A big thanks to John Vuch, the Cardinals’ Director of Minor League Operations, for the information about the minor leaguers in spring training. It was an up and down day for the minor leaguers as we have 5 games to recap.
Memphis 4, New Orleans 10
- Justin Fiske threw 2 IP allowing 2 hits and 1 ER. Fiske is the most advanced lefthander in the system outside of Jaime Garcia. He was converted from relief to starting pitching last year and struggled. Keep an eye on the role he’s put in and how he performs. The Cardinals desperately need left handed pitching to develop in the minors.
- Hyang-Nam Choi allowed 2 ER in 3IP.
- Charlie Manning struggles continue after failing to capitalize on his opportunity with the big league club. He allowed 3 ER in 1 IP in 4 hits.
- Matthew Scherer, a 40-man roster addition this year, allowed 2 ER on 2 hits while striking out 2 in an inning of work.
- Marco Gonzalez allowed an earned run on 2 hits in his inning of work.
- Shaun Garceau took the loss recording 5 outs and allowing 1 ER.
- Mark Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Hamilton may be on the Mike Ferris path as players like Wallace and Craig traverse the system with questions about their long-term position.
- Brandon Yarborough went 2-for-3 with a double.
- Jarret Hoffpauir had a 2 run double.
- Nick Stavinoha, catching the game, was 1-for-4. I wouldn’t read much into this with regard to Bryan Anderson but I think the attempted position switch speaks pretty loudly about the club’s opinion of Stavinoha as an outfielder.
Springfield 1, Jacksonville 7
- Ryan Bird started the game and wound up with the loss. 2IP, 3 ER
- Ryan Kulik threw two scoreless frames allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and 2 Ks.
- Elvis Hernandez struck out 3 while getting hit for 2 ER over 2 IP.
- Davis Bilardello and Kenny Maiques both allowed an earned run in an inning of work. I’ll be keeping an eye on Maiques to see how his year goes. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to see him in person; after seeing him 2 years ago in QC and his less than stellar 2007 (edit: 2007 was great, 2008 was the sucky year) campaign, I’m wondering where he’s headed next.
- Sam Freeman, another lefty, struck out 2 in a perfect inning of work.
- Steve Hill was 2-for-3 with a HR.
- Andrew Brown, Tyler Henley and Donovan Solano each had a hit. Brown’s was a double.
Palm Beach 3, Jupiter 2
- Brian Broderick and Jonathan Stambaugh both tossed 2 innings allowing 1 run apiece.
- Pete Parise was perfect for 2 innings striking out 1.
- Wayne Daman and Matt Spade each thew a scoreless frame.
- Casey Mulligan, aka Jason Motte 2.0, picked up the save with a 1-K perfect frame.
- Francisco Riveria and Jonathan Edwards was 2-for-4.
- 1-for-2: Aaron Luna
- 1-for-3: Adron Chambers, Brian Cartie and Jermain Curtis
- 1-for-4: Oliver Marmol, Curt Smith and Charlie Kingrey
Quad Cities “Team 1″ 1, Greensboro 10
- Deryk Hooker got smacked around for 6 runs (5 earned) in 1+ innings of work. There’s a lot of hype around Hooker as he’s put up some gaudy K totals. He’ll be 20 this year.
- Jameson Maj threw 2 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 ER.
- Zach Pitts struck out 2, walked 1 and allowed 1 hit in 2IP.
- Gary Daley K’d 1 in an inning of work.
- Jason Buursma allowed 3 unearned runs on 2 hits in 2 innings.
- Jose Rada struck out the side in his inning of work.
- Tough day for QC hitters with Domnit Bolivar having the only muti-hit outing. He went 2-for-3.
- Osvaldo Morales, Frederick Parejo and Chris Swauger recording the only other hits: all singles.
Quad Cities “Team 2″ 9, Marlins minor league team 6
- Brett Zawacki was someone that looked like he could move fast after the draft with his sinking fastball seemingly tailor-made for the Cardinals. He struck out 2 allowing 1 ER in 2 IP.
- Michael Blazek allowed 3 hits in 2 IP and 1 unearned run.
- Reynier Gonzalez allowed 1 ER in an inning of work.
- Joshua Hester tossed 2 perfect innings striking out 2.
- Robert de la Cruz was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Jairo Martinez was 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Michael Swinson and Edwin Gomez went 2-for-4.
- Yunier Castillo was 1-for-2.
- Nick Vera was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.

A Gary Daley sighting…oh my!
I am trying to figure out how crappy outfielder = acceptable catcher.
Positional adjustment
Crappy hitting outfielder = good hitting catcher
Average fielding outfielder = probably a disaster behind the plate
azruavatar, where are the nicknames/off-the-cuff funny remarks that I’ve come to know and love in the DFRs?
That’s it. I’m shutting the site down.
/idle threat
I tried to add some commentary but I’m not sure what nicknames I’ve used in the past. Mountain Dew didn’t pitch and I didn’t think I was much of a nicknamer anyway. . . I’ll get back into the swing of things. Give it time.
Hey, it’s spring training for the announcers
(sorry, couldn’t resist).
I’m happy to see the DFRs…all is right with the world.
Steve Hill looks like AL trade bait. He has no real position but he sure looks like he would make a heck of a DH.
Still think Hooker will have an exceptional year.
you guys see where gorsett retired…wasn’t really a prospect, but still feel bad for the guy…you know that decision had to be tough
completely agree about steve hill…i really wish he could be an even slightly below average defensive catcher though
Sam Freeman will be in the big leagues at some point in 2010
