Alright. We’ve have officially ranked out 2009 prospects. For that matter, so has John Sickels, Kevin Goldstein and Baseball America. It is now you, the Future Redbirds reader’s turn. I figured the first two were no-brainers. Now comes theĀ  tricky part – who’s next? This is a deep class of prospects this year, and you can make a lot of arguments after the top two. The majority rules this time, as we open up the voting now.

Seems like Perez will take the third slot in a landslide…but isn’t Motte the better prospect?

Motte has thrown 50% more minor league innings, and has (1)the same ERA, (2)the same K rate, (3)half the walk rate, and (4)a substantially superior MLB debut–albeit over a small sample size, of course.

I like Perez a lot, mind you…but Little Dibble looks great to me.

For reference (and irony), erik and I cross posted this story and the confirmation bias one.

Quite ironic! Esp. since I referred everyone to the other lists that have come out. We’ll run through it to test out how strong the confirmation bias can be, I guess. Hah.

yes it looks like perez will win. as for motte being better, i think its possible but would still rank perez higher. i like motte a lot but he just came in last year and threw his fastball. does he throw anything else? if he does i sure dont remember. perez is ranked higher because he was awesome in college(wasnt motte catching) and perez has more than one pitch. they both need more work on their secondary stuff but i dont think motte can throw anything but a fastball for a strike. of course that was also perez’ biggest problem last year. if motte comes to spring training with another pitch(any pitch) and can consistently throw it for strikes than i say motte would be better. we all know who has the better fastball.

I’d actually say that both fastballs rate pretty even – 65 or 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale. Motte throws a couple mph faster than Perez, but it is as straight as an arrow. Perez’s fastball has late tailing action, so the movement it generates compensates for the slightly slower speed. Perez basically sits 94-96, and can touch 97-98. Motte sits 96-98, and can touch 99-100. Which pitch is better? I’d say it’s pretty close.

u make a good point about the movement but i cant help remember the jason michaels interview after perez blew a game this year. when asked how he hit the homerun he said “well i knew he threw fast.” my point is michaels knew it was coming and crushed it. i dont think guys can crush that motte fastball even if they know its coming. maybe guys will time mottes pitches but in a short role i dont know. long story short they both need another pitch.

I’ve got to go with Chris Perez. If Jaime Garcia was healthy I may have considered him. My hope is that Perez, Motte and Kinney will “lock-down” the late innings for the Cardinals this year!

i agree with Joel if jason shows up with anything other than the fastball that he can throw for strikes to camp this year i would put him ahead of perez as well but right now perez at least has another pitch he can throw be it not as well as he throws the heater. As far as the fastball comparison id say they are pretty even with the way Swirls Aepi broke it down above Mottes xtra couple MPh’s make up for the lack of movement
