It was another intra-squad day for the minors. Thanks as always to John Vuch for disseminating this information to us during Spring Training. But, it will be fun to get to the games that count and see who the Cardinals organization has starting and getting key innings and at bats.
It’s a backwards intra-squad day as both junior teams beat their older counterparts.
Let’s get it on!
Memphis 4, Springfield 6
Memphis
- Jess Todd started against Springfield and was “meh” over 5 IP giving up 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB with 4 K’s.
- After Jess Todd, it was a parade of lefties as Charlie Manning (1 IP, 0 ER, 1 K), Ian Ostlund, (1 IP, 1 H and three unearned runs as a result of two errors 1 BB, 2 K’s) and Royce Ring (1 IP, 1 K)
- The Memphis pitching staff was victimized by poor fielding as there was at least 3 errors by the Memphis defense.
- Tyler Greene continues to hit well and went 2-for-3 with a double
- Casey Rowlett, who I had not heard of before this year went 2-for-2 with a walk. He plays 2B and has not OPS’ed over 708 in the minors, but has steadily advanced throughout his career. He’s 26 now and is nowhere near a prospect, but it is good to see the Cards are populating players in the high minors that they have drafted and produced.
- Jon Jay, who is a definite prospect doubled, walked and had an RBI
- Matt Pagnozzi 1-for-3 with a run scored
- Brian Barton singled
- Jarrett Hoffpauir singled, walked and had an RBI
- Mark Shorey 1-for-3
Springfield
- Tyler Herron started against the level above him and struggled with a line of 3.2 IP, 9 H 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.
- Trey Hearne followed with 2 innings of 1 hit ball with 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. Now that is a line.
- Eddie Degerman went 2 shutout innings giving up only 1 hit, but he walked two.
- Brandon Buckman led Springfield by going 4-for-4 with a 2-run triple.
- Mike Folli was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Steve Hill was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
- Daniel Descalso was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Palm Beach 2, Quad Cities 4 (10 ½ innings … wait that does not seem fair)
Palm Beach
- Brian Broderick started and went 4 innings and on the plus side he struck out 4 and walked 0, but he also allowed 7 hits and 3 runs.
- Shaun Garceau followed with 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K’s
- Eduardo Sanchez pitched 1/3 of an inning with only one pitch, which was a 93 MPH fastball.
- David Carpenter 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB.
- Jorge Rondon 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s.
- Pete Kozma continues to complement his plus defense with 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Charlie Kingrey 1-for-4 with an RBI.
- Adron Chambers tripled.
- Tommy Pham had an RBI single in his only trip to the plate.
- Paul Vasquez singled and walked, Oliver Marmol singled.
Quad Cities
- Deryk Hooker actually had a good performance in the starting role today with 1 hit and 2 walks over 3 innings with 3 strikeouts.
- Chuckie Fick had next with 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER.
- Santo Maertz pitched the seventh inning giving up 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K.
- Andres Rosales followed in the eighth1 IP, 1 K. I’m hoping the super-sleeper curse is over for Andres.
- LaCurtis Mayes pitched one inning with 0 runs, 0 walks and 0 Ks.
- Joel Pichardo – 0.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K.
- Matt Frevert – 1 IP, 1 K.
- Paul Cruz 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Osvaldo Morales also went 2-for-4 with a double.
- Domnit Bolivar, who always finds his way into the Vuch Report and the DFR, singled and scored a run.
- Chris Swauger was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Charles Cutler singled and scored two runs.
- Jon Edwards doubled and Ryde Rodriguez was 1-4.
As always, thanks to John Vuch as this DFR would not be possible without his generosity.

Todd has been moved to the bullpen in Memphis, and Ottavino will be replacing him in the rotation.
Cardsfan,
Ottavino impressed them that much? I know lots have talked about Todd being a reliever in the end but after how he did last year I am surprised to see him moved so quickly.
I’m suprised by the move of Todd as well. He has been really effective as a starter, so I think it’s a little premature.
is there a link on the Todd move?
Rowlett spent a couple of years here in the QC and never really seemed to stand out to me when I saw him play. He didn’t really seem to get cheated out of AB’s, but never showed any exceptional skill as far as patience, power, etc. He seems to be an organizational JAG, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
On a different note, I’m really looking forward to getting a better look at Hooker this year and I’m excited to see this Swauger kid in the QC.
I have not seen it on the internet yet. If I see it, I will post it.
This could be a move to get Todd to the Big Club as soon as possible. He could probably be ready to step into the bullpen pretty quickly. After that the Cardinals do have a pretty decent track record of converting relievers to starters.
Porcello makes the Tigers rotation…..group hug:(
the todd move sounds like either an april fools joke . . .
or a “if kyle mcclellan really is injured” move — todd would be the next person to fill the mcclellan role if perez and mcclellan aren’t up to the job this april.
not sure which i think is more likely.
Well it could be an April Fools from Cardsfan, but he is usually very reliable on minor league moves.
Not an April Fools joke.
I guess Jose Martinez still hasn’t made it to the States?
Besides Kozma and Pham, are there any other position-player prospects at Palm Beach this year? C – Vazquez or Derba, 1B – Francisco Rivera or Arburr, 2B – Folli or Marmol, 3B – Bolivar, OF – Kingrey, Chambers, Southard, Ingram?
Thanks cardsfan1 for the info.

^^Thats the link about Todd moving to the pen.
right again, cardsfan1.
It’s sort of disappointing but not surprising. I wonder if it has something to do with Kyle McClellan’s struggles this spring.
