Redbird President, David Chase, is saying all the right things about the club. Memphis and St. Louis have until September 17th to re-up on their affiliation.
Baseball America is rolling out top ten lists on summer leagues.
- D’Angelo Jimenez was 2-for-3.
- Mark Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double.
- Mitchell Boggs sends the Redbirds out with a great final start. He went 7 innings striking out 6. He walked 2 allowed just three hits including a solo shot for his only earned run. He’s not been called up the the majors according to any reports. He should be in the mix for a rotation job next season but another year starting in Memphis wouldn’t be the end of the world as he still needs a third pitch to complement his fastball-curveball combo.
- Mark Worrell walked 2 and struck out 2 in a scoreless inning of work. Worrell is, to put it mildly, getting shafted as pitchers like Jimenez and Flores get the call before him. Admittedly, he struggled in his 4 innings at the majors this year but so did both of Flores and Jimenez as well. Meanwhile, Worrell was destroying the minor leagues striking out 80 in 58 innings posting a FIP under 3.00. He’s actually been harder on lefties than righties but he deserved a callup.
- Jason Motte, who is getting called up, had a shaky save allowing 3 hits (including a solo jack) for his 9th save.
- James Rapoport was 3-for-4.
- Brandon Buckman was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Kinda strange outing for Justin Fiske. He went 6.2 outings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 1. That’s 19 outs in play. He was the model of efficieny needing only 63 pitches.
- Josh Kinney had a rough outing allowing 3 ER on 3 hits taking the loss.
- Fernando Salas didn’t do him any favors allowing 2 inherited runners to score. He retired 2 batters allowing 1 hit but took his 9th blown save.
- The River Bandits were shut down by 19 year old Michael Pineda. He struck out 14 while tossing a complete game one-hitter.
- Jameson Maj got the start allowing 6 hits over 3.2 innings for 2 ER. He walked 2 and struck out 2.
- Scott McGregor also allowed 6 hits over 3.0 innings for 3 runs (2 earned).
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Colt Sedbrook was 3-for-6.
- Shane Peterson was 2-for-6 with a double and a HR.
- Charles Cutler was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Chris Swauger had a 2 run HR.
- 5 errors by State College helped the Batavia bats. Batavia is currently in 1st place in their division.
- Scott Gorgen went 5 innings allowing 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1.
- Miguel Tapia allowed 1 hit and struck out 4 over 3 innings.
- LaCurtis Mayes struck out 2 in a perfect inning.

There aren’t enough negative adjectives to describe what this joke of an organization has done to Mark Worrell. They should just trade him or release him so he can get a legitimate opportunity to pitch.
I’d love to see St. Louis stick with Memphis as their Triple A team. Hope they get the deal done soon. Was nice to see them end a good note, and they were above the .500 mark.
Thanks again everyone for keeping us up to date with all that went on this season.
Color me different, but how can you say that Worrell has been shafted when he HAS pitched in the bigs and proved highly hittable there? From the moment he first started to show promise, there have been concerns that his effectiveness in the minors stemmed more from his funky delivery than from real stuff, and that that wouldn’t be enough to get guys out at the top level. That’s exactly what has happened. Why is recognition of that “shafting” him?

Boggs wins ERA Title for PCL
Bill — So let’s see. We know Worrell is hittable based on 4 MLB innings but Kelvin Jimenez we still need to see more to figure that out? Worrell has out-pitched Jimenez the entire year; not calling him up seems like a pretty definite slap in the face.
As far as his stuff goes, it’s probably not as good as other pitchers. But part of what makes some pitchers difficult to hit is the deceptive delivery. It’s far too premature to say he can’t retire big league hitters based on 4 MLB innings. Guys like Cla Meredith, Chad Bradford and others don’t have great stuff — they come from a crazy arm slot that sneaks up on same handed hitters.
The Cardinals aren’t recognizing that he can’t retire MLB hitters — they don’t know that yet — they are playing favorites with retread relievers.
Bill – how is 4 innings enough to prove effective or uneffective. KJ has had way more than 4 innings and proven time and time again that he cannot consistently get hitters out yet he gets called up everytime we need someone it seems like. That is why people feel Worrell has been shafted. Give the guys a little mop up time to work the nerves out and more than 4 innings before we go back to the KJ well for more of the same hittable crap.
Worrell – Agreed – He should get a shot. Seems to me that he is the Franklin/Springer upgrade (at a lower price no less). Admittedly Spring has had a good year and Franklin hasn’t been terrible, but the model for next year should include Worrell as the 7th inning man with a chance to be more… What is really strange is that at the beginning of the season I BELIEVE derrik Gould reported Worrell was the highest rated pitcher in the organization using their proprietary system…. Interesting that he hasn’t gotten much of a shot. It smells to me like a La Russa/Duncan call vs. a Mozelak call. We need to watch that….
Cardinals need an OF’er.
They currently got Ludwick, Skippy, Stavinoha, Ankiel and gag, Lopez. Skippy can’t play vs LH, Stavinoha isn’t a very good defensive OF’er nor does he seem to have any power vs ML pitching. Ankiel is still suffering from the gut wound.
What would you do?
Robinson and Haerther weren’t good this year. Jay is on the DL. Rasmus is too much of a bleepingslacker to even be considered by the Don. Seriously Colby, what was with you taking Wednesday’s off to go to get B-B-Q with your buddies instead of focusing on baseball and playing ‘the right way’, like batting the pitcher 8th and playing Aaron Miles at SS and Felipe Lopez in LF.
I’m sorry, I think I blacked out.
Anyways, so you move down to Springfield. Daryl Jones? Do you give a guy who was playing A ball in April a September call-up? Probably not, as he’s lefthanded and doesn’t solve your problems of having someone to fill in for Skipperoo.
Who knew our area of ‘depth’ in the organization would have nothing to yield when we need it?
You might want to watch the language there, Chief.
Woah, I didn’t even realize that all rolled out. I apologize for the language, it won’t happen again.
Mark Worrell didnt even get a fair chance…. this guy has be royaly screwed his whole career by the Cards… and its happened once again! How can you label someone after 4 apperances in the Big Leagues??? He gave up a total of 5 runs (2 in which someone else allowed for him and a 3 run homer)! Get a clue!
Wow that pendulum swung pretty quickly to the other extreme.
Worrell has moved up the ladder at a pretty steady pace. I don’t know how the org has done anything questionable up to this point much less his whole career. I’m willing to listen to examples but I think Worrell has largely been promoted in an appropriate fashion.
Rapoport was hot down the stretch, I think he hit .452 in his last 10 games and yes Worrell deserved a call-up in my opinion
Proved highly hittable in 5 2/3 innings? Oh but for those 2 fateful days, June 12 -13. He did what he needed to for 4 years beforehand. He’s done what he needed to since. But none of that matters. He proved what he is June 12 and June 13. Let’s really make sure Jimenez sucks instead.
Sorry – just can’t get behind it. I’m gonna have to side with those that think we should use this as an audition for the guys that might be able to help in the future. I thought Worrell stood a better chance of being one of those guys than Kelvin. Would be nice to find out while the games don’t matter, at least, but apparently the organization has formed their opinion on him. I am glad Motte is going to get a couple chances apparently though.
Azruavatar…. Actually Mark won the Minor League Relief Award in his first season in 2005 with 38 saves and still didnt advance to AA at any time that season. And whoever can label someone after 4 outings should be a MLB scout in the Hall of Fame… then teams could just ask you instead of watching the player develop into big league ready or not big league ready.
