Bernie Miklasz debunks the notion of the Cardinals being serious players for Jake Peavy-

Why the Cardinals won’t make a serious run for Peavy is left to the imagination.

It could be Peavy’s contract, which isn’t prohibitive, unless Cardinals management believes they’ve already tied up too much long-term money in deals with Chris Carpenter and Kyle Lohse.

It could be the unwillingness to part with the load of prospects that the Padres reportedly are seeking in exchange for Peavy.

Seems like Cardinals are less willing to deal off Rasmus +______+ ______ then I initially thought they might be for a pitcher of Peavy’s caliber. But considering that Peavy is such an injury risk, and is also signed for big $ and long-term, this is a wise non-move for Mo. Unfortunately, the loony birds who don’t know how to say anything but “cheap, cheap” are probably going to come out in full force, especially if he gets traded to a division rival.

Huzzah! First Inning is back!

Arizona Fall League

  • Shane Robinson hit a two out RBI double for his only hit in five at bats. He struck out twice.
  • Adam Ottavino pitched like a first round pick today. He threw three innings of scoreless ball, allowing four hits, no walks and struck out six. 31/51 of his pitches were thrown for strikes. Box.

Hawaii Winter Baseball

  • Off day. Arnoldi Cruz is leading the league with a 1.112 OPS. James Rapoport is hitting .300/.397/.440.

Nice to see a good outing from Ottavino. Key stat: 0 walks

I heard Peter Gammons on the radio today talking about Peavy, and he said that, in the last two seasons, Peavy has recorded a total of 15 outs after the 7th inning. For an elite-level SP, that’s a pretty stunning number, to me anyway. He’s a guy that will pile up the K’s, but doesn’t go deep into games because of high pitch counts. He doesn’t fit the philosophy of TLR and Duncan. I also think it’s only a matter of time before he suffers a major injury (elbow or shoulder) because of his mechanics.

I think he will end up a Brave. With Smoltz done, they’re looking for a guy to pair with Hudson at the top of their rotation. Plus, Peavy is from Alabama, and we all know how the Braves like to get those Southerners on their roster.

All of these Peavy talks stink of another Haren/Mulder situation to me. I would love to have Peavy on our team, but I’m terrified of the day, 2 – 3 years from now when our hopes and dreams hinge on Peavy’s return from the DL, while Rasmus is tearing the cover off the ball elsewhere and we all sit around with our heads in our hands, dying a little inside. I know you can’t be scared of every trade, but in my mind, we did OK this year with what we had. There are a lot of “What Ifs” and “Maybes” but all signs indicate we’re going to do OK or better again next year. I see no reason to sell the farm for something like this when, if we just stay patient we should be a lot better off in the long run. I definitely wouldn’t complain to see Peavy on this team, in 2009, but it’s not the move I feel we should make, for all that’s worth.

I still think Ottavino is going to put it together. His problems stemmed from mechanics and then got in his head. He needs a few good outings in the AFL to end the year and put him on the right track for next year.

I think we need to hold on to Rasmus. I’m not opposed to trading for him but shouldn’t we keep him for insurance in case Ludwick was a fluke, Ankiel gets hurt again and Schumaker returns to a light hitting fourth/fifth outfielder that we expected out of him? Also with Peavy’s questionable mechanics you definetly have to be worried about another Mark Mulder situation

We already have a horrible contract that we may not get anything out of in Carpenter. I hope he comes back and can gives us some good years, but how bad would it be to possibly have 2 of those at 1 time. That would be 30-35 million riding the lazy-boy.
