Update: Lance Lynn will undergo an MRI. He left his last start with forearm tightness. It’s more of a precautionary measure and his manager didn’t sound overly concerned.
Erin Bolen looks at the rapid pace the Cardinals promote their prospects. Some of it’s been good (Jess Todd) and some of it’s been not so good. (Tyler Herron) There is something to be said about rushing a player too fast that could hurt development rather than encourage it. There’s a fine line to walk there and I certainly don’t envy the job of the decision makers.
Speaking of promotions, here’s another aggressive one for ya. 19-year old Deryk Hooker gets the call to the Quad Cities from Johnson City. He’s replacing Nicholas Additon, who was called up to Palm Beach.
Tyler Greene talks a little baseball with Derrick Goold over an ice cream cone. Just read the interview.
Six Muckdogs were named to the NYPL All Star game. They are Adam Reifer, Arquimedes Nieto, Colt Sedbrook, Jermaine Curtis, Frederick Parejo and Shane Peterson.
I seem to always get the light DFR’s. Only four minor league affiliates played. Three won.
- Nick “I love to swing” Stavinoha went 3-for-5 with a double and a HR.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir went 3-for-4 with a double.
- Josh “I’d love to come up and pinch-hit” Phelps went 2-for-5 with a double.
- Jon Jay doubled and walked.
- Bryan Anderson went 2-for-4 and allowed a SB.
- Blake Hawksworth allowed 2 runs over 7 5 innings but gave up 7 hits, 3 walks and hit 2 batsmen. He had only 1 K.
- Randy Flores pitched a perfect 8th.
- Matt Scherer allowed 2 ER on a walk and a homer. He struck out 2.
Springfield was off.
Palm Beach and St. Lucie were postponed.
- Domnit Bolivar and Oliver Marmol both doubled.
- Brett Wallace went 1-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI.
- Richard Castillo had a mixed outing. He struck out 7 over 6 innings but allowed 4 ER on 2 walks and 6 hits, including a HR. My nitpick with Castillo is he allows a ton of fly balls. Looking at his splits page his ground ball rate is a scary 35.3% and 12.3% of his fly balls exit the yard. His HR/9 rate is an ugly 1.40. The rest of his peripherals are very good. If he can shake the gopheritis, his stock would soar.
- Beau Riportella seems to be waking up after a season-long slump. He went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and had 3 RBI.
- Charles Cutler went 2-for-3.
- Adam Veres continues to sparkle consider he was a 49th round pick. His line for the night: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR. He struck out 38 in 26.1 innings in Johnson City and so far, so good since his promotion; he has 14 K”s in 8 innings. Doing a little digging, I found this scouting report from 2005 on Adam at Perfect Game, when he was a junior in high school. “Very good body, great frame, 3/4 arm slot, smooth arm, good arm speed, little effort, good control, balanced delivery, clean mechanics, present 90 mph velocity, sinking FB, projectable velocity, 12 to 6 CB with sharp bite, very tight CB, sinking action on CH, one of the best breaking balls in the country”. Something must have happened between then and now, you think with a glowing report like that he would’ve been taken earlier.
- Ramon Delgado threw 3 innings of 1 hit ball. He struck out 3 and had 1 BB.
- Adam Reifer 1 inning, 1 K. I find the “save” statistic pretty ludicrous at times but for what it’s worth Reifer leads the NY-Penn with 15.
- The Cards did most of the damage against the Astros’ questionable sandwich pick Jordan Lyles. Lyles retired just three of the 13 batters he faced and allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits, a walk and a HBP. Lyles didn’t make BA’s Top 200 but the Astros saw fit to take 38th overall. They have done an excellent job of digging themselves a hole for years to come, haven’t they?
- Curt Smith went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and a walk. His average is now up to .387. I sort of wonder why he isn’t representing the Netherlands in the Olympics; while he played baseball for the U. of Maine, he’s originally from the Dutch Antilles. It’s not like the Dutch national team is flush with hitting or anything.
- Travis Mitchell, The Pride of Parkway Central, went 3-for-5 with a double.
- Luis Mateo went 2-for-6 with a walk.
- Ivan Castro went 2-for-4 with 2 walks.
- Matt Frevert struck out 3 in 1.1 innings with 1 BB.
- Former catcher David Carpenter allowed a hit and struck out a batter in 0.2.
- Sam Freeman allowed a a hit and struck out a batter in one inning. The former Jayhawk reportedly can hit 95 MPH, a pretty nifty feat for a lefty. He has 26 K’s over 20.1 innings.

I can’t wait to see what Hooker can do at Quad Cities. That does seem like a big promotion for him but he has been dominating the rookie ball ranks the past two years outside of one start this year. I guess it is time for a challenge. More than likely he’ll go 5 innings and strike out 17. You know what they say, “that Hooker is one nasty dude.”
BTW, isn’t Max Scherzer the pride of Parkway Central?
Johnson City benefited from 10 errors by Greeneville. Apparently, they all occurred with Alex Castellanos at the plate. He managed to score 5 runs, despite going 1-6.
Adam Veres continues to intrigue me more and more with every outing.
being the pride of parkway central isnt hard… being the pride of parkway west, however, is much more difficult
why is it that the first inning website at times doesn’t show the 2008 stats? seems like once every couple days, stats only go through 2007. am i missing something??
Looks like Luis Mateo has beaten out Niko for the starting SS position at JC…
Hawksworth only went 5 innings. Wasdin had 2 scoreless after him.
I really don’t think so Shane. While Mateo has been getting some playing time there is no way with a 3rd rounder with his #’s is being regulated to the bench. I seem to remember hearing he’s dealing with an injury issue, not sure off the time of my head if I think it was hamstring related.
Ryan,
Correct. Being the pride of P. West is tough. F the Colts. Did u go to P. West? Go Longhorns!

I can’t wait to see what Hooker does at Quad Cities. He has a great baseball name and it looks like he has the talent to go with it. Hooker is a guy I thought would have a big year and it seems as if he is making me look smart. I guess there is a first time for everything.
Speaking of Mateo, the 18-year-old Puerto Rican (he’ll still be just 18 on Opening Day 2009) probably deserves a bit of our attention.
He’s now at .285/.343/.367 across the GCL & Appy, with an acceptable 6 E’s in 41 games, an OK 15/35 BB/K ratio, and 12 steals in 13 tries. Solid numbers all the way around, considering the kid’s age and defensive position.
I actually like Castillo’s game last night–the homer was a solo shot, and the only XBH that Castillo allowed (he burned himself with a balk). The strikeouts keep coming, and maybe most importantly the smallish 18-year-old doesn’t appear to be weakening at all as the season winds down. To have such a fine ERA despite the high HR rate could even be construed as a positive (i.e., fix that *one* thing, and he becomes an outstanding prospect in everyone’s eyes [he's already one to me]). Recall that Dan Haren’s minor league HR rate was once considered a significant liability….
At least Brian Barden hit well this morning.
As I’m sure many of you have heard, the US team got beat by South Korea 8-7. Check out the box:

Our old friend John Gall led off and went off’er. Barden played SS and led the team in hits this game with 3. I would have thought the mere legend of John Gall sufficient to scare the S. Koreans into submission. Perhaps they don’t have the internet in this country for anyone with web access surely has heard of John Gall.
Gall played in Korea for a month or two, so maybe they had scouted him well.
Sad to say, but Hooker’s name reminds me of McClellan. I’d pay Luhnow money to draft a Meade, a Grant and a Sheridan.
I am thinking it is about time to shut Lynn down anyway. His innings pitched for the year including college has to be getting high.
OK, so Scherzer is the pride of Pkwy Cent and Mizzou. Mitchell’s “a” pride of Pkwy Central. Actually, if we are going for the biggest celeb from the school, didn’t the lady who founded the Dixie Chicks attend school there?
KC — we’ve seen that complaint a couple of times. I’ve never experienced it but if I had to guess I’d say it’s when they are running a database update.
