That was the tightest race imaginable, with Todd squeaking by Freese by only three votes. In case you were wondering, to settle a definite winner I put a time limit as to when the poll would close, which was 12:01. I halfway expect someone circumventing the system and voting multiple times in order to screw with my head, but only a complete loser would do something so lame and pointless.
Actually, I can see why both were so close. Both players burst on the scene to post two equally terrific seasons. Todd was BA’s Cardinal pitcher of year, Freese was their Cardinal hitter of the year. Both are close to the majors and both seem to be fan favorites, Freese for his St. Louis roots and Todd because “He Will Destroy Us All” fame. Both are solid prospects that project be contributors at the big league level, but are somewhat limited in ultimate upside.

After Freese and Todd I think is when the field really opens up. Any one of about five of the guys you listed could have great arguments for the spot.
PS I am not a complete loser, I am a well educated moron.
I like to think of myself as a marginal winner.
Wow…After seeing the Jay and Kozma defensive ratings they kinda pop up the list for me.
no need to be nagative. “only a complete loser would do that”. hey man i wouldnt but lets not assume the worst. if u want to hold commenters to a standard u should hold yourself to the same one. it just didnt sound right.
ps, im not the only one who thought this.
People were some how offended in some way by that? I wasn’t at all. Anyone who would sit there and purposely screw with a poll is a loser.
I agree with BJM in that I look at Kozma and Jay a bit differently now.
I’d really like to vote for Mortensen in this spot. He’s a player that I think would get a lot more attention if he hadn’t been moved so aggressively through the system so far.
The player I actually voted for here is Jay. He’s a personal favorite of mine and I really like the way he plays. Unfortunately I’m a little afraid that he profiles as only a CF because of his lack of power and there is another guy in front of him that I’m guessing will get every chance to claim that position for the next several years — I can’t seem to remember his name right now. Anyways, I kind of envision Jay with Mark Kotsay type numbers in the bigs but even though I think he is above average defensively from what I’ve seen, but I had the same reaction to the numbers posted earlier today “he’s not really that good, is he?” I don’t have a perfect understanding of Total Zone rating (or UZR for that matter), but I think there are a number of assumptions that are made in the rating and the numbers – as in just about any case – can be skewed by the sample size. But from what I have seen with my own eyes Jay is a very good defensive outfielder so I want to believe the rating.
You know, I really wish I had had the foresight to patent Jess Todd Will Destroy Us All. Think of the merchandising…
I almost went with Jay but ultimately decided to go with Mortensen. I’d love to see Jay’s defense on the MLB level, and his bat intrigues me. I just think Mortensen has more upside at this point, but he has definitely got to improve this year at AAA.
One thing I’m most looking forward to this year is Roberto De La Cruz’s year and how far he soars up prospect lists, if much at all his first year.
I’ve been voting Jay since #5. He’s probably in the “most likely to succeed categories” if maybe not in the “most likely to excel.” I think opinions are that he will find a place in the big leagues which can’t be said for everyone 5-9.
With Rasmus, Jones, and maybe Wallace all slated for the outfield – where does Jay fit in?
Looks like a continued crowded outfield situation for the Cardinals for years to come. Guess it’s not a bad problem to have, but it will be interesting to see where all of these guys wind up in about three seasons, whether with the Cards or another organization.
How could you scew with the poll? I thought you could only vote once right?
I’m wondering if someone found a way to circumvent that. It’s just a cookie after you vote, you could delete your cookies maybe and vote again? Either way, I don’t think someone actually did that. It was just unbelievable how close it was for so long. Maybe it was like me asking coke or pepsi?
