I believe they did, indeed, do that with Mike Matheny a few years ago. It does seem unethical though. I do think that Backwater may be right and that they’ll make an incentive deal with hiim. This kind of thing and several other off season issues with the team are the problem with trying to rebuild without a manager who will really commit to it. Even if they sign Izzy to a cheap deal and even if he does well as closer it keeps them from doing what they have to do, turn the corner and see what Perez, Motte et al can do.

You can’t offer a guy arb with an agreement that he not accept, can you? i’d think that you’d get hit with a lawsuit from the players union before you finished your sentence.

If someone signs him before 1 Dec, we’ll get their draft pick, but that won’t happen.

No way they offer him arb. They don’t want him back at anywhere near the money he was making. Unfortunately, I see him back with a 2M base and incentives.

I think they will at least offer him Arbitration, he will most likely accept it and get a similar salary to what he got last year, maybe closer to 07.

You’re right, they would have to offer him arbi in order to get compensation. I don’t know why, but I forgot.

Well, the Cardinals could offer Izzy arbitration w/ an agreement that he not take it, but there’s no way that would happen as it would severely limit any teams who might be interested in him with an incentive-laden contract. So, him being a Type A is a non-factor.

I hate those ratings, though. They don’t make any sense. It would be nice if Izzy was a Type B (there is still a chance, since those lists aren’t official, and he’s very borderline on A/B). If he was a Type B, the Cardinals would have a much better shot at offering him arbitration w/ an agreement that he wouldn’t accept. They would get a comp. round pick, and any team signing him wouldn’t have to worry about sacrificing a draft pick.

Correct me if I am wrong but Izzy being a type A free agent shouldn’t have any impact because we will not offer him arbitration and therefore the team who signs him would not lose a pick in the draft.
