If Jason Motte can show the ability to close, its probably best to trade Perez why he still has value before he gets into the TLR/Dunc blender and end up with no value like Anthony Reyes.
If a guy doesnt fit what you want to do and you dont think you can change your thinking to fit his…trade him.

Even TLR would have problems figuring out what to do with five one-plus-inning relievers (none of them with the Proven Closer tag) and a couple of LOOGYs.
I’d love to see Perez traded because I’m not a fan, and I hold out hope some other GM might buy into the radar gun readings before Perez’s shoulder blows out.
same here doug..gonna have to get rid of perez, who knows how long he’ll be stuck in memphis…i just don’t understand the love the cardinals brass has for brad thompson..i’m tired of this long relief excuse..can’t k-mac do that too?
Perez looked great yesterday, I have no problem sending him down if your not going to use him in the 9th or if you think you need protection in long relief for the first part of the year.
I just get wore out by the unnecessary excuses like he needs more experience, I dont care if a guy has 1000 minor league innings or 10…your ready when your ready.
Plus we have seen Perez in 2 MLB camps and pitch in the MLB’s in pressure packed situations.
I dont mind the things they do, the explanations bother me….just be honest..we can take it.
Tony LaRussa is a hall of fame manager, and led this team on one of the best runs in franchise history, but its time for him to hang it up after this year.
It is just too confusing to hear that somebody would rather have a 37 year old who has to be perfect with every pitch due to diminishing stuff, than a 23 year old that can throw the ball through a brick wall.
I have a feeling that if Colby is hitting .220 over the first month, that Tony is going to pressure the front office to put him on the Reyes train to Memphis as well. This compulsive fetish for “experience” is becoming ridiculous non-sequitar that the front office uses as a crutch to keep themselves from angering the skipper.
i understand their whole long reliever argument, but the thing that really gets me here is that perez is probably the 2nd best short reliever we have. so he didn’t win the closer job, he is still the best 8th inning option we have. i just don’t understand the reasoning behind “you are either the closer or you are going to AAA b/c we already have our 7th and 8th inning guys.” if he is better than those guys, which you clearly thought b/c you gave him the opportunity to win the closer’s job that you didn’t give those other guys, then he comes out and has a very good spring, why is he not on the team?
I think most of us expect Perez to be back up soon, but I agree with Few is it more important to have pitchers fit a role or have the best pitchers possible?
I guess we should all trust Duncan on this, but the underlying back and forth this regime seems to have with young pitchers who dont do things exactly the way they want them to do…well is a bit unnerving.
I am a fan of TLR and Dunc…I hope they stay awhile, but sometimes it seems the draft and development people arent on the same page as the MLB team..it almost seems like they are developed a certain way and when they reach the MLB’s…its not what the MLB staff wants.
Confusing…but hey, at least we arent Cubs fans:)
I agree with fewgoodcards. This “long reliever” role is ridiculous. Franklin and Mclellan have both started before so this role should basically be shared between them. If the bullpen has a long night then you can call up someone from Memphis for emergency duty. But over the course of the season you’re better off having your best 5 relievers in the pen. Otherwise we’re going to have the same problem we had last year, except it will be in the 7th and 8th, not the 9th. Franklin’s an average pitcher and Mcllelan hasn’t been good since the first half of last year. So you’re now left with Kinney and Motte and those 2 can’t pitch every night. It’s infuriating that we not only have disappointing offseasons, we can’t even put our best team on the field, and it’s been this way for years. But as long as Larussa is around, being a veteran and one of his “guys” will trump talent and ability. He may be a great in game manager but his roster handling is hurting us in the short and long term. I also like how spring training performances only count if he wants them to. “kyle mclellan’s been crappy all spring, but since he switched to the opposite side of the rubber he’s been less crappy so we’re going to go with him.” I’m ready for him to go. He’d rather lose with mediocre players he’s familiar with then give someone with talent a chance. There’s no reason to invest in the minor league system as long as he’s making the final decisions.

(I like Brad T, and I could rationalize keeping him over McClellan given Kyle’s awful Spring. But c’mon now, Thompson was a sub-mediocre MLB pitcher last year; keeping him over Chris Perez, who has *already* shown the ability to succeed in The Bigs over a substantial sample size is just goofy. Oh, and Perez has been dominant over his last couple of appearances.)

I wish Perez was in St. Louis, but you can’t say they always yo-yo guys or they don’t give young guys a chance. McClellan is the example, he got the unexpected chance, performance dropped but is still getting the benefit of the doubt. He’s the guy I would leave in AAA but he’s the guy they’re sticking with despite his struggles and lack of experience.
It seens to me that you really need a long reliver to help out mostly on the front end but two not just one young guns for the 8th and 9th seems like a shut the door
I’m sure LaRussa and Duncan have no clue (and don’t care) what their minor league history was, but in 2007, K-Mac, Motte, and Perez were money as the 7th, 8th, and 9th inning pitchers at Springfield. They knew their roles and excelled in them.
Why not make Franklin the long man (as someone mentioned previously), Kinney gets the Springer innings, and re-install McClellan, Motte, and Perez where they performed at a high level in the past?
Is the long reliever role ridiculous when your team is facing 30 plus games without a day off at the beginning of the season and a starting rotation that isn’t exactly durable workhorse material?
