Hi Everyone, I’m Jeff and I’m new in town. I’ll throw out a little about myself before the DFR, but not too much because I don’t want you to get bored. I grew up in St. Louis and I’ve been a Cardinals fan all my life. Additionally, I also cover the Rams over at Rams Gab. I’m currently living in Boston and following the Cardinals and their affiliates via mlb.tv and the magic of the internet. I moved to Boston in the summer of 2004 and you all know what happened next as I basically had to barricade myself in my apartment during the 2004 World Series. It was not a good time for Boston-based Cardinal fans. That being said, it warms my heart every time I see someone wearing a Cardinals hat in Boston, so keep it up guys and girls.
It’s an honor and a privilege to be posting here at FR. I’m going to do my best not to embarrass myself. So, go easy on me. It’s spring training for me too.
John Vuch’s spring training report is after the jump.
Memphis 4, New Orleans 9
- Brandon Dickson started and went 3 innings giving up 1 hit and 0 runs with 3 Ks and 0 walks. Nice job Brandon.
- Hyang-Nam Choi took the loss giving up 5 runs on 5 hits over 2 innings.
- Katsuiko Maekawa was not helped out by his defense as he gave up 4 unearned runs. But, he did not help out himself either by giving up 5 hits and 1 walk over 1.2 innings.
- Ian Osltund cleaned up the game with 2.1 perfect innings and 1 K.
- The two offensive heroes for the Redbirds were Mark Shorey and Jarrett Hoffpauir who both went 2-4 with 1 RBI each. Shorey one upped Hoffpauir as his two hits were doubles.
- Mike Folli doubled and walked and Bryan Anderson and Casey Rowlett singled.
Springfield 2, Jacksonville 7
- Shaun Garceau started and took the loss with 6 hits with 1 walk and 4 earned runs over 3 innings.
- Tyler Herron followed with 2 perfect innings and 3 punch outs.
- Russ Haltiwanger had a little trouble in 1 inning of work as he allowed three runs on two hits and two walks.
- Francisco Samuel pitched a perfect inning.
- As did Pete Parise.
- Donovan Solano was the highlight of the game for Springfield as he went 2-3 with 1 RBI.
- As for the rest of the hitters, James Rapoport and Tyler Henley had doubles and Brett Wallace, Tony Cruz, Andrew Brown and Brandon Buckman singled.
Palm Beach 12, Jupiter 15
- Ryan Bird – 2 ER, 2 H, 2 IP.
- Jared Bradford wasn’t quite as symmetrical with 1 ER, 3 H, 2 IP.
- Thomas Eager has the worst day of all the pitchers with a pear-shaped line of 6 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 IP, and 1 “ugh” by your author.
- Wayne Damon – 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K’s
- Adam Reifer was better with 2 IP, 1 ER, and his two hits were seeing eye doubles that “kicked up chalk”. Unlucky Adam.
- The hitters, obviously were better as Curt Smith fears no one after the upset of the Dominican Republic in the WBC as he went 2-3 with a double, HR, 3 RBIs and a walk.
- Colt Sedbrook also went 2-3 with a HR.
- Adron Chambers was 2-3 (I sense a pattern here) with a triple, SB and 5 RBIs.
- Oliver Marmol was 2-4 (to break the pattern) with a run and an RBI.
- Tommy Pham and Jon Edwards doubled.
- Bryan Cartie got on based three times via a single and two walks.
QC #1 6, Greensboro 9
- Scott McGregor 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K’s
- Jameson Maj, 2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K’s
- Dylan Gonzalez, 2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K’s
- Jose Mateo, 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
- David Carpenter was the only pitcher to keep Greensboro off the board with one shutout inning – allowing 1 H and striking out 1.
- Rickey Noland lead the hitters by going 3-3.
- Chris Swauger and Brian Buck both got on base three times. Swauger had an RBI triple and Buck scored 3 runs.
- Domnit Bolivar had a single and a walk. He also had an outstanding diving backhand play at third.
- Brett Lilley and Beau Riportella both singled and walked as well.
- Jose Garcia had a triple and a run.
QC #2 5, Marlins 5th 3
- The QC #2 gets the only win for the minor leagues on Monday. Marlins 5th was probably embarrassed they did not have a team mascot.
- Josh Hester got the start and went 2 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 walk with 2 Ks to balance that out.
- Santo Maertz followed with 2 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned with 1 walk and 4 Ks. I like the K/BB ratio.
- LaCurtis Mayes followed Santo with 1.2 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 4 walks and 2 Ks. I do not like that K/BB ratio.
- Joel Pichardo was the only minor leagues winning pitcher with 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 walk and 3 Ks.
- Jose Rada shut the door with a two K’s in the scoreless 9th.
- Paul Cruz was 3-3 with two doubles and a walk.
- Roberto DeLaCruz (the Cards July 1st big signing) had a HR and 2 RBIs.
- Edwin Gomez and Luis Polanco doubled and Yunier Castillo , Edgar Lara and Jairo Martinez singled.
- Michael Swinson also singled but I have “singled” him out (get it?) as he showed extensive place patience with three walks.
Thanks to everyone who made it this far for bearing with me on my first effort at a DFR and as always, thanks to Mr. Vuch for the reports and insight into the minor leagues during Spring Training.

Welcome! Thanks for taking up the mantle.
For about 2 years I’ve been on the Solano bandwagon (rather lonely there). I really think he’s due for a breakout campaign. For a guy who has been so steady from such a young age he seems persistently overlooked. I don’t think he’ll ever be a star or anything but a poor man’s Polanco seems very plausible.
Sorry for being naive, but does John Vuch report the boxscores for all affiliates, or does he do something else?
Vuch is the Director of Minor League Ops.
During the season we have MiLB and other sites to get stats from, but during the spring it is harder to get information. I think that is why Vuch does his reports during the spring, it helps fill the media and blogs in on what is happening so the fans get to know.
And I forgot to add, Welcome Jeff its always good to have new faces around.
De La Cruz!!!!
I’ve updated the post to add the links.
Thanks everyone!
I knew the post was missing something, but I couldn’t figure out what.
Sorry for the post spam this morning but I just saw this nugget on BA’s prospect blog:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=2846
“Cardinals 17-year-old third baseman Roberto De La Cruz homered, an impressive blast directly into the wind. De La Cruz still shows his youth against breaking balls, but he’s done some damage against the fastballs he’s seen the last two days.
Cardinals righthander Adam Reifer came on in the last inning, throwing 92-94 mph with a 77-80 mph breaking ball, ending the game by getting Stanton to ground out to shortstop on a 2-2 fastball.”
that’s some tasty spam!
Are we allowed to call De La Cruz a man-child, yet?
Welcome Jeff!
welcome, jeff! the delacruz news is great, as is hearing of lots of success from pitchers (ostlund, herron, samuel, reifer, etc.) who we’re counting on. some new names here for me — I will have to keep an eye on them.
Where is De La Cruz likely to play? What depth at 3B we seem to be developing.
3B for now. I think he’s probably not the middle infield type, and outside of 2b/ss, 3b is the next most valuable position.
think about it – craig is moving to 1b/lf, freese will probably stay at 3b but he’s a C+/B- prospect so odds of him having a long career are not good. Wallace won’t stay at 3b for more than 4 seasons tops. So having another 3B prospect would be good.
“De La Cruz still shows his youth against breaking balls…” We need to have him spend some time with Amary Marti so he can learn to scare those curveballs straight.
Welcome Jeff. Thanks for taking up the slack.
Good to see Tyler Herron get off on the right foot.
Welcome Jeff. We have some stuff in common. Although I’ve never lived near St. Louis (grew up in upstate New York, college in Pennsylvania), I’m also a Cardinal fan in exile. Have lived in Minnesota since 1970 and suffered the contempt of Twins fans during and after the ’87 series. Some never forgave me for sticking with my team. Bad winners! Anyway Boston is really a wonderful city and Fenway is a great park. Hope you’ve taken down the barricades and are enjoying it.
Thanks for the report.
