Daily Farm Report – 7/16/08
Posted on July 16th, 2008 by roarke in Brian Barden, Colby Rasmus, Daily Farm ReportsAs mentioned in the comments to yesterday’s DFR, Derrick Goold reports that Colby Rasmus and Brian Barden have been selected to play on the US Olympic team. Barden is a little bit of a surprise to me, but I suspect that he is being valued as a bench player for his ability to play anywhere on the infield and provide a little pop with the bat. I am most surprised that Bryan Anderson didn’t make the cut.
Memphis is still off, with the AAA all star game being played tonight (Nick Stavinoha is Memphis’ lone representative – he went 1-2) so that leaves five teams in action tonight and they went 2-3 on the evening. All the details are after the jump.
- Tyler Greene was 1-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot.
- Jon Jay was 3-5 with a stolen base.
- Mark Shorey was 3-4.
- Andrew Brown was 1-3 with a walk.
- Adam Daniels was the starter and gave up two runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out three.
- Scott Vander Weg pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings.
- Marco Gonzalez gave up a run on a walk and a hit in his inning of work.
- Fernando Salas made the ninth inning interesting, giving up a hit and a walk before putting away the victory.
Palm Beach 1, Sarasota 3 (8 innings – rain)
- Charles Kingrey was 2-4 and had an outfield assist.
- Daryl Jones was 1-3 and he threw a man out at the plate from center field.
- Brian Cartie was 1-3 with a double.
- Matthew Arburr was 1-3 with a walk.
- Brandon Dickson scattered twelve hits in giving up three runs over 7.2 innings before the game was called for rain.
- Carlos Pupo had a monster game, going 3-5 with two doubles and a homerun.
- Ross Oeder tried to make my blurb about him look silly by going 2-5 with a homerun.
- Pete Kozma was 2-3 with a double and a walk.
- Nick Additon had another nice outing, going seven innings and giving up two runs, only one earned, on four hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out three.
- Jared Bradford finished off the game with two perfect innings, striking out a pair.
- Jermaine Curtis was 4-5 with a double.
- Colt Sedbrook was 2-5 with his first professional homer.
- Domnit Bolivar was 2-4 with a double.
- Ramon Delgado got roughed up for six runs (five earned) over 3.1 innings on eight hits.
- Joshua Hester gave up a hit and a walk over 1.2 scoreless innings. He struck out a pair. Daniel Richardson pitched .2 innings allowing a hit and walk.
- Jameson Maj pitched three four scoreless innings, striking out four six.
- Johnson City gave up two runs in the eighth and ten runs in the ninth to lose this game. The damage came off of Jose Mateo, who gave up five runs in .2 innings, Jorge Rondon, who gave up four runs without recording an out, and Matthew Frevert who came in with two outs in the ninth and gave up the walk-off homer.
- Curt Smith was 3-5 with a homer.
- Nico Vasquez was 2-4 with a double, a walk and a stolen base.
- Ivan Castro was 2-5.
- Reynier Gonzalez got the start and went four scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out three.
- Santo Maertz pitched a scoreless innings, striking out one.
- Kevin Thomas threw three innings, giving up two unearned runs and striking out two.

Nico just keeps hitting. That’s a pretty nice slash line for a middle infielder.
I’m also glad to see Kozma coming back around.
who else can’t get enough niko vasquez?
I’m with you on that one… I like seeing all these doubles.
I see they broke up the Lance Lynn/Josh Hester tandem. Does that mean Lynn is headed to QC? I hope so.
Was Niko supposed to have this kind of speed? 4 SBs already. He certainly isn’t wasting any time with trying to shoot up my prospect rankings.
I apology for the thread hi-jack by SI’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Cardinals might consider trading Colby Rasmus. If they end up trading Rasmus for Erik Bedard or one of the Pirate’s outfielders I will lose it.
Cards need to push Jon Jay…..he is 23, he can hit, run and take a walk….its time to see if he is a 4th OF’er or a starting CF?
Maybe not for this team…but we need to see if he can do it……with Colby heading to the pollution rich Beijing…Jay needs to be patrolling CF in Memphis.
Ok….off my daily soap box!
Check back next week when I scream about Shane Peterson still being in Short Season.
Wll, i was at the florida statel league game in sarasota, and i was impressed with eth catches and throws made by Daryl Jones. Greta throw home to nail a runner and some diving ranging catches to boot. also misplayed one pretty routine one hopper but rained all day here who knows… should be fun too watch hope to see him use those wheels!
Lets all remember good Nico right now. I can see it right now. He starts at Quad Cities next year and struggles with many giving him the knee jerk “bust” label.
Really really excited about the kid. In two years he and Pete should make for some good battles in the upper levels of the system (and make us completely forget about a certain Mr. Greene).
Does anyone know why Wallace has not played the past 2 games?
Niko can make me forget about Mr. Greene…but who’ll help me forget about Ferris, Lambert, Hamilton, Webber, McCormick, and our latest apparent college draftee bust, Adam Ottavino? (Sorry if I’ve omitted anyone.)
I’d say the Redbirds’ college scouts have something to learn from their H.S. scouts; I believe the above guys were all drafted in the first 2 rounds; meanwhile, Yadi Molina, Bryan Anderson, Daryl Jones, and Niko were all picked in the 3rd/4th rounds.
Gerardo Mannbel is now at .319/.409/.438 in the VSL (with a superb 21/15 BB/K ratio). Mannbel!
Rasmus on the trade block? Ack. I want to be optimistic, but I smell a Haren-type disaster trade…one the organization comes to regret for 15-20 years or more.
Trading an uber prospect like Rasmus who you’ll control for years at a very affordable salary makes no sense for a fiscally conservative organization like the Cardinals.
No real reason to get worked up over Heyman’s comments. He was purely speculating that the Cards “might” consider trading Rasmus…. and guess for who… Bay or Nady.
ie. There is zero credibility to his speculation, b/c Mo would not be that stupid.
Yeah, here is the quote from Heyman:
“Overheard at the pre-All-Star Game bash out on Randall’s Island. The contending Cardinals might even consider parting with top outfield prospect Colby Rasmus, a major surprise. If so, it may put them in line to land Pittsburgh’s Xavier Nady, or even Jason Bay.”
So he just overheard someone talking at a party, not necessarily even someone that is with the Cardinals. I am not a big fan of Heyman because of his vociferous denouncements of “newfangled stats” like VORP, but he does often have a lot of insider information. This time, though, it sort of reeks of baseless rumor.
From what I understand, players that are going to the Olympics will not be available to be called up to the big leagues in September. My take on Anderson not being on the team is that he’s likely going to be in St. Louis.
For all of the flack that Jermaine Curtis got, he sure is hitting well.
I’m curious to see if he can maintain this next year when he’s presumably in QC or PB.
Rasmus for Nady or Bay is a terrible trade. And it doesn’t even really address the major league team’s needs.
Curt Smith is averaging 1 home run every 15 at-bats in JC. Not too shabby.
Maj went 4IP for Batavia, striking out 6. I’m more pleased that of the seven BIP allowed, none were line drives—something that’d been a problem lately. 3 flyballs, 3 grounders, and an infield popup.
Sporting a 25:2 K-to-BB in 26 innings. Dude’s ready for better competition.
@casey
wallace missed a few games to go the golden spike awards in NYC. he should be back in the lineup tonight.
The rumor over on the STLToday board is that Wallace is going to PB after return from golden spike award. He’s down with QC.

Anybody got info on that?
Liam:
At 11:00pm last night the box score said 3ip and 4 k’s for Maj and that Hester relieved for 1.2 innings. I’m not sure why they took Daniel Richardson’s two thirds of an inning and an inning of Maj’s and attributed it to Hester, but the DFR has been updated to reflect the current state of the box score.
MGW, I’m certainly impressed with Jermaine Curtis’ start mainly because he wasn’t very good at UCLA. However, he is a 6th round pick coming from the Pac-10. My belief has always been if you’re an early draft pick(top 8-10 rounds or so) and you come from the college level especially the major conferences then you should be able to put up solid numbers in Short Season A ball. If you don’t then there probably isn’t going to be much hope for your future(see guys like Mike Ferris, Tyler Parker and Wes Swackhamer)
But Curtis could be a really good 2nd base prospect if he keeps it up. Hopefully he can because the Birds could use a good athletic 2nd basemen coming up through the ranks.
Curtis also faired well in the Cape Cod League, so even with his bad JR season there were signs he could at least do this…just not sure how consistent it would be.
A Pac-10 player with Cape Cod experience, should be able to hit Short Season pitching….not to take anything away b/c its still hard going from college to the pro’s…but Curtis is a guy that I will have to wait and see and he progresses. He has basically no footspeed, so that is worrisome.
I am not sold on the Wallace rumor…it supposedly came from his Dad..but I have never seen him mention his dad before.
Oh well..QC’s or PB…he wont be at either place too long.
plus curtis was a cape cod league all-star, so he has had success with wood in the past
Wallace’s father said after he signed that the Cards plan was for him to get some AB’s in Quad Cities, go to NYC for the Golden Spikes Award program, and then go to Palm Beach.
Well that is a bummer, I was really hoping to see Wallace when he comes to play Cedar Rapids the beginning of next month.
Starting tonight at 3B for the Palm Beach Cardinals…
wait for it…wait for it…wait for it
Brian Cartie
Oh the heartbreak…..I think its a matter of days that Wallace is in PB…but I dont believe the rumor.
I thought it was just Brett, his brother and his mother…never heard him even mention this father character.
