Matthew Leach chatted with fans today, and answered some prospect related questions:

Q: Is Colby Rasmus going to play winter ball anywhere, since he isn’t being called up?
Leach: My understanding is that he will play in a winter league somewhere, though I don’t know that it’s been determined where. Puerto Rico with Jose Oquendo might be a good fit, but the competition level in that league may not be up to the old standards this year.

Q: What do you think of a back end of the bullpen of Motte and Perez in 2009?
Leach: I’d say more likely 2010 for those two guys going the eighth and ninth back-to-back. I’m very high on both of them, but I’m not convinced that immediately is the time. Put it this way: Perez is much more likely to be the guy in the ninth next year than Motte is to be the guy in the eighth at the start of the year. Motte will likely be in the mix, but I suspect they’ll bring him along somewhat carefully at first.

Q: When, if at all, will the Cardinals see David Freese?
Leach: Ideally, late next year, with an eye toward figuring out whether he’s Glaus’ replacement in 2010.

I’ve been really surprised lately by all the “Wallace for Trade 2010″ talk that I have heard. The organization drafted him, he has hit the crap out of the ball and now all the press is that his glove just doesn’t get it done…kinda upsetting. If the organization lets him get away, they might be trading away a 300/30/100 player and as La Russa should know, THAT is an impact bat

Edit – that should be 2009, not 2010

I’m with Erik on this one. Wallace, by all accounts, projects to be pretty much a .300/.400/.500 hitter. Even if he’s -15 to -20 runs at third base, his offense makes up for it at that level. Now if he was a .300/.350/.425 hitter it’d be a different story – I’d say move his pear shaped body to LF or trade him. But he’s the ‘impact bat’ that Tony keeps claiming we don’t have.

I checked the box last night and (at that time) Batavia was losing 8-2. What a wonderful surprise this morning. What a comeback!!! Wow. Pitching was poor but what a comeback by the offense.
