hawk,

From what I've read recently (I think from Goold) is that Motte is learning a combination of a cut fastball and a slider. Depending on the situation he can move his grip a little to make the break less with tighter rotation, or have a much bigger break with more loose rotation.

I'm not sure with his arm action if a splitter would be feasible or not - I thought Motte throws from a 3/4 slot, and I think for the split-finger to be effective you need to to throw from over the top. I personally think a changeup would be the best thing for him to learn. Just take about 10 mph off of his fastball so that the hitter can't sit on the fastball all the time.

Maybe the Cards can get Bruce Sutter to teach Motte the splitter. That would be awesome.

I don't understand why the Cards don't teach Motte a cut fastball or a splitfinger. With as hard as he throws that would be devistating. Imagine having the high heat at 97 and then having to worry about a diving fastball in the lower half of the zone. I would imagine learning a new grip for a fastball could be something picked up during the offseason or Arizona Fall league.

Flores looks like he's cleaning out the left nostril with a little lung pressure, while Motte is blowing out the right one. Figures.

A comp for PJ Walters is former Cards pitcher Bob Tewksbury. Same dimensions, below average velocity. He was pretty good in the majors.

Motte's going to be an interesting September call-up. I'm looking forward to seeing how he looks against MLB hitters.

Believe it or not...and it took me many skeptical looks at the tv to verify...but in the SD - PHI (one of those last weekend games) on ESPN, Brian Falkenberg was throwing, consistently mind you, 97 mph according to ESPN's gun. 97.miles.per.hour. Brian Falkenberg. Our Brian Falkenberg (relatively speaking). The other roll-out of pitchers that night were sitting in the more normal 89-93 mph range, so it's not like the ESPN gun was falsely "Motte-ing" every schmo who threw a pitch, either. The Brian Falkenberg I remember would touch 93...I don't remember anything close to the northern half of the 90s, though. But yeah, back to Motte, I say throw him in there and see what he does. I can't take much of Kelvin Jimenez.

Check out fangraphs leaderboard. There's a surprisingly long list of decent relievers that throw their fastball 80% or more. That's what Jason Motte is going to be.

I think when he hits the bigs he'll be ok Duncan and some of the other vets can give him some pointers on some of their better pitches...Pitchers in the bigs like to share and learn from each other. I'd say Motte will find something to add to his arsenal

Will Motte be able to survive in the bigs on his heater alone?
