Peter Gammons says the Cardinals are now the favorites to acquire Brian Fuentes from Colorado. He states the Rockies like our farm system. Gulp. Everything I have heard has indicated that GM Dan O’Dowd has been completely unrealistic in his trade demands, like Dave Littlefield type of nuts. I hope they do something to improve in the here and now, but I am just really hoping they don’t do anything rash for a rental. Fuentes is a FA at the end of the season. Earlier, Will Carroll said he believed the Cardinals are looking to the scrap heap, which he also notes isn’t necessarily a bad thing given the team’s track record with some of those types of players, e.g. Wellemeyer, Pineiro, Ludwick.
A little reaction around Cardinal bloggerdom regarding the Reyes for Perdomo swap.
Kyle Sadlowski and Dan Nelson were both released today. Sadlowski’s departure makes room for Perdomo.
The farm goes 3-for-6 tonight.
- The severe case of suck-itis that has infected the major league bullpen has spread to Memphis. Chris Perez allowed 5 ER on 4 hits, 2 of which were homers. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. He struck out 2. Enjoy Memphis for the next month, Chris. I’m starting to be a little concerned we have another Craig Hansen on our hands.
- Mark Worrell followed and retired 2 batters on K’s but walked a batter and allowed a hit. He was replaced by the other bad Flores, who allowed the go-ahead homerun. All told, the Redbird bullpen gave up all eight of the Tacoma’s runs in the last two innings, including 7 in the 9th.
- John Wasdin started, he was again surprisingly good-6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K.
- David Freese went 3-for-5, 2B. He’s now up to .287/.341/.503 for the season.
- Bryan Anderson went 3-for-5 as the DH.
- Josh Phelps 2-for-4, HR.
- Brian Barton doubled, walked and struck out twice.
- Cody Haerther was used as a pinch-hitter, apparently he’s back up to Memphis.
- Tyler Greene extended his hit streak to 18 games, going 3-for-5 with 2 K’s. He was caught stealing twice.
- Allen Craig went 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Jon Jay doubled and walked in 4 at bats.
- Andrew Brown 2-for-4, 2B.
- Justin Fiske started, going 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
- Fernando Salas couldn’t seal the deal, allowing a run on a hit and 2 walks.
Palm Beach 2, Brevard County 1
- Tyler Henley went 2-for-3 with a walk. It’s a start in the right direction for him after him struggling since his return from the DL.
- Brandon Buckman goes 2-for-4 with a 2B.
- David DeJesus 2-for-3.
- Daniel Descalso hit a walk-off single.
- The pride of Tusculum Brandon Dickson threw 6 frames of 1 run ball. He allowed 3 BB, 5 H including a HR and fanned 3.
- Blake King threw 2 hitless innings, walked 2 and fanned 5.
- Francisco Samuel threw a perfect 9th with a K.
- Brett Wallace, Best Pure Hitter of this past draft, went 3-for-5 with a double and a HR.
- My pet prospect Francisco Rivera went 3-for-5 with a steal.
- Tommy Pham had 4 K’s in 5 AB.
- Pete Kozma extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single. He went 1-for-4.
- D’Marcus Ingram 2-for-5.
- Richard Castillo got smacked around a bit but controlled the damage. 6.2 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 3 HR. He’s allowed 7 HR in 38.1 IP, which obviously is not good, but he is still only 18, so it’s a lot to expect him to just dominate the league.
- The slumped has been X’ed. Xavier Scruggs went 3-for-4 with 2 HR.
- Former AZ Wildcat 2B Colt Sedbrook 2-for-5 with a double and a triple.
- Shane Peterson 1-for-5 with a triple.
- Charles Cutler 2-for-4, 2B.
- Lance Lynn 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Lynn now has a 0.96 ERA with 22 K to 4 BB in 18.2 IP. Opponents have hit .179 against him. I know he wasn’t everyone’s favorite pick on draft day, but those are exactly the kind of numbers you hope for out of your team’s sandwich pick.
- Joshua Hester 4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.
- FR’s favorite third rounder Nico Vasquez goes deep, 2-for-5 with the HR, 3 K.
- Joey Hage 2-for-5.
- Alex Castellanos 2-for-4, 2 SB. Castellanos is catching my eye as of late. He’s hitting .289/.336/.535 in 114 at bats while playing 2B and 3B. Hopefully he can stick at 2B with that power/speed combo of his.
- Reynier Gonzalez 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 2 K. Seems like everyone that dominated the GCL last year is getting roughed up, save Hooker, and he hasn’t exactly been great either.
- Kevin Thomas, a former battery mate of Steve Hill at Stephen F Austin State threw 3 frames, allowed 1 ER on 2 H and 2 BB with 1 K. He has a 1.20 ERA over 15 IP, with a nice 3.38 ground-out to fly-out ratio.

Surprised to see Dan Nelson’s been cut. Thought he might have a nice season.
Lynn’s certainly looking like a very strong sammich pick.
I was sort of surprised too, Liam. He always had those high walk rates, so I’m sure he’ll latch on to some sabermetrically inclined club.
Man I wish Dan Nelson didn’t get hurt this year, I had him as a possible breakout star this year, following a strong winter league and moving up to better hitters league along with his ability to draw walks, I was looking for great things from Nelson in 08.
I was at the Springfield game. Tyler Greene looked good, except for the CS.
Related note: how are you supposed to ask for an autograph? What’s the best thing to say to them to get one?
Erik,
Haerther went back up to Memphis to take Rasmus’ spot since he’s on the DL. Subsequently, Daryl Jones then was promoted to Springfield to take Cody’s spot.
What’s the deal with Perez going multiple innings? From the box it looked like all the damage was in the second inning of work. He struggled pretty consistently in STL when asked to pitch multiple innings as well. I don’t get the rationale unless they have already decided the guy is not a closer.
Joey Hage = the new Daryl Jones
I’d like to see Lynn pushed up a level ASAP. He’s not young to be at Batavia, and he’s not going to learn anything there.
Fortunately, we all know that if Peter Gammons reported it there is about a .0145679 chance that it will actually happen.
Dan Nelson was supposed to be released before the season but talked the organization out of it, so I’m not suprised.
Craig K– I know that before all home games there are a few players that sit out and sign autographs. Before and after the game you can just go next to the dugout and just ask for autographs, they all have no problem signing.
Lynn’s workload is probably more important then level of competition, I would have to think.
He was fantastic as a Soph, 93 to 95mph on the fastball with more bite on his breaking balls. Was very good for Team USA over the Summer and for some reason regressed as a Junior in terms of production, velocity and crispness of his pitches.
I tend to think its fatigue from basically pitching for a year and half straight…limiting his innings and pitches this year should really help.
He is a bigger guy, could afford to get into a Pro workout program and get leaner and stronger. He has great mechanics and a feel for pitching, if he can regain the velocity and tighten up his breaking ball…he should move quickly.
It wouldnt surprise me if he doesnt start 2009 in Palm Beach and end the year with SPF.
You drafted him b/c of his low floor….in order to validate that pick, you do have to push him a bit b/c he is perceived polish.
Oh well..off my daily rant….viva la Brett Wallace’s Thighs!
Check out the Cleveland.com link. Too funny, they think Reyes throws 95-96. Guess they’ll be surprised when he shows up thowing 88.
reyes hit 95 in relief a few times at the beginning of the season
where is jon jay, i have been out of the country the past two weeks and have not seen him on the dfr’s recently…did i miss something, or is he just not being as spectacular as he was before i left
ok i’m an idiot…just re-read springfields blurb…see him in it this time
Well people are getting there wish as Lynn was promoted today to Quad Cities along with catcher Blake Murphy. Also Paul Vasquez was promoted to Palm beach and Josh Wilson was placed on the restricited list.
I think Nelson was released like a week ago.
If its Lynn and Addition going back to back thats gonna be a good 1-2. Even though I’d love to see Addition get the call up to Palm Beach
I’ve been keeping a pretty close eye on all of Perez’s AAA outings and in his first 3 games after the demotion he was throwing his slider quite a lot, maybe 40% of his pitches were sliders, and they all looked filthy. Watching last nights game, he was throwing about 85% fastballs. And his slider actually looked pretty good at times. He left a few hanging but he snapped off a few good ones.
And as someone mentioned, Perez got roughed up in his 2nd inning of work. Something that was pretty common in St. Louis.
He did look rough in the 2nd inning. I think he threw 1 or 2 sliders among 20 pitches and his fastball was all over the place. They said he threw 97 on one pitch so he was still bumping it up pretty well but he couldn’t control it.
He looked pretty fantastic in his first inning. Was painting the outside corner with the fastball and mixing in a tight slider. Even the HR he allowed that inning was low and away.
I’m really not too worried about this outing. If he is the closer of the future than he is the 1 inning pitcher of the future as well. He won’t be asked to go 2 innings much when he’s put in the closers role.
Per the River Bandits’ website, Kozma came up big today, but that can wait for the DFR. My question is why Wilson was put on the restricted list…it doesn’t give any details on the team site. Any ideas?
Tyler Greene got promoted to AAA.
good for tyler. hopefully he can continue his recent success.
Agreed. How nice would it be for the Cards to have a MI that can hit for extra bases more than a handful of times a season.
Regrettably, Joey Hage does not equal Darryl Jones.
Think of a ML corner OF without much power, without much speed, and a ho-hum batting average. He would be a Hage comp.
For Hage to project all the way up to the majors, he needs to shift to 3B, SS, or 2B.
Glad to see it was Greene promoted to take Barden’s roster spot. Keep hittin’, kid!
