happy with what they have done so far. anything from here on out would just be icing on the cake.
Who wants Rafael when you can have Yorman? Hopefully the Cards can actually get Yorman away from the Reds though. I doubt it, but still they did spend a good amount of money this year.
Now “Carlos” is saying the 3.3 mil deal is for Yorman not Rafael…………
Which of course would be huge.
Erik..how reliable does Mr.Sanchez seem to be?
If you read the whole thread there was another poster named Carlos who seemed to know a lot about the players and seemed to be aware of things someone without real inside knowledge wouldn’t know. I don’t know if Carlos Sanchez and Carlos are the same but if they are he seems to be fairly credible to this point. I’m taking it with a grain of salt but it would be sweet.
Another note….did any one else feel like Luhnow was being a little coy about the Yorman situation in that last DG article? Like he knew things were in the works? Eeehh, that’s probably just me looking to much into things.
I felt that way too.
Erik,
What does your international contact think about the Yorman Rodriguez to the Cards rumor?
lassie-He said he hadn’t heard that.
Hey guys, you all are right if Carlos and Carlos Sanchez are the same guy, than this guy knows what he is talking about. Suddenly, I’m putting a lot more weight on this.
