Derrick Goold continues his reader top 30, and Daryl Jones once again needs our help. I like David Freese and all, but how he is a better prospect than Jones is baffling to me. I think he won his own district, if you catch my drift. Now he’s falling behind Motte and Jess Todd and looking to land at #8. Do I like Jones too much? I’m still fine tuning my personal rankings, he’s either my #4 or #5 prospect, either before or after Anderson.

I think DG had like seven blog posts today, making me feel…well…lazy. In this one he has updates on how the some prospects are doing in fall ball, including a progress report on Tony Cruz’s “pop time”. He was clocked at 1.87; major league average is 1.9. That’s pretty darn stout for someone without a lot of catching experience. With a good performance so far in fall ball, he has some helium.

Kevin Goldstein looks at the farm system of the team we love to hate, and comes away underwhelmed.

The Cubs are not a team based on youth; even Soto turns 26 in January. They are also not a team in need of a youth movement, and that’s a good thing, because this is a weak system in which finding any future Cub stars requires quite a bit of dreaming.

Per the wonders of facebook, I learned that Freese left VZ with a wrist injury, which would explain his struggles.

Arizona

Hawaii

  • Arnoldi Cruz went 1-for-5 with an RBI double. Playing catcher, he allowed a pair of stolen bases.
  • Tyler Herron allowed two unearned runs. He struck out the first batter he faced, walked the next batter and had a throwing error on a force attempt. He allowed an RBI double and a sac fly before getting the final out via the ground.

Puerto Rico

  • Kickin’ it in da PJ’s!  P.J. Walters allowed 0 runs on 5 hits over 5.1 innings and struck out 7. No walks. It’s good to see good control P.J. back on the hill.
  • Bryan Anderson drew a walk, was caught stealing and allowed a steal against Royals’ Mike Aviles.

What was Bryan doing trying to steal a base?

Tony Cruz’s development is really impressive. I have said it before that I think he had on of the most impressive seasons amoung the minor league players considering that he hit in Palm Beach and was learning the toughest D position on the diamond. If we end up moving Anderson (count me in the move Anderson camp), he is going to make it an easier hit to take.

    BJM,
you can get a “caught stealing” on a botched hit and run if I am not mistaken. There are other ways a player gets caught in a bad situation not of their making. I doubt it was a true steal, though with Jose managing it very well could be.

Agreed, vote for Daryl! That dude crushed the ball this year. He was the Card’s best minor league comeback story. Gives me faith that the Cards can actually polish people off. Motte’s cool, but come on, he’s a one pitch reliever right now.

    Hugo-

Perhaps you didn’t pick-up on the distinct tongue-in-cheek accent of my comment. It is just funny to see that in a box…

Nope I didn’t catch it, my internet sarcasm meter has been broken for awhile.

So will Arnoldi and Steve Hill be the catchers at Springfield to start the season? Not sure if Hill had enough AB’s in Double-A last year to really prove anything there.
