By now everyone has heard, but I’ll provide the link anyway: the US lost its opener to South Korea 8-7 (the details of Brian Barden‘s day will be included after the jump).

I love reading articles like this: Baseball America discusses the “rebirth” of the Cardinals minor league system as exemplified by the talent accumulating at Memphis [unfortunately the article is subscription only].

The Quad Cities Times has a profile of Adron Chambers.

The system had all six teams in action today and all the details are after the jump.

South Korea 8, USA 7

  • Brian Barden had a great game hitting out of the #9 slot in the lineup. He was 3-4 with a double.

Round Rock 1, Memphis 2

  • Jess Todd had another outstanding start for Memphis. He went 6.2 innings, allowing only four hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out six. He also had ten groundouts to four flyouts in the game. The Destroyer was on tonight.
  • Kelvin Jimenez pitched a perfect 1.1 innings and Jason Motte got two strikeouts in his perfect inning to preserve the victory.
  • The Redbirds only got three hits on the night: a single by Uncle Rico Washington and doubles by Jarrett Hoffpauir and Mark Johnson, but they made the most of them with the doubles following immediately behind one of Rico’s two walks which resulted in all the runs the team would need.

San Antonio 1, Springfield 1

  • Brandon Dickson‘s adjustment to AA has not yet ended. He gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. He also struck out four.
  • Josh Dew allowed two unearned runs on a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings.
  • The back end of the bullpen settled down as Marco Gonzalez, Jon Mikrut and Zach Zuercher didn’t allow a hit or a run as each pitched an inning.
  • After a mediocre stint at Palm Beach, Brandon Buckman continued his assault on the Texas League, going 4-5 with a double. He is batting .462 in the seven games since his promotion.
  • Daryl Jones was 1-3 with two walks.

Brevard County 3, Palm Beach 4 (in 11 innings)

  • Pete Kozma struggled mightily, striking out three times and going 0-5.
  • Luke Gorsett hit a two-run bomb.
  • Brian Cartie was 1-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Tyler Herron got the start and had a little bit of a rough game. He allowed three runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings.
  • The relief pitching was excellent, as Wayne Daman (1.2 innings), the Casey Mulligan Experience (1 inning) and Fernando Samuel (1 inning) didn’t give up a hit for the rest of regulation.
  • Pete Parise pitched the two extra innings, allowing three hits but no runs and picking up the win.

Quad Cities 5, Beloit 3

  • Deryk Hooker‘s debut for Quad Cities went pretty well. He gave up one run on five hits over five innings and struck out a pair.
  • Kenny Maiques pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings, but walked four.
  • Dylan Gonzalez pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks.
  • Brett Wallace was 3-5 and Jon Edwards was 2-5.
  • Francisco Rivera was 2-3 with a walk and Oliver Marmol was 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Batavia 3, Tri-City 2

  • Brett Lilley was 2-5 with a double.
  • Beau Riportella was 2-4 with a double.
  • Miguel Tapia got the start and had a little trouble. He lasted three innings and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks. He did manage to strike out three.
  • Scott Gorgen didn’t give up any runs, but he allowed three hits and four walks in his 3.1 innings. He struck out four.
  • Adam Reifer walked a pair and struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning.

Johnson City 1, Greenville 0

  • Nico is in a little bit of a slump. He went 0-4 tonight and is 2 for his last 16.
  • Curt Smith also was 0-4 and he struck out three times.
  • Jarred Bogany had a nice night, going 3-4 and driving in the only run of the game.
  • Edgar Lara was also 3-4 with two doubles.
  • Osvaldo Morales was 1-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Luis Mateo was 2-4.
  • Scott McGregor has been on fire since getting promoted to Johnson City, he’s only allowed two earned runs in 22 innings (including tonight). Tonight he went six innings allowing only two hits and striking out five.
  • Jose Mateo pitched two innings in relief allowing a hit and two walks and Jorge Rondon pitched a perfect ninth inning.

  1. Beloit sounds like a noise you make in the bathtub.

Jess has seemed to find himself now at AAA. Does anyone have gun readings on him. I know I was critical of his velocity in the Future’s Game and I was wondering what the Memphis gun reads him at now.

I watched Anthony Reyes pitch tonight vs Baltimore. I can’t believe that Baltimore and Toronto are that much worse than the Pittsburghs, Cincys and Houstons of the world. Anthony was living at 93 tonight on STO, hitting 94 and 95 up in the zone. The most promising part of the night? Eric Wedge came over after the 6th inning and gave him a big pat on the back. He told him nice job and said he knew he could go one more, but they weren’t going to push him. His pitching coach then started cracking jokes with him, hitting him in the chest, laughing and getting even Anthony to start laughing.

It’s amazing what I a guy can do when his superiors actually appreciate his talents.

I’m still waiting on Motte to get the call…I played ball with his little brother and can remember the day he got drafted. I told him he was lucky to be in the best organization in baseball :) He’s worked his butt off to get where he is and I know how excited he’ll be to know that he finally made it.

  3. CardSince85 says:

HL i see you normally comment on the JC games do you happen to live in the area?

  4. No, I just have these weird obsession with Vasquez because I have this dream that one day, the Cardinals will have a SS they can actually be proud to pencil into the lineup everyday.

  5. Grant says:

C’mon HL, you know TLR is ecstatic on days when he pencils Miles in at SS.

I’m interested to see what they do with Reifer next year. I’m guessing he skips QC, and starts next year at PB. Now that he’s healthy, he seems like a guy that could move up the ladder pretty quickly. Any thoughts?

  6. SoonerfanTU says:

LOL…..let’s hold off on annointing Anthony as anything other than what he’s been. Nice little outing, but he’s strung together a few nice starts in a row for STL. 6 innings, 96 pitches, no K’s? Sounds closer to almost blowing it, than being completely dominant.

    We’ll see in time.

  7. Phil says:

Steve Hill made his second rehab start for GCL yesterday, and went 3 for 4 with 3 Homers.

  8. Hugo says:

Results from the USA Netherlands game: http://www.nbcolympics.com/baseball/resultsandschedules/rsc=BBM400905/index.html

I wont spoil it for those that are going to watch it though.

  9. Casey says:

    Hey Friends!
Does anyone know much about Scott McGregor? Is he the son of the former Oriole starter and what does he throw and what kind of velocity?
Also, thanks to you that run and contribute to this site. I’m a 51 year old, lifetime Cards fan and it is great to see what the system has done this summer. It is a joy to have so much info available on the farm system. Back in the ’80′s(no old geezer jokes, please) I had to painfully wait for 2 weeks to get any info on the system. This is great!
    Casey

  10. Oh goodie, you’re here to.

How is 6 innings, 96 pitches and 0 ks ‘close to blowing it’? That doesn’t even make sense.

  11. RM says:

Over 3-1 GB-FB Ratio and no K’s for Mr. Reyes.

  12. Hugo says:

We are just over 1 day away from the signing deadline. The Cards have only a few unsigned draftees:

    13 395 Mitch Harris RHP
    30 905 Brett Bruening RHP
    31 935 Justin Leith LHP
    35 1055 Shane Boras 2B
    37 1115 Danny Jimenez LHP
    45 1354 Chris Taylor C
    46 1382 Brandon Sizemore 2B
    47 1409 Ray Asaro OF
    50 1490 Danny Miranda LHP

Mitch we know is going to the Navy and Boras is the son of Boras which tells you enough. Anyone have information on the others? Is Sizemore related to Grady?

  13. Hugo says:

Goold had the following nugget on Mitch Harris in his latest Bird Land (which is all about Rasmus’ rehab)

“The Cardinals have signed 29 of their first 30 picks from the draft (subscription required), and only the Navy kept them from going 30-for-30. Thirteenth-round pick Mitch Harris, the pitcher from Annapolis, remains on active duty, but because he’s a senior tomorrow’s deadline does not apply. The Cardinals will have more time to work something out with Harris and the Navy to get him into the organization next season. …”

  14. bret says:

Boy–will we ever stop obsessing about Anthony Reyes? It didn’t work out here. Big deal. Too bad. It doesn’t always work out. I wish him well but he isn’t a “Future Redbird” anymore.

I would like to see the Cardinals and Navy work something out. It makes too much sense not too.

  15. erik says:

Bret-I understand how you feel but i don’t see anything wrong with the other’s comments. it’s valid to be interested in how he’s doing, esp. considering the cards could’ve used his help and instead they basically ran him off. it’s a nauseating drama, but something worth keeping an eye on. i wish all the best for reyes in Cleveland.

While I’m addressing this, I’ve noticed the tone of some of the comments are a little snippy lately. this isn’t just directed at bret and I’m sure I’ve been snippy at times too. but can we all please lose the attitude? I don’t have near the same level of tolerance for attitudes that other forums have.

  16. SoonerfanTU says:

How is it almost blowing it?

Because 96 pitches, without getting a single K, in 6 innings, is ALOT. Means he went deep into alot of counts. He also got a ton of GB’s, which isn’t his MO. When a strikeout/flyball pitcher gets most all of his outs on the ground, well, that screams fluke to me.

Like I said, even if you say its a darn good game, it isn’t like he didn’t pitch any of those for us. It was the poor games that got in him the dog house.

I knew you’d be happy to see me.

  17. erik says:

“I knew you’d be happy to see me” What is that supposed to mean? Didn’t you just read where I asked people to lose the snippiness?
