I’m stuck at home thanks to some car troubles. I know this is coming out of right field, but is anyone up for a chat? If so,

Personally, I think Putz would be a very good fit, but idk about giving up Ankiel and Trevor Hoffman would be a perfect fit. Bring in Hoff on a one-year deal, have him mentor Perez, and if you deal Ankiel get a starter or a second baseman.

I would love to get Putz but Ankiel seems to interest a lot of teams.

this is what i don’t understand. why is the closer role such a big deal at this point? last year it seemed like we screwed everything up in the 7th and 8th (although I know we had our share in the 9th). I would much rather trade Ankiel to the Rays for starting pitching and use a portion of that 15 million to get Fuentes. Joel pitching every fifth day scares me more than Perez & Motte working the 9th.

  4. Matt says:

Sign me up for Corey Wimberly in the Rule 5 draft. He’s a versatile speedster who can play 2B, albeit he has defensive question marks.

  5. Wade says:

So this isn’t really a prospect player question as much as it is a prospect manager. LaRussa obviously likes Fuentes, but LaRussa only has one year left (correct?) Do we really want to pay (judging by KRod’s contract) about 10mil for 3 years for a closer who our next manager might not like? Count me in the group that likes the Motte/Perez choice and part of the 10mil going towards a 2B.

If we’re going to pony big $$$ for a closer then shell out the money for Kerry Wood who won’t cost a draft pick. The thought of signing Fuentes irritates me a lot.

Seriously, why not Trevor Hoffman? He’s a one-year commitment, has NEVER allowed more hits in a season than innings pitched and you have to go back to his rookie season in ’93 to get a WHIP over 1.20. Career 9.61 K/9 with a 46/9 K/BB ratio in 45.1 IP in ’08. His ERA regressed to 3.77 and he’s now 41, but if you look at his peripherals you see anything but a washed-up pitcher. As for Petco, Hoffman’s road ERA(2.87) was almost a run and a half better than his home ERA(4.25), in fact only in 2007 was his road ERA not significantly lower on the road. He’s the all-time saves leader, still strikes guys out and doesn’t allow many baserunners, and he’s a one-year commitment at half the salary Fuentes is asking for, and we keep the draft pick. Not to mention all the young guys who would benefit from his leadership. Perez’ weakness is his control, with that kind of mentorship it might improve a little, plus it’s a really big contrast from the 8th inning soft-tosser to the 9th inning fireballer. Heck, if P.J. Walters is ever going to amount to anything he’s going to have to use his skillset the same way Hoffman uses his.

Plus, he’s got the same last name as me. What’s not to like?

our team is basically complete minus a couple pitchersof some sort and a 2b. here r some ideas to finish us off.

trade for brian roberts and sherrill.

trade for dan uggla and a starter.

trade for mike gonzalez and johnson.

    trade bait

ankiel, rasmus, mather, motte, anderson, craig, freese, boggs.

in particular i like mike gonzalez. hes a lefty with closing experience yet could also setup. he is only signed for this year. ankiel could be a great transition for their cf job because they have schaeffer and hernandez in the minors. the braves wouldnt have a closer but they can just go sign one. being that they sucked last year they wouldnt lose a 1st rounder for fuentes and unlike the cards, they dont have a long term solution at closer so a 3 year signing would make sense for them. getting gonzalez would let perez transition for another year, give us a great lefty, and allow rasmus a chance to start.

  9. Matt says:

joel- If Soriano can recover from his nerve-transposition by spring training, he can close. I like the Gonzalez idea, I just think that Ankiel would have more value if he put up a healthy half-season and we could get more for him at the deadline. To me, it’s not like having Schumaker as a 4th OF is a bad thing…
