“I see that child who lay upon her bosom and who bore my name, a man winning his way up in that path of life which once was mine. I see him winning it so well, that my name is made illustrious there by the light of his. I see the blots I threw upon it, faded away. I see him, fore-most of just judges and honoured men, bringing a boy of my name, with a forehead that I know and golden hair, to this place– then fair to look upon, with not a trace of this day’s disfigurement –and I hear him tell the child my story, with a tender and a faltering voice.
It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”
Don’t forget to go onto Springfield’s website today and vote which former SP Cardinal will be called up next to the show, following in the footsteps of Colby Rasmus. Currently leading the way is Jess Todd, over Adam Ottavino, Clayton Mortensen, Matt Scherer and PJ Walters.
Both Anthony Reyes and PJ Walters start tomorrow in the Major Leagues. Two former Cardinals Pitchers of the Year will toe the rubber and try to fulfill the promise they shown. One was dominate in the minors though never did what the on-field management wanted while on the main club, while the other hopes to do exactly what they want and try to reclaim some of his dominance. Who lasts longer tomorrow and who gives up fewer runs? Even better, who strikes out more batters?
The farm system was a perfect 4-0 tonight. There was even a Chris Carpenter sighting!!!
Memphis 7, NOLA 4
- Pardon me while a strap on my bulletproof vest. Ok, with that out of the way…Adam Ottavino sucked. I did not watch the game, but going by the boxscore alone he lasted only 4 innings, recording 5 groundouts, 5 flyouts and only 2 strikeouts. He also walked 4 batters, gave up 3 ER on 5 hits. He and Bryan Anderson also combined to allow 4 stolen bases, 3 of which came in the 2nd inning. Maybe by not actually watching the game, I missed something positive about this and if I did, good for Adam.
- Royce Ring picked up the win by going 2 innings and only allowing a hit.
- There are two types of people in the world, those that understand Matt Scherer and those that don’t understand binary code. Scherer’s line: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO.
- The Destroyer, apparently in spite of my prayers before bed, is still pitching in relief. He’s also still destroying, going 2 innings, striking out 2 and doing so with a 3:1 GO:FO rate. He did give up 2 hits. With Boggs likely sent down, I wonder what the rotation for Memphis is going to look like. Kat took Walters spot the other night, but the Cardinals might hedge their bets and not seen Boggs down in fear that Walters gets rocked and they need someone to take his slot next time through. Jess Todd. I’m just sayin’.
- Shane Robinson continues to get on base at a ridiculous pace. He was 2 for 5 with a RBI.
- Chief Justice ruled 2-to-3 on a double, a RBI and a run scored.
- Joe Mather finally broke out of his funk, hitting a 3-RBI double and coming around to score. If Chris Duncan continues to hit LHP, we might not have any room for Joe on the big league roster.
- Allen Craig, the 3B who wanders in from the cold and out into LF, continues to hit over .400, going 1-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Springfield 11, Frisco 9
- Justin Fiske wasn’t helped by his defense tonight, literally his OWN defense. Three of the 5 runs he gave up came in the 4th inning when he and Descalso threw the ball away. Overall, Fiske only lasted those 4 innings, giving up 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2.
- Chrysanthemum Linares worked 1.1 innings and was a little better. He gave up 2 ERs on 2 hits with 1 strikeout.
- Elvis Hernandez felt the lows of a blown save and the highs of a win in his .2 innings of work. Coming on for Linares, he gave up a 2 run single (both inherited from Linares) and then got out of the inning on a caught stealing. Amazing game baseball is.
- Pete Parise only threw 1 inning giving up 4 hits, 2 ERs and walking 1. Tyler Norrick was much more effective in his 1.0 innings, striking out 2, walking 1 and only yielding 1 hit.
- Rebounding a bit, Francisco Samuel picked up the save by walking a batter and striking out 2.
- Donovan Solano was 2-for-5 with 1 RBI and an error in the field. Seriously, was Tyler Greene really the only shortstop in the system NOT to make an error today?
- Coo Coo Ca Choo, welcome back. The Walrus was hit by a pitch, walked twice and was 1-for-3 with a double.
- Daryl Jones is awake. Hitting him twice must have only made him angrier. He unleashed (while he wasn’t ducking, apparently) a 3-for-4 day with double off the pitcher who hit him twice. He drove in a run.
- Daniel Descalso, error notwithstanding, had a good day. He was 2-for-6 with 3 RBI. Coming up a HR and single short of the cycle, he had to settle for a double and triple.
- Mark Hamilton walked thrice and was 1-for-2 in official at-bats.
- Steven Hill, no…not the guy from Mission:Impossible or Adam Schiffe, was 1-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI.
Palm Beach 3, Sarasota 2
- Nick Additon had the right equation in his 4 innings. He gave up 1 hit, 2 BB and subtracted 1 batter by strikeout.
- Blake King was amazingly bad. He only recorded 1 out (by strikeout), while walking 4 and giving up 2 R (1 ER). Throw some strikes!
- David Kopp picked up the win by pitching 2.2 innings of shutout ball. He struckout 3, walked one and gave up 2 hits.
- Adam Reifer blazed his way to another save, striking out one. Just Say No to blowing smoke saves.
- Francisco Rivera was the offensive hero of the day, driving in 3 runs over the span of 2 innings. He hit a sacrifice fly in the 5th and a 2-run double in 6th.
- Pete Kozma was 1-for-4 with 2 errors, his total up to 4 now.
- Curt Smith wasn’t tilting at windmills today as the DH. He was 1-for-4.
Quad Cities 8, Peoria 6
- Miguel Chinese-Tapia turned in 4 quality innings. He had a hit and a strikeout for every inning he pitched and walked 1 batter. He gave up 1 unearned run.
- The Mayor Gary Daley went 1 inning, with 1 R, 2 SO and 1 Hit.
- Scott McGregor struck out 5 over 3 innings. He unfortunately yielded 4 runs (2 ER) on 3 hits.
- Ramon Delgado picked up his first save with 1 hit and 1 strikeout.
- Niko Vasquez had 2 of the Riverbandits 6 errors on the night. He also went 1-for-4 with a stolen base. You boot the ball, no funny story.
- Chris Swauger must think mighty highly of himself. He was 1-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. He also threw a runner out at home.
- Osvaldo was just a patsy Morales went 1-for-3 with a 2-run homerun off of Peoria starter Chris Carpenter.
Get to bed early, children. Tomorrow is an early start for PJ Walters day. It will either be the start of something grand or another chapter in the Island of Mike Parisi’s Misfit Pitchers. I’m hoping it will, if only for 1 start, perplex the Cubs and leave us all marveling at how the ball paused in mid-air, merely oscillated and changed directions…striking the batter out at the hands.

Daryl also gunned down a runner at 3rd, to boot. Welcome back, D.J.!
What you did with the ‘ugh’ in ‘through’ up there is nothing short of brilliant.
Not to detract from the radiance that is HL but that’s something the wordpress software is doing automatically despite my best efforts to shut it down.
I think. It could be HL’s brilliance too. Believe what you will.
Don’t be hatin’ robot.
Why isn’t Shane Robinson in the outfielder-turned-second baseman program? He’s perfect for it. Will he ever get a chance in the outfield? NO. Why not the infield?
you’re doing a good job, HL keep it up
I don’t expect to see Todd at all this year in St. Louis – barring desperation. In a lot of ways I don’t want to see him promoted. We are going to have massive 40 man roster problems this Winter as it is. I fear we are going to lose several prospects (all of which exceed Perdomo in value by the way) in the Rule V draft as it is, and putting Todd on the 40 man roster means we have one less we can protect.
Which, of course, brings up a point about Perdomo. If management didn’t project him to make the ML team this year, and knew he couldn’t be protected next year – then putting him on the 40 man roster meant that he’d have to be DFA at some point. Whereupon he could be picked up by any team and immedately placed in their minor league system. [See Brian Barden as an example.] It’s better to lose a player by the Rule V draft than it is on waivers.
I agree with Chessed, there is no reason why they would being up Jess Todd, only three seasons with the organization he doesn’t need protecting and teams are not too quick to start the MLB clock ticking too early unless desperate.
Congrats to PJ, who proves it’s sometimes better to take from the farm then someone else’s backyard.
Just to nip this in the bud, I never said they were bringing up Jess Todd. I was just pointing out the poll question on SpringfieldCardinals.com and how Jess Todd was leading even though PJ Walters was 12 hours away from his MLB Debut.
Sorry if it sounded like I thought you said they were bringing Todd up. I see somany of these comments that say “Bring Wallace up” [or Todd up] that I wanted to bring up the reasons why they shouldn’t come up.
The Cardinals are usually very good with their management of the 40 man roster. I’ve spent 11 years in KC and 4 years in Colorado – and have been often frustrated by how often they’d pick up a player and have to DFA someone off of the 40 man roster. It would be comical if it made any sense.
And then there are the upcoming problems we will have this Winter. It’s a good problem if you lose several players in the Rule V draft, but I will hate to see those players go.
Or we over-rate our system, in which case we should be more worried!
I don’t know what players we are potentially losing but it’d be great to see someone do a list of potential losses and how we can package them with Ankiel to bring something back this summer.
In the Perdomo article a couple days ago there was a link posted to a great article that covered that (as of February 2nd). At that time there were 59 players in our system that would need protecting this year. Obviously most of those won’t be drafted, but…
Here’s the link again, it’s an eye opening article. On the other hand, it’s real good to have this problem.

Could that link be added to this site permanently … maybe on the Prospect Lists page? I went ahead and bookmarked it on my computer after asking for it a couple of days ago, but perhaps adding it as a link somewhere here would save some comments about it later … just so everyone doesn’t have to go through looking at all the posts for that link.
