Derrick Goold has more on the newest Cardinal, Charlie Manning. I like the fact that it’s a low-risk move, and in spite of the Cardinals sending several lefties to the AFL, none are even close to being a slam dunk to making the roster. And how can I not root for a guy named Manning that is donning the birds on the bat?
A great interview of Alex Castellanos done by Dustin Mattison at the Birdhouse.
Another reason Jason Isringhausen isn’t an attractive free agent. He’s a Type A. Fingers crossed some team will sign him other than the Cardinals, but I’m not holding my breath.
- Brett Wallace continues to struggle. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and is 2-for-16 so far in the AFL.
- Tyler Greene and Shane Robinson on the other hand both are doing well, and tonight both went 1-for-4.
- Stephen Hill T-Bone went 0-2 and was intentionally walked. He played catcher.
- Tyler Norrick allowed a run over two innings, with two walks, a hit and a strikeout.
- Arnoldi Cruz, who is hitting .429, went 0-3. He did well defensively behind the plate, however. Throwing out two out of three basestealers, catching the speedy James Skelton and Brian Friday.
Caribes 4, Caracas 2 (Venezuela)
- For Caribes, David Freese went 1-4 with a double and a strike out. He also had a throwing error.
Licey 2, Escogigo 1 (10 innings)
- Amaury Cazana went 0-3 with a walk for Licey. He also hit a foul ball so hard, the ball broke the speed of light, went back in time, and killed Amelia Earhart while she was flying over the Pacific Ocean. Mystery solved.
More later as info becomes available…
Update: OK, I’ll just do this quick and dirty…Luke Gregerson allowed a hit and struck out two over a scoreless frame for Margarita of the Venezuelan league. He was credited with the W.
Jose Martinez went 0-3 for Aragua, playing against Gregerson’s team.

Correct me if I am wrong but Izzy being a type A free agent shouldn’t have any impact because we will not offer him arbitration and therefore the team who signs him would not lose a pick in the draft.
Well, the Cardinals could offer Izzy arbitration w/ an agreement that he not take it, but there’s no way that would happen as it would severely limit any teams who might be interested in him with an incentive-laden contract. So, him being a Type A is a non-factor.
I hate those ratings, though. They don’t make any sense. It would be nice if Izzy was a Type B (there is still a chance, since those lists aren’t official, and he’s very borderline on A/B). If he was a Type B, the Cardinals would have a much better shot at offering him arbitration w/ an agreement that he wouldn’t accept. They would get a comp. round pick, and any team signing him wouldn’t have to worry about sacrificing a draft pick.
You’re right, they would have to offer him arbi in order to get compensation. I don’t know why, but I forgot.
I think they will at least offer him Arbitration, he will most likely accept it and get a similar salary to what he got last year, maybe closer to 07.
No way they offer him arb. They don’t want him back at anywhere near the money he was making. Unfortunately, I see him back with a 2M base and incentives.
You can’t offer a guy arb with an agreement that he not accept, can you? i’d think that you’d get hit with a lawsuit from the players union before you finished your sentence.
If someone signs him before 1 Dec, we’ll get their draft pick, but that won’t happen.
I believe they did, indeed, do that with Mike Matheny a few years ago. It does seem unethical though. I do think that Backwater may be right and that they’ll make an incentive deal with hiim. This kind of thing and several other off season issues with the team are the problem with trying to rebuild without a manager who will really commit to it. Even if they sign Izzy to a cheap deal and even if he does well as closer it keeps them from doing what they have to do, turn the corner and see what Perez, Motte et al can do.
