3/18/09 Daily Farm Report – Spring Training Edition
Posted by erik in Daily Farm ReportsI admit it. For someone semi-retired, I’ve been around a lot. Actually, I have had some spare time, although it’s not really been the good sort of spare time. I’ll spare you the details, but things are going to change soon and I won’t be around quite as much. The good news that I’ve got a sneak peak at the cast of writers AZ is bringing on, and it’s a stellar group. I feel like John the Baptist. “I must decrease, they must increase”. OK, never mind with my weird delusions of grandeur. Anyway, here are some of the highlights of today’s inter-squad action, which started today.
Memphis/Springfield 4, Palm Beach 3
Let’s start with the Memphis/Springfield players first.
- Blake Hawksworth is someone who I pretty much gave up on, but I had an inkling I was doing so too soon. He had a pretty strong showing at big league camp and in spring training games, and he threw OK today. 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K’s.
- Royce Ring threw a perfect inning of relief, 1 K. I’m not so sure he got his fair shake, but I do feel a lot more comfortable with Dennys Reyes.
- Brad Furnish threw 2 hitless innings, with 1 K and 1 BB.
- Ian Ostlund, one of the other LOOGY rejects, threw 2 scoreless innings, with 1 H and 1 K.
- Taken in the AAA portion of the Rule 5, Russ Haltiwanger threw a perfect inning of work.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir went 2-2 with 2 RBI. Remember when Jarrett Hoffpauir excited us? Yeah, those days are gone.
- Brett Wallace went 2-for-5 w/an RBI. Very much looking forward to seeing what the Walrus brings us this season.
- Antone DeJesus went 2-for-5 with a triple. I don’t think the ceiling is real high with this guy, I do believe he has big league upside…well, at least he has some interesting stats that make me think so. Great glove, good OBP.
- Brandon Buckman doubled.
- Amaury Cazana went 1-for-3 with an RBI. [insert fact here]
- Freese, Anderson and Henley all had singles.
On to PB players…
- P.J. Walters allowed a run on four hits over four innings. He fanned 3. I wouldn’t make too much of him pitching for Palm Beach.
- Lance Lynn threw two scoreless innings. He gave up 1 hit and struck out two. I think Cardinal fans will grow to like this draft pick.
- Nick Additon and his soft-tossing lefty ways allowed a run on 5 hits with one K in his one inning of work.
- Back from the WBC repping the Cinderella story Netherlands, Curt Smith homered.
- Pete Kozma singled in his only AB.
- Oliver Marmol and Charlie Kingrey both doubled.
QC One 10, QC Two 0
- QC One combined for a 2-hit shutout. Hector Cardenas, George Brown and Ramon Delgado each threw two hitless innings, while Adam Veres allowed two hits in his two scoreless innings.
- Deuces wild for Niko Vasquez. 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. I’m looking forward to a new summer of The Adventures of Niko.
- Alex Castellanos was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. I really like this guy as a sleeper. I’m not sure how high is ceiling is yet, but the early returns have been excellent. Love the power/speed combo.
- Ryde Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBIs. I think one day we’ll be writing Ryde Rodriguez facts.
- Beau Riportella and Osvaldo Morales each doubled.
- On to QC Two players…Eric Fornataro allowed a couple of runs over 2 IP. Anthony Ferrara threw 2 innings, allowed 2 ER but fanned 4 K. He’s another favorite sleeper of mine. Yunior Castillo 1-for-2 with a walk.

Are the Cardinals going to handle Farerra the same way they have Hooker? Two years of short season ball with a cup of coffee at quad cities after the end of the second year?
DFR SIGHTING!
Its also worth noting that Niko went 2 for 2 with 2 walks for QC
I am not sure that comparing yourself to John the Baptist is really a delusion of grandeur. He did live on honey and bugs.
mmm….honey and bugs
addition gave up five hits in one inning and only allowed one run…must have been all singles and a well timed double play in there

Along with Brian Walton and Derrick Goold, John Vuch also emails me the highlights and scores. The commentary of course is my own.
I just saw a popup to the second baseman and I blinked. Joe Mather? At second base? Surely no one else is that tall…
Then I realized it was Brendan Ryan standing next to Shane Robinson, the right fielder.
God he’s small…
