Josh Phelps got the call to St. Louis, while Jaime Garcia was sent down and Mark Mulder was shifted to the 60-day DL. In the same article LaRussa hints that Garcia will probably not get a September call up due to the number of innings he has already pitched this season. I approve of that line of thinking, especially after he had the elbow strain at the end of last season.

Four teams were in action today, all the details are after the jump.

Iowa 4, Memphis 6

Tulsa 3, Springfield 5

St. Lucie 1, Palm Beach 9 (Game One)

  • Nick Additon pitched great, allowing only an unearned run over six innings on three hits and a walk. He struck out four.
  • The Casey Mulligan Experience pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a pair.
  • Matthew Arburr was 2-4 with a pair of doubles.
  • Antonio DeJesus and Paul Vasquez were each 2-3.
  • Mike Folli was 2-3 with a triple and Brian Cartie was 2-3 with a double.
  • Steve Hill was 1-4 with a double and Charles Kingrey was 1-3 with a triple.

St. Lucie 2, Palm Beach 1 (Game Two)

  • The Cards should have saved some of their hits from the first game, as singles by Antonio DeJesus and Mike Folli were the only hits on the game.
  • Brian Cartie was 0-1 with a pair of walks and a stolen base.
  • Eddie Degerman and Pete Parise each pitched a pair of scoreless innings.
  • Wayne Daman gave up a pair of runs over three innings on one hit and two walks (the one hit was a homer). He struck out two.

Quad Cities 3, Burlington 4

Batavia and Mohoning Valley were Postponed

Colby Rasmus was 2-4 with a double and a walk in the Gulf Coast League.

With the call-ups coming…does anyone see a shocking call-up? Like maybe Wallace, Anderson, or Todd? We all know Stav, Flores, etc. Just wondering if anyone had some info on any of the big names

P.S.-Counting down the days til Motte’s MLB debut :)

  2. nms says:

I don’t think there is any way that Wallace, Anderson, or Todd will get called up. They do not have to be protected for the 40 man roster yet and none of them are projected to start in St. Louis next season. I certainly hope Freese gets the call–he has certainly earned it.

  3. I’d approve of that thinking as well, but that means Randy #$%&#(*%U#(*U Flores is the secondary LOOGY again.

    This can not stand!

  4. Kyle says:

I sure do miss seeing Kozma’s name in the DFR.

  5. Bill says:

Not about the farm system, but about the DFR itself: is anyone else having trouble with this page flashing to a really obnoxious ad right after the article, down to the jump, displays for the first time? It seriously detracts from the site, IMO, and needs to be fixed.

So back to the farm system: I endorse the thinking about Senor G, this is not the time to stress his arm. However, a second LOOGY seems like a good idea, because all the other rosters will be expanding too, not just ours. Tactical strokes beget tactical counterstrokes, and the need for same.

What is the product being advertised Bill? I can let them know. (Or you can just use Firefox and use Adblock.)

  7. Memphis25 says:

All those late nights out fighting crime or whatnot, must be catching up with Niko, He now has 13 K’s in 28 AB’s over his first 7 games at QC.

  8. Grant says:

I get those same pop-ups. It keeps showing an ad for some crappy tennis video game. I use Firefox too, so I’m not sure what the deal is.

I think Niko is, dare I say, wearing down. I can’t wait to see what kind of damage he can do over a full season though.

  9. poorcollegeguy says:

Also getting the pop-up but not every time, i can deal with it.

Something on this website that scares me every time i see it…..

“Ron Flores pitched a pair of scoreless innings and Kelvin Jimenez pitched a scoreless frame.”

    but this helps…

“Jason Motte got the save by pitching a perfect ninth, striking out two.”

  10. Matt says:

How hard did Jamie Moyer throw when he came up? I ask because I know Additon only throws in the mid-80s but it has to be easier to find a comparable lefty with Major League success than, say, P.J. Walters, who he seems to have taken after.

  11. Liam says:

I don’t know what that is, Erik, but it hits me too.

Something in the ad causes the page to stop loading–when it happens, I hit refresh and the page loads fine. It’s not a specific advertisement, it just happens sometimes.

  12. Merry CRasmus says:

I’m excited about seeing Motte up too. He’s sold me with this season.

  13. BigJawnMize says:

I am having a hard time figuring Addition out, as well. I have seen him pitch and I have to say no one really squares up the bat on anything he throws. The two times I have seen him pitch I have only seen one hard hit ball.

  14. Bill says:

Yup, the tennis ad. It isn’t the worst thing to have Maria Sharapova looking back at you from a computer screen, but she’s not what I’m here for, and she gets in the way of FR.

I’m still not sold on Motte. A fast ball that straight is going to get blasted in the bigs. But let’s see what he can do.

  15. Matt says:

Is it possible Boggs recent troubles are due to a focus on secondary pitches (the main criticism against him), rather than focusing just on results?

  16. Double A says:

I knew Arnoldi Cruz went on the DL, but at that time I didn’t think it was for anything that serious or for such a long recovery duration. Anyone know what he suffered? Is he out for the year?

If my memory is correct, Moyer wasn’t necessarily a soft-tosser when he came up. Arm injuries and age forced him down the path of a slow, precise, off-speed arsenal.

  17. JPsell45 says:

I would think Anderson will get a call up. A lot of teams will have a third catcher on the roster. But he will most likely be the back up catcher next year. The only thing more likely than that is him being traded during the off season. Package him with one of our surplus of outfielders and a pitcher and we might get something that the team will need.

  18. AC says:

Tony “Arni” Cruz had Left wrist injury. He hurt it early in the season and and has been trying to play through it but, then reinjuried it again about a month and half ago.

  19. Double A says:

Thanks AC. That doesn’t sound good…a month and a half gone on a wrist injury that apparently wasn’t identified as needing surgery or having anything broken. :-\

Apologies for the bad karma here, but I get the impression Bryan Anderson is the second coming of Ben Davis. Deal him, Ryan and Schumak for more needed assets.
