Shhh -- I don't mean to say they've collapsed. Merely that they haven't sailed through as cleanly as one would like. Dew's had some command issues crop up a couple times -- they're brief but existent. And Motte has most assuredly struggled to get his slider working. It's still a 40 pitch regardless of his FIP. He'll need something better than the existing slider in the majors.

Joe -- I don't think I ever labeled Todd or Mortensen as 4/5 starters.

pickle -- The most concerning thing about Kozma, imo, is that outside of the first month he's been really bad with the bat. It seems like something significant changed at the end of May especially in terms of his ability to hit for power.

Lance Lynn got two infield pop-outs and a line drive was fielded by the LF, so he did get as many groundouts as he outs on genuine flyballs. It'd be nice if the boxscore broke down BIP types a little more precisely.

That'd be a worthwhile project, in fact.

Rasrick: Are you thinking of Corey Rauschenberger, formerly Meachem, who retired this season?

For those worried about Kozma.....maybe this will make you feel better?

"Kansas City: 3B Mike Moustakas.
His .244/.306/.405 numbers are better than they look, given the context (he's 19 and in the pitcher-friendly Midwest League)"

That was said by Jim Callis in regards to the new #1's for teams.

Kozma has been inconsistent, but he is playing full time in a pretty good league in what basically amounts to his first pro experience. He sadly gets tied to Porcello and what could have been...but he is holding his own.

Plus Kozma can stick at SS....not many guys drafted recently can.

Bob, I don't mind you busting me for classifying Todd as a 4/5 starter. Hell, I hope he develops into Greg Maddux as opposed to Brad Thompson with a better slider. I'd prefer we hold on to Todd as something of a lottery ticket. You never know.

after seeing todd pitch on sunday he made me think of brad thompson with a plus slider. now i know that doesn't excite anyone, but thompson has been an effective major league starting pitcher with a pretty bad breaking ball, so i can see todd being a guy that can put up an ERA in the 3.80-4.20 area.

as for salas/samuel, salas obviously has a much better chance of being an effective major league reliever, but the upside on samuel is far greater. i think he has more upside than chris perez. his stuff is better, and he is putting up some pretty crazy strikeout numbers. i know his walk rate is way too high, but we have to consider where he was at this point last year. he was getting lit up in the GCL, and now he is pitching very well in the florida state league.

The way Lynn & Nieto are throwing for Batavia (their ERA's added together = less than 2.00), I'd like to see them get some time at QC before the year is out. Ditto Shane Peterson, despite his lack of power so far.

Meanwhile, down in Venezuela 16-year-old Fabian Marquez had another nice relief outing, and currently has a presentable 3.34 ERA, with 30 K's in 32 innings. Excellent numbers for a kid who's basically a high school sophomore.

While I couldn't agree more about dealing for upper-minors MI prospects, I have to quibble a bit about characterizing Todd and Mort as 4/5 type starters. Their performances just one year out of college portend better than that, I think. (With the usual health caveats, of course.) I'd say PJ Walters for example is more a back-of-rotation guy, and the former two are mid-rotation types. Or am I too optimistic?
