First and foremost Alex Eisenberg, FR contributor and man about town on Cardinal blogs has a guest post over at Pitchers Hit Eighth in which he takes a deep look at Jess Todd’s mechanics.  He comes to the defensible conclusion that the Cardinals made the right move by switching him to the bullpen.  There has been a lot of discussion for both sides of this argument, but this is a must read article, no matter how you feel now.  I’m not saying how you should feel on this topic – just read it, ok!

And now we are going to jump into the DFRs this evening as there has been plenty of discussion about Luis Perdomo, Matt Scherer and everyone in between, so let’s see how they did in the games that counted.

Quad Cities was rained out again, so we’ve got three games to track and the clubs went 2-1.

Memphis 5, New Orleans 2

  • Blake Incarcerated (I bet that is the first time you have seen a Amy Winehouse reference on Future Redbirds…as long as Blake Hawksworth continues to pitch in the minors and I continue to do DFRs, you will see it again and again.) started the game for the Redbirds and went 5 innings giving up 7 hits and 2 walks, but he also hit a batter. But on the good side, he only gave up 2 earned runs and struck out 6. He was taken out after 5 after approaching 100 pitches. He’ll hope to go deeper in his next starts.
  • After Hawksworth, came Kat Maekawa, Charlie Manning and Jess Todd (official destroyer of the Memphis 8th inning). Todd made it interesting with a walk, hit and wild pitch, but kept the Zephyrs off the board with 2 strikeouts.
  • Jon Jay playing LF went 2-4 and Allen Craig playing 3B went 2-3 with a walk.
  • Matt Pagnozzi started again at Catcher and went 0-2 with 2 walks and 2 Ks.
  • Chris Perez closed out the game with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. He also had a wild pitch.

Springfield 3, Midland 7

  • Tyler Herron started and did not have a good night. He gave up 5 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in 5.1 innings. Not a lot of good to talk about there.
  • Pete Parise stopped the bleeding with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball, but he did give up 4 walks.
  • Kenny Maiques didn’t retire the 3 batters he faced in the 8th. Ug-ly.
  • Steve Hill was playing LF and went 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI.
  • Brett Wallace was playing 3B and didn’t have his best game ever. I think it’s sadly time to bring back the ol’ golden sombrero. He was 0-4 (edited to add: with 4 strikeouts), but at least he dressed up the sombrero with a walk. Maybe it was a golden urban sombrero.
  • Mike Folli playing 3B went 2-3 with a walk.

Palm Beach 4, Jupiter 3

  • Shaun Garceau got the start and went 5 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk. Garceau got 3 strikeouts as well. Nice job Shaun.
  • Young Richard Castillo pitched two innings after that, continuing the shutout.
  • Jermaine Curtis, playing 3B went 3-4 with an RBI and a walk. But he had an error in the field.
  • Tommy Pham, playing CF went 2-5 with a double and an RBI.
  • Paul Vasquez was playing catcher and went 2-4.
  • Sam Freeman got the win with 1.1 IP of shutout innings.
  • Adam Reifer got the save even though he gave up a run.

According the the box, Maiques didn’t even throw a strike. Wow.

  2. Kasahkstanny Danny says:

Anyone concerned about Wallace and the strikeouts?

  3. Lou Schuler says:

I saw in the Memphis box that Jay got thrown out at second from the outfield. He’s already been picked off base once this season.

I seem to recall his name showing up a lot last season in the other team’s defensive notes.

Is this a pattern? Does he routinely make bad decisions on base paths? Or am I just selectively remembering some trivial details?

  4. cariocacardinal says:

Anyone know why Castillo only went 2 innings?

  5. Matt says:

@CC – He’s young and there’s a lot of innings left to throw?

  6. azruavatar says:

Memphis finally archived their video. I’m going to try and review one of Boggs/Walters/Ottavino’s starts tonight.

  7. arch support says:

When OOTP 10 comes out, I’m leaving The Destroyer as a starter, dammit.

  8. bigchieftootiemontana says:

Maybe Wallace doesn’t like being DH , gives him too much thinking time.

  9. nomar34 says:

What is the deal with Jay playing LF? Really, just because Sugar Shane is little and white does not make him a better CF…

    • fewgoodcards says:

robinson is actually a very good defensive center fielder. i have seen both of them a lot dating back to college, and robinson is the better center fielder. jay played left in college until his junior year.

    • erik says:

both are good, but I’d put the guy with the higher overall upside in center.

      • fewgoodcards says:

jay probably does have a higher upside, but robinson may have more of a future in this organization. both project to be back-up outfielders for this team, and with all the lefties we could use a righty on the bench. that leaves robinson as the clear choice.

  10. Joe says:

If Jay makes it to STL, it will be as a utility OF. I don’t see any harm in Jay gaining experience as a corner OF.

  11. Bill says:

Castillo reached his pitch count…was a bit wild last night, Garceau, however, was on cruise control…..

  12. shaneo69 says:

Kinda surprising to see Stavi starting at 1B everyday instead of Mather, while Barton DH’s or sits on the bench. Letting Pagnozzi play as much as Anderson is the bigger head-scratcher though.

Garceau had a pretty good year at PB last year, I would think he’d be up at Springfield soon, considering our Double-A team’s lack of frontline starters.

  13. FlimtotheFlam says:

Perez is walking to many guys so far. I don’t want to see him up in the Majors till he can get his walk rate under 3BB per 9.

  14. burt says:

Why hasn’t Sugar Shane been converted to 2B yet?

  15. FlimtotheFlam says:

@azryavatar He has to get his K/BB rate to at least 2.50 in AAA first at least

  16. Kasahkstanny Danny says:

What was the major league average K/BB ration for relievers last year?

  17. KD, I wouldn’t worry about those Ks for Wallace. He’s gonna hit, no matter. Albert has goose eggs hung on him every once in a while too.

For those who haven’t read much of Alex Eisenberg’s stuff (which I suspect is few of you, given his contributions around here) – he’s got a great baseball mind, and loves to put his knowledge out there. Check him out.

  18. VolsnCards5 says:

OT sorta…what drug was hooker suspended for? has it been released…just trying to figure out if it was a recreational drug or steroids…and also doesnt this mean he has been caught before…or is 50 games now the first time punishment?
