Dustin Mattison has a nice interview with David Freese, the Birdhouse’s (and Baseball America’s…and MLB.com’s) player of the year.

DM: Three of the top position prospects in the Cardinals system are you, Allen Craig, and Brett Wallace. What are your thoughts on the logjam at the hot corner?

DF: It’s like déjà vu all over again. This is similar to the situation I had with San Diego regarding Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley. It’s obviously good for an organization to have multiple players at one position because it can create position changes to get more bats in a lineup or free up someone for a trade. I don’t know what’s going to happen. To play for the Cardinals would be unbelievable but the bottom line is that I want to play in the Majors, wherever that may be.

Minor League Baseball announced that Hammons Field is the AA Field of the Year. I haven’t been there yet myself, but from all accounts that I have heard it is a great atmosphere to enjoy a game.

Russ Springer and Braden Looper both filed for free agency, amongst others. Looper is a type B, Springer a type A. C’mon, compensation!

Arizona Fall League

  • Playing 3B, Tyler Greene went 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 RBI and two strikeouts.
  • Shane Robinson went 0-for-4.
  • Brad Furnish was charged with the blown save. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk to run up his ERA to 10.61 He picked up one strikeout. Box.

Hawaii Winter Baseball

  • No longer leading the league in average, Arnoldi Cruz went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He allowed two stolen bases as the catcher. Box.

My guess is Springer and Looper both get offered arb. Looper will decline but Springer will accept and he and the team will come to terms. In other words we can hope for a supplemental pick at best. What to do with Izzy? Would he accept arb? Guess it depends on whether he’s really a type A – he’s pretty close to a B on the unconfirmed list.

I’m pretty excited about what Freese can bring to the team…great defense ~25HR pop, decent AVG/OBP. I think he’s more of a sure thing than Craig right now, and we all know Wallace is a defensive ? (though he’s played well to date).

whehter Izzy is A or B wouldn’t make much difference whether he would accept arb. It might make a difference whether or not he was offered arb but I don’t see anyway that would happen.

That Box for VWL game, has Rico Washington hitting a HR not Freese, David is in a nasty slump this week going 4-for-24 with 10 K’s with a Grand Slam, Also those must be some trash fields he has 4 errors already.

I am starting to think they are correcting those box scores throughout the day, I thought for certain I thought I saw him down with a HR. :shrugs:
