Goldstein ranks Cardinal organization 9th overall
Posted on March 18th, 2009 by erik in Organizational RankingsWhy They Might Be Better Than This: Despite an overall disappointing season, scouts still love Colby Rasmus; 2008 first-round pick Brett Wallace mashed at Double-A just weeks after signing and looks like a future mid-order lineup force who doesn’t need much more time in the minors; Daryl Jones is just beginning to tap into his athleticism.
Why They Might Be Worse: Rasmus looks as if he’s pressing once again this spring; Wallace isn’t really a third baseman in the end; they have some solid pitching prospects, but none of them look like stud big-league starters.

Can’t disagree with those comments from Goldstein. Hopefully we draft a lot of pitchers this June.
I hope they do, but not with their first round pick, as 1st rd. hitters bust much less often than 1st rd. pitchers do. I hope they draft the best hitter available 1st, then load up on pitching. I really think finding top flight pitching prospects is more difficult than people realize, and having 2 or three top 100 pitching prospects in your system is no guarantee of anything.
Mitch Boggs has shown flashes of being a big league starter.
I really think we will see a guy like Lance Lynn or the oft-injured David Kopp take off this year and show why they were high picks.
Call me crazy, but I think Lance Lynn will be a name we (STL Fans) will all be talking about this time next year.
@PJ: Boggs may end up being a big leaguer but I highly doubt he will be a ‘stud’ starter. That was the point. There don’t seem to be any Wainwrights in the farm system right now. Though I for one didn’t think Wainwright would end up as good as he did, and it did take him a few years from when we got him from Atl, so I could be wrong.
that’s a good point about the bust rate of pitchers, erik. perhaps pitchers should be taken after the first round when no clear cut “best” hitter is left of the board. in late rounds, just gobble them up, throw them at the wall, and see what sticks. also, i like the recent signings of foreigns players. that can really help out our depth.
ehh…i still hope the cards take a high school pitcher early…just make sure the mechanics are solid…if there is one with good mechanics sitting there at 18 and seems signable, i say take him…have to taken chances every now and then
If Jacob Turner were to fall to number 19, would any of you raise objections to the Cardinals drafting him?
Of course that is still a remote possibility even if he does fall to the Cardinals. Given their track record over the last ten years in the first round.
