Over at John Sickels’ site, there is a lively debate going on who would you rather have starting on your 2009 team- Colby Rasmus or Cameron Maybin? Colby hits far less ground balls, walks more, strikes out less and has a superior glove…so yeah, give me Colby.

Matthew Leach fields a question regarding Todd-

Although he was only in Double-A last year, what are the chances of Jess Todd making the roster next year?
– Brian B., Little Rock, Ark.

The chances of him cracking the Opening Day roster are slim, but not entirely impossible. He did make a few appearances at Triple-A Memphis, but he merely did well rather than spectacularly (as he fared at every previous level). The right side of the bullpen is already crowded, and it’s hard to envision Todd cracking the rotation out of Spring Training. By the end of the year, however, he might well make his way to St. Louis.

ZiPS projection for Todd: 4.75 ERA, Pineiro, 5.45. If Pineiro lays an egg that rotten, perhaps we could see Todd sooner than later.

Arizona Fall League

Brett Wallace went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Tyler Greene went 1-for-3 with a walk, a strikeout and was caught stealing 2B.
Tyler Norrick got lit up for three runs on four hits and and a walk in just one inning of work. He’s sporting a 9.35 ERA in the AFL.
Justin Fiske threw 1.1 innings with no runs, hits, walks with 1 HBP and 1 K. Box

Hawaii Winter Baseball

Tony Cruz went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter.
Blake King allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk over 0.2. He struck out one. Box.

Dominican Winter League

Amaury Marti went 1-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI. The World Series will resume play when Amaury Marti says so. Box.

Venezuelan Winter League

David Freese went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Box.

help me out with the train of thought that says todd’s future is in the bull pen. his four seem runs up to 94, his control is pretty good, he has three pitches, that he uses, and his velocity is consistent throughout his starts. what is it about his mechanics that many see relegating him to the pen?

i think the main reason why he gets that bill of future reliever is because him falling under the small frame stereotype that gets billed for pitchers not 6’4″. i can understand that to an extent and i’ve never seen todd in person, but by all accounts and the few clips i’ve seen of him is he looks pretty sturdy. i don’t see a reason to take him out of starting unless he starts looking mediocre. i would like to see boggs get a shout in the ’09 pen. his fastball and slider are good, seems fitted to a relief role better-at least in my opinion. thoughts?

its nice to see the walrus starting to heat up.

oswalt is listed at 6’0″ and he’s made an average of 30 starts a year being pretty dominant. so being small doesn’t pigeon hole you into the bullpen.

in fact, this guy does some research into the subject and comes up with some interesting finds. he used the 2007 data and he is missing his pictures but the gist is still there.

    This is rather shocking:

Ross: Are there any surprise players in the system that might make the big league squad in 2009?

John Mozeliak: Don’t rule out Tyler Greene, he is having a strong Arizona Fall League.
