It would be alright if the Cardinals really sucked in 2010
Posted by erik in Jem Argenal, tags: Bryce Harper…because then they could draft Bryce Harper in 2011. You can read all about his recent exploits here. 500+ feet from a 15 year old is pretty stinking amazing, even if it’s only BP with a metal bat.
Also at the 2009 High School Power Show Case was left-handed 1B/RF Jem Argenal, whom the Cardinals signed out of Nicaragua back in November when Argenal turned 17. He hit 0 homers with the wood bat, but popped four with an aluminum bat in the Trop, one going 454 feet. I can’t say I know much about him outside of that, but he is a name to keep an eye on in the DSL next season.

What would really suck, would be for the Cardinals to be terrible for the first five months of the season, then in the last week of September have a 4 game winning streak and lose the first pick to those lovable losers in Seattle or Washington.
I don’t know how the rest of the 2011 draft class is, but this kid seems like a once in a generation type of talent. Of course we find a way to say that every couple of drafts, but maybe this kid is the real deal.
By the way I wouldn’t want that caliber of bat behind the plate. If he is a good enough athlete see if he can play third or even right or center field.
I know you don’t really mean that. Be careful what you ask for.
If the Cardinals are really sucking by 2011, then the whole FO regime should be thrown out on its ears.
You can hope Harper gets someone like Boras for an agent, drops like a rock in the draft because of signability, and the Cardinals reverse course on drafting and signing these kinds of guys to those kinds of contracts. Only 2 out of 3 of these things have any real likelihood of happening.
i definitely enjoyed the video. watching a ball go that far is fun. as for the cards sucking then i dont think so. we project to have a good team in 2010 with dead money coming off and rasmus and wallace coming up. this year might suck but 2010 should be good.
im sure this has been said before but why dont young baseball players use the wood bat? i know the ball goes far but this guy for example is almost about to be drafted. it seems like he should have experience using the real tool of the trade. i can tell u from experience swinging the two bats is very different. what other sport do u switch gear when u get to the majors? when u think about it it doesnt make any sense to ever use a metal bat(well except maybe to make cool highlight videos).
one reason is cost. pro ball players can sign with a company to use their bat. HS and College players can’t afford to buy a new bat when one breaks. I could see a college signing with a company to provide bats (much like uniforms), but not HS.
most of these guys (college) do compete in wooden bat leagues and i believe the first five or so outs of this homerun competition were with wood bats
i’m sure they won’t suck, actually. just kidding around. i wouldn’t want them to be bad, even if it is for a once and a generation player….at least i don’t think so.
good point about bats breaking. i bet thats why.
yeah i know they wont suck. just a good way to show this guy and his highlight video. i have no interest in high draft picks in baseball. football u have to pay them too much. now the blues they could lose every game this year.man if we had gotten ovechkin, crosby, or malkin. off topic somewhat but i currently root against the blues.
