We are so very near the end, but thankfully Batavia has kept the DFR’s alive for a little while longer. Derrick Goold follows up the UCB’s top seven lists with his own. His methodology was a little different from Erik’s, as he didn’t consider Perez, Mather, Garcia or Boggs eligible. It’s always good to get DG’s take on the prospects.

In this blurb from Matthew Leach this afternoon, he says that TLR says that there is no thought of bringing up Freese or Rasmus or anyone else due to the injuries to Glaus and Ankiel. We already knew that Rasmus wasn’t coming up, but I had kind of hoped that perhaps Freese might get a shot at some playing time in the bigs while Glaus is hurting [note: as I am typing this sentence, Felipe Lopez commits two errors at third base in the second inning of the Cards/Cubs game tonight].

And Batavia keeps the DFR’s coming as they win the best of three series against the Lowell Spinners to advance to the finals against the Jamestown Jammers.

Lowell 2, Batavia 3

  • Adam Veres, a late round draft pick this year that I like a lot, had a great outing. He went seven innings and only gave up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven.
  • Ramon Delgado relieved in the eighth and struck out all three batters he faced.
  • Adam Reifer made it interesting in the ninth, giving up a run on a hit and a walk before settling down and closing out the game.
  • The offense came from the bottom of the lineup: Chris Swauger was 1-3 with a walk.
  • Frederick Parejo was 2-4, Xavier Scruggs was 1-3 and Jose Garcia was 2-3.

Veres has done surprisingly well at Batavia, since he came there from a junior college.

Sometimes I just don’t get Tony and his desires to keep the young guys out. I get that he has more faith in a “veteran” such as Lopez because he has more time in the majors, but if you have guys who can fill your hole and give you good defense, why not use them? I really do believe that Tony has a vendetta against Colby now. It just makes sense…bring up a true centerfielder who can run well and catch everything hit to him. I’d rather see Rasmus in the outfield than Lopez and Josh Phelps.

    Our 49th-round pick out-pitched Boston’s supplemental 1st-rounder and 3rd-rounder tonight. That’s what I like to see.

Veres has had a really solid start to his pro career. He ‘s a guy that has definitely intrigued me, and I look forward to seeing how he progresses.

    Good Luck Muckdogs!

Gould had Niko in his top 5 10 days ago and now (even w/o Perez) he isn’t in his top 8. Hmmmmm.

My guess as to why the Cards are resisting a recall of either Rasmus or Freese is that both players do not have the number of years of experience to require either to be put on the 40 man roster. Accordingly the Cards would strongly prefer to be able to go into the 2009 season without adding them, thus saving 2 spots on the 40 man roster to either sign free agents or to protect other prospects who do have the number of years experience to require addition to the 40 roster to avoid possible loss in the Rule 5 draft. Finally an unused 40 man roster spot allows for the possibility for the Cards to make a Rule 5 draft pick (like Brian Barton). If you can juggle a player such as Barton for the ensuing season that you have to keep him on the 25 man roster (including phantom disabled list stints), the Rule 5 draft is a very good way to pick up good young prospects (like Barton, Hamilton TX) or relievers (like Soria KC), particularly lefties (Joe Hoerner), who are often unprotected.

I’m much more inclined to clamor for Barden than for Freese. Barden is with the team already so the “don’t want to use a 40-man spot” argument doesn’t fly.

That said, I’m not holding my breath.
