Daily Farm Report 8/26/08
Posted on August 26th, 2008 by erik in Arizona Fall League, Colby Rasmus, Daily Farm ReportsI can’t stand the Brewers.
You know the season is about over when you see the AFL rosters were announced. Justin Fiske, Brad Furnish, Tyler Norrick, Adam Ottavino, Steve Hill, Tyler Greene, Shane Robinson and Brett Wallace will all be on the Peoria Saguaros. Wallace and Gordon Beckham are the only two players from the past draft in the league, and as it turns out they will also be teammates. Springfield’s Ron Warner will manage the Saguaros…I’m guessing a saguaro belongs in the cactus family.
Is anyone else wondering why no Colby Rasmus? I figured they’d like to allow him make up for some of his missing AB’s because of his injury, but apparently not. And as expected, he was denied a September call-up. Unless they are really concerned about his health, I don’t understand this. You would think he should be playing somewhere. Hopefully this puts a fire in his belly and a chip on his shoulder and he goes out and performs when he gets the chance. I seem to remember reading Colby pouted a little after not making the team out of spring training.
Yet another Cardinal player was busted for PEDs. Per BA:
Cardinals catcher Juan Castillo, 18, tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol. He was playing in the U.S., in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he was batting .293/.384/.400 in 75 at-bats.
That makes him the fifth Cardinal minor leaguer to be suspended for steroids this year.
Nick Stavinoha was named to the “All PCL Team“. Stavinoha hit .337/.366/.518 for the season. Translate that into an MLE and you get .295/.325/.432, which is decent for a bench player, not a so much for a starter.
Chris Lambert‘s probably a little too ashamed to haunt the blog tonight. He lasted just 2.2 innings for Detroit tonight, but of the six runs he gave up, only two were earned due to a pair of errors. The two earned were on solo HR’s. His fastball topped out at 91 and sat at 89, so apparently his velocity never has quite returned. He threw 49 (!) pitches just in the 3rd inning.
Funny headline alert: Descalo Making a Name for Himself.
The farm goes 2-5 tonight.
- Rico “why am I still on the 40 man roster?” Washington went 3-3 with a homer and 4 RBI.
- David Freese went 2-4 with a steal.
- Tyler Greene 1-3 with a walk and a steal. Here’s hoping he has a great AFL.
- P.J. Walters threw 5.2 innings, allowed 4 ER on 6 H and 2 BB with 2 K.
- Randy Flores allowed one of PJ’s inherited runners to score and allowed 3 hits over 1 IP.
- Jason Motte has to be a September call-up. He threw a perfect inning with 2 K.
- Who are you, Dan Descalso? Since being called up to AA, He’s hitting .471, granted it’s just in 17 AB. He went 2-4 with a triple tonight.
- Allen Craig was back in the lineup tonight, playing LF. He doubled and walked.
- Brett Wallace doubled and struck out twice.
- James Rapoport went 3-3 with a walk.
- Kyle Mura showed some regression to the mean tonight. Over 5.2 he gave up 8 hits, 4 ER with 2 HR. He struck out 3.
- Luis Perdomo didn’t allow a hit but walked 2 1 over 2 innings. No K’s.
- The pitching tonight was excellent. Tyler Herron allowed only 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 HBP over 7 innings with 6 K’s.
- Davis Bilardello and Francisco Samuel threw two perfect innings. Samuel closed it out with 2 K’s. I’d be interested to see where BA and others rank him this winter.
- Steve Hill, playing catcher, went 3-4 with a double.
- Tyler Henley went 1-2 with 2 BB.
- Six errors and crummy pitching killed the Bandits early. Ryan Kulik received a quick hook. He threw 1.2 innings, allowed 8 hits, 9 runs, 4 earned, with 1 walk and no K’s. Add in a wild pitch and a hit batsman.
- Dylan Gonzalez went 2.1 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 ER with a walk and 2 K.
- Matt Frevert made his QC debut, and allowed no runs on 2 hits and had 1 K over 2 innings.
- Nico Vasquez hasn’t quite adjusted to A ball yet. He went 1-4 with 2 K’s. He has 11 K’s in 25 at bats.
- Not else really worth mentioning. Seven different players had singles.
- After hitting a rough patch this month, Shane Peterson having a great week so far. He went 2-3 with 2 doubles and 2 walks.
- Edwin Gomez doubled, tripled and walked.
- Chris Swauger doubled and walked.
- Miguel Tapia allowed 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings.
- Scott Gorgen allowed a solo homer and struck out 7 over 4 innings.
- Jason Buursma walked 3 batters and allowed the winning run. I’ll post an interview with Buursma tomorrow afternoon, and Gorgen’s by Thursday. It’s a Muckdog interview-athon this week!
Johnson City’s game was canceled. Their season is over, they finish in 2nd place in the Appy West with a 36-30 record.

I guess we’ll continue to learn about Colby’s mental resilience.
One tiny nitpick…the QC score should be reversed.
Erik- i think you mean BUR 14 QC 4
Question- when I last saw SPR, i recall seeing Jones in left, Rapoport in center and shorey (i think) in right. Today’s box score shows Jones in RF.I have heard in the past that Jones has the ability to play CF. Is Rapoport playing center over Jones because of experience, or is Jones really not thought of as a CF? His MiBR page shows him with less CF starts than anywhere else. Why would they not start him at the most difficult position and let him prove he can’t do it? Or is it that there are so many darn CFs anyway, let someone try to perfect a different position?
Thanks for the DFRs. They are lifesavers on days when the big club gets pummeled.
Nifty headline on Descalo.
Colby has not established dominance at AAA yet, hence no call-up. And no reason to start his clock running toward free agency.
Per the post…Colby will play in a Winter league somewhere..maybe on the team coached by Jose Oquendo?
No surprise on Colby not getting a September call up. The Cardinals will have at least 6 outfielders as is in September, assuming Stavinoha is called up. Rasmus will be playing some type of fall/winter ball.
Also, Perdomo only walked 1, not 2. I’d like to see him pitch in person and see how good his slider is. He’s been inconsistent so far, but hopefully he can make good progress through the system next season.
The service time is only an issue if they think he’ll start next year in the minors but be called up in the first month or so.
There are plenty of good reasons to have him hanging around. I don’t see what the downside is.
Thanks Erik, I can’t stand The Brewers either…
As far as Colby goes, the injury maybe. I was looking foward to seeing him, but guess that will have to wait. *I was never very patient* While it’d be nice for him to be near the big guys, I’d hate to see him sitting on that bench, and that’s what vibe I get if he were to get called up. But whatever.
Randy Flores is back at it again I see. He seems like a nice guy. But do we have to put up with this again next month. No, I’m not feeling nice, and I agree with the Rico comment too.
One more thing about Raz. I hope he learns from this, matures, and just smoke the hell out of the ball in Winter League. BTW, I love this site.
Here’s another reason why Colby was probably left off of the AFL roster (per the Birdhouse):
AFL rules state that all players on minor league disabled lists must have been activated at least 45 days prior to the conclusion of the regular season to be AFL-eligible. Therefore, Rasmus does not qualify.
They also state that exceptions have been made in the so he still could be added later. However, I do agree with the others. He will be playing somewhere this Fall/Winter.
I’m guessing Rico Washington is still on the 40-man roster simply because there hasn’t been a need to remove him. They still have several players — Mulder, Duncan — who can be moved to the 60-day DL to make way for other players to be added to the 40-man. I don’t think Rico is holding anybody back at this time.
Well Jawac, if those rules were followed neither Hill or Norrick would be on the roster. I think Norrick is on the DL currently.
Like I said, exceptions have been made before. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t point to this rule as a reason why Colby wasn’t sent though.
Phelps up, Garcia down.
