The NY Post is saying Khalil Greene has been traded to the Cardinals for two relief prospects. The SD Union-Trib confirms. Given this is a salary dump for the Padres and Greene is coming off his worst season as a big leaguer, I’m not expecting them to be trading our best relief prospects, read: Perez, Motte, Reifer. At least I hope not Reifer. I’m guessing it’s someone like Mark Worrell, Fernando Salas, Francisco Samuel or maybe Luis Perdomo, who was oddly unprotected from the Rule 5 draft.

Greene will be glad to get away from the Petco:

  • Home OPS- .658
  • Road-.802

At first blush I think this is a pretty decent move by Mo, I’d like to see who the players that were traded before I first before I judge. Two needs are now filled and there is still some money to play with, so that is good.

And hey, the last time the Pads traded us a shortstop, that worked out pretty well, right? Eh.

If Perez or Motte is involved i will be a very angry cards fan. I hope its two of the four you suggested.

It would be weird to see an all Green double play combo.

My mind is still not made up on Greene. I don’t get to see much of the Pads, but I think I’ve heard his D has slipped. I may be way off base though.

    Padres fan here ..

Greene is a good player, solid glove and has a solid work ethic. He really, really, needed out of San Diego.

    Great pickup.

    Career Road
    Matt Holliday: 1450 PA, 44 HR’s.
    Kahlil Greene: 1300 PA, 50 HR’s.

    awesome deal…

depending on who was sent out west. that still scares me, but we shall see.

to wade — his defense is considered top 5 in all of baseball. i hope by the time i wake up the ‘prospects’ going to san diego were not considered part of the 09 bullpen

Reifer’s a top three relief prospect. . .we have very different opinions of relievers in the system then.

  7. erik says:

@ AZ I think he is. 94-98 MPH fastball, 70 grade slider, has the definition of a closer’s mentality. He was ranked by BA as the best pitcher in the NYPL, by far. Luhnow said once he gets healthy, he could prove to be the real sleeper of the 07, and I think he has so far.

I hope he’s not getting my hopes up like I did w/ Maiques last year, but he should move very fast through the system next year.

  8. Hugo says:

Az do you consider Lynn and Mort and Todd to be relievers? If so I wouldn’t even think of Reifer up that high, otherwise he might be the third best right hander we have at the back end of the pen when I think relief his name comes up right after Motte and Perez and right before the others listed.

  9. PJ says:

Hopefully Mark Worrell is one of the 2. It appears he won’t get the chance here. I am betting Salas is the other. He was a minor league all star, but is probably only the 3rd best RHRP in our system (after Reifer and Samuel)

While I don’t know about Greene, dealing from an org’s strength to improve an org’s weakness is at least good business.

Crazy. Can’t wait to see who’s going to Southern Cal.

Speaking of crazy, I had a dream last night where I went to see Erik talk at a baseball conference and he turned out to be a 55 year old black guy. All this despite the fact that I’ve seen his photo on his old avatar.

    Weird.

Az – who would you say are our top three relievers in the system? Some people don’t see Jess Todd as starting in the big leagues – are you counting him as a reliever. Surely not Lynn or Mortensen – I think they profile as starters. Garcia could end up in the bullpen, but I think that’s a worst case scenario.

What I like about Reifer is that all reports seem to say he throws really hard…that’s a good start. I’ve seen guys improve their control (Randy Johnson), but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anyone learn how to throw hard.

  15. Apparently Mozeliak was on the Morning Grind in STL and he said that the reports of the deal were “not true”. I didn’t hear it, but I was told that from someone who did. They should have the audio up soon (if not already).

I’d much rather go for Escobar than Greene; Greene has too many questions and he will only bring us back to the same question next year: who will be our shortstop? If Greene doesn’t play well, we won’t offer him a contract. If he plays well, someone will throw more money at him. I don’t think Kozma will be ready and I don’t see Tyler Greene as an everyday player.

  16. azruavatar says:

Hugo/8 – No, No and Maybe. The main problem I have is a) I haven’t seen substantial video of Reifer, b) he spent the whole season in Batavia and c) he’s already pigeon holed as a reliever. I’m just not prepared to pass over people like Worrell, Gregerson, Salas or Samuel for a guy in short season that I’ve never seen whose numbers were very good but not otherworldly.

  17. azruavatar says:

Todd/14 – Perez and Motte are the top two. After that there’s a cluster of second tier guys (Salas, Samuel, Gregerson, Worrell, etc) who all have good (not great) numbers closer to the majors.

Maybe it’s just ignorance on my part — I haven’t seen Reifer in action — but it seems awfully early to label him the #3 relief prospect.

  18. Hugo says:

If you had to rank them though how would it shake out? One of them has to be third ;) in the end though I agree it is early to peg him in the same realm as Motte/Perez and above that of Salas, etc. We need more time watching and reading about them.

I like this trade a good deal. Everyone is complaining about not having any offensive production from the shortstop position. Now there is, with a lot of upside. Defensively, Greene is comparable to Izturis, averaging about 10 errors a season. His Petco figures are abysmal… but that park is a Grand Canyon, last in the league for hitters ! Look at Greene’s away stats…For his career, Greene is a .270 hitter AWAY compared to the Petco .225. Hitting at Busch should help Khalil somewhat. He projects to be, with the differences in ballparks according to my figuring, about 30-40 points better in batting average…In fact, this is what I came up with for a regular season with his favorable away stats and hitting in a more friendly hitting ballpark:

    597 ABs – 157 hits – 36 2B – 2 3B- 24HR- 85 RBI- .263 average.

With this being a “walk” year, and being motivated by that and proving the Padres wrong, he should top his career average of .248. He did hit .273 one year. I think that this young man will do well in St. Louis, and it is a good move. Bill James projects him for nearly 20 HR with still being in a San Diego uniform… what is not to like ?

  20. Tom says:

My money is on Pedermo (unprotected in the rule 5…also it would add justification to the reyes trade) or gregerson (were the padres impressed by his winter league perfomance?) as the 2nd guy in addition to worrell

  21. Aztecbill says:

    Khalil’s 2007 road numbers doubled:

    58 doubles
    30 home runs
    116 RBIs
    108 Runs

He had a bad 2008, no doubt. But his 2003-2007 road SLG is over .500 !! For a good fielding SS, that is great. I have a feeling that Greene will have a monster year for the Cards.
