Jess Todd came in at number ten in Baseball America’s weekly Hot Sheet. He certainly had a good week. He started by throwing seven innings of one hit ball in what turned out being his last start in AA the Friday before, and then allowed one run on four hits in 6.2 innings in his AAA debut Wednesday. It seems his brief hiccup period is over and he’s returned to form. I’m still thinking his K/9 rate is just a tad low but he’s been extremely tough to hit and has demonstrated fantastic control.
With the signing deadline over by the time most of you will have read this, Derrick Goold says there will be no last minute deals for the Cardinals. I am a tad disappointed that the Cardinals will not be signing RHP Brett Bruening or LHP Danny Jimenez, but them’s the brakes. Once again, hats off to the Cardinals for signing their top picks quickly. I’m glad we’re not enduring the soap operas that a lot of team’s fans are.
Still no word on Venezuelan CF Yorman Rodriguez, who I thought turned sixteen 24 hours ago. I don’t know if that means negotiations are ongoing, or what exactly. He’s expected to receive a record bonus, either from the Reds, the Cardinals or maybe a mystery team we haven’t previously heard him tied to before. UPDATE: Yorman is a Red. That’s a punch in the gut. Huge day for the Reds signing Yonder and Yorman. Yargh.
It’s probably about time for a GCL update: Steve Hill, AKA the Nightmare from Nogadoches, is rehabbing with the GCL Cardinals, and swatted three homers in one game on Wednesday. He is 5-for-16 with those three HR and a double. Ryde Rodriguez is hitting .324/.371/.381 but is hitting the ball on the ground over 60% of the time. Anthony Ferrara struggled a bit over his past two starts but overall is doing okay; he has 25 K’s in 23 innings with 11 walks. Eric Fornataro was called up to Johnson City. He had a 1.74 ERA over 31 innings, but has not been missing many bats with only 19 K’s. However, he did happen to strike out five in his last 5 inning outing.
Late inning dramatics for Springfield. For the rest of the field, the name of the game was blow out or get blown out.
- Brian Barden was the hero of the game, stepping in for the injured Jayson Nix at 2B. Down 4-0 early, Barden homered in the 4th and hit and RBI double in the seventh to tie the game 4-4. You can read more about the game here and here.
- Former Cardinal Stubby Clapp went 1-for-5 for Team Canada. Yep, he’s still around.
Round Rock at Memphis was postponed.
- Brandon Yarbrough went 2-for-4 and hit the game winning RBI.
- Daryl Jones has become a walks machine in AA. OK, so one of the walks was intentional, but he drew two tonight and hit a single. He now has 17 free passes in 18 games.
- Adam Ottavino allowed two earned runs over five innings and struck out six. He scattered eight hits and walked two.
- Jon Mikrut allowed a hit and struck out one in two innings.
- Luis Perdomo struck out one in his perfect inning of work.
- Fernando Salas struck out two in the 9th.
Palm Beach 1, Brevard County 10
- Antonio DeJesus went 2-for-4.
- No other Cardinal had a multiple hits or an extra base hit. Charlie Kingrey, Brian Cartie, Nich Derba, Ateo Folli and Matt Arburr had a single each.
- Blake King allowed three runs on three hits and four walks, but only one of the runs was earned due to a costly throwing error by Daniel Descalso. He struck out two.
- Eddie Degerman was brutalized for seven earned runs. He lasted only 1.1 innings.
- Domnit Bolivar has been on fire these past two nights. He went 4-for-6 with a double and a homer.
- Carlos Pupo went 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Brett Wallace went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, but he still had a productive night with 2 walks and a HBP. He is not afraid to “take a dose” to help his team, that is for certain.
- Jon Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two punch outs. He also was caught stealing home. (?)
- D’Marcus Ingram set the table nicely by going 3-for-5 with a HBP. It led to him scoring four runs.
- Tommy Pham doubled and struck out twice.
- Ryan Kulik was sharp but was unable quite make it out of the 8th inning. He went 7.2 and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk with three K’s.
- Xavier Scruggs and Charles Cutler both went yard.
- Frederick Parejo and Jose Garcia both doubled.
- Colt Sedbrook went 3-for-4. He’s proven to be a pleasant surprise by hitting .312/.403.417 in 199 at bats. At this rate, he should consider changing his jersey number to #45.
- Hector Cardenas threw five strong innings. He allowed only a run on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
- Joshua Hester was also solid. He threw three innings, allowed three hits and three strike outs. That’s a line Larry Walker would love.
- Jason Buursma struck out two in a perfect 9th to shut the door. The submariner has a 2.00 ERA in 18 appearances, with a nifty 3.33 ground out to air out ratio. Hey, there are those lucky numbers again.
- Edgar Lara went 2-for-3 with a BB.
- Matt Rigoli 2-for-4.
- Nico Vasquez went 0-for-3 and was pinch-hit for in the 8th. I don’t think he’s 100% right now, I hope he didn’t leave the game for any injury related reasons.
- Eric Fornataro was touched up a little in his Appy League debut. He threw allowed four runs on five hits and a walk, and struck out three. Just two of the runs were earned. Oh, and he threw two wild pitches.
- Brett Zawacki has been a big disappointment so far. The kid from LaSalle gave up six earned runs over two innings and allowed two homers. In 30 innings he’s allowed 29 earned runs.
- Matt Frevert fanned three in 1.1 innings.

We never got started tonight, but Brendan Ryan was listed as the CF in the lineup for Memphis tonight.
Where has Travis Mitchell been in J.C.’s lineup the past few days? It seems like he’s been out for a while now. Has he been benched, moved up, or is he just injured?
Here’s hoping Luhnow can get a deal done with Stormin’ Yorman. He seems like such an exciting player, and having him and Colby in the same outfield in 4 or 5 years would be one of the most ungodly combinations ever.
Any chance Jess Todd gets a call-up in September?
Derek-I think there’s a fair chance. They could certainly use him in the bullpen or even a spot start.
Yorman is a Red. :-(

Did Domnit Bolivar get demoted from spfld to QC or was it a different Bolivar that used to play for Spfld? I am confused.
I don’t think there was ever a Bolivar in SPR. Bolivar started with QC, was demoted to Batavia, and now with Kozma to PB he’s back to QC.
I remember a Papo Bolivar playing AA ball for the Cardinals awhile back. I know he was part of the Tennessee Smokies when they were affiliated with the Cards. I think he may have been a part of the first Springfield team as well.
What is our 40-man roster like. It seems to me that there are a couple pitchers at AAA that could help now as relievers, maybe PJ and Motte. I thought we might bring them up before the deadline in case we can chase down the Brewers for the wild card.

We have 40 on the roster, but that includes Motte, Worrell and Boggs as well as 60 day DL candidates, Mulder and Duncan. Lastly, Jimenez and Flores are possibles and Hawksworth and Washington are DFA possibilities.
