Sorry for the tardiness this DFR. Just one team is still standing.

Matthew Leach confirms the Cards will not call up Colby and concludes that it is the right decision. I know we already knew that Colby would not be up, but Leach’s reasoning as to why not is hard to argue with.

Last night was the first night of the NYPL playoffs. MiLB.com looks at who’s who on the Muckdog roster. (Minor quibble: Um, Gorgen was not an all star, unless you are talking about his twin brother Matt. He probably should have been, but was not.)

Batavia 3, Lowell 4 (12 innings)

  • Edwin Gomez went 3-5 with a double.
  • Charles Cutler doubled and walked.
  • Hector Cardenas struck out ten in six innings pitched and allowed just one hit, but walked four and allowed one earned run.
  • The ‘dogs allowed a two-run, eighth-inning lead slip away no thanks to Ramon Delgado and the normally solid Adam Reifer. Reifer fanned three in 1.1 innings of work but a pair of hits and walks, including a HR against Will Middlebrooks.
  • Jason Buursma walked a pair and allowed a pair of hits over 1.2. Zach Pitts didn’t allow any of his Buursma’s runners to score, but then walked three and allowed a hit in the 12th.

The Muckdogs are now down 1-0 in the NYPL Playoffs against Lowell, a Red Sox affiliate that is within about a half hour of driving distance from Fenway Park. C’mon boys! “Red Sawx Nation” is enough to make a person sick, so please stop them! Side note: Any time I see a person with a Boston hat in Iowa, I think to myself the “B” must stand for Bandwagon.

I disagree on Rasmus not being called up. I believe it was Saturday’s game where Stavinoha had to be put in as a defensive replacement after Skip was pinch hit for against a lefty. When you only have 3 legitimate defensive outfielders on the active roster, one isn’t healthy and one can’t hit lefties, there is no reason not to have another legitimate outfielder on the roster for late inning defense as long as you believe you’re still in it, which I’m sure LaRussa does. They were even considering putting Brendan Ryan in the outfield Saturday. I’m not saying Rasmus should have come up and started right away, but it wouldn’t have hurt to have him around the club and finish games in the outfield after pinch hitters were used, since they didn’t have anyone in that role.

If Pujols goes through with the surgery and is not ready until sometime in May, who starts the season at 1B?

    - Glaus with Freese playing 3B and then move Freese to the 1B/3B backup when Pujols comes back?

  3. erik says:

Hmmm…I don’t know. Maybe they bring back Josh Phelps?

  4. Hugo says:

Or have Mather play 1st? Duncan won’t be back will he? Maybe we sign Bonds? I really just want AP to be healthy I could care less who fills in.

I was just wondering if you guys are going to give updates on the winter leagues.
I know Tony Cruz got drafted in the Dominican winter league. Did anybody else get drafted down there?

  6. erik says:

Yes, we’ll most certainly follow the winter leagues, esp. considering Colby will be going somewhere. I don’t know who else is going where, but we’ll stay on top of it.

  7. ArRedbird says:

Palm Beach reliever Francisco Samuel was drafted along with Tony Cruz for the Dominican winter league.
