I’m back late from a Cory Spinks-Ryan Latimore boxing match. I won’t spoil the outcome in case anyone reading the DFR has it DVR’d. We’ll do the full link round-up in Saturday’s DFR.
We’ve got winners with the exception of QC tonight.
- Tyler Greene was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. He’s got a .388 OBP and he’s showing the best plate discipline of his career with walk % highs since 2006 and strikeout % lows since 2005. He’s always had an intriguing mix of power and defense but there were significant questions about his ability to make consistent contact. It’s only been 58ABs but keep an eye on Tyler.
- With David Freese (1-for-4) back in Memphis playing 3rd, Allen Craig was moved to LF and had a 1-for-3 outing with a walk and a double. I think that’s the right arrangement if you want Memphis to win but the wrong arrangement if you want to get Craig to STL. I still think he’s a slightly below average defender with an above average bat in the bigs.
- Clayton Mortensen needed 102 pitches to get through 6.1 solid innings. He walked too many batters (5) but he only allowed 2 hits and 1 run. He struck out 3 while once again showing excellent GB rates with a 10:5 GO:AO ratio.
- Jess Todd, aka The Destroyer, picked up the win with a 1 walk, 2 strikeout 9th.
- Daryl Jones was 2-for-5. He also had his 3rd SB of the season.
- Andrew Johnston decided to pitch to Brett Wallace and will probably be regretting that decision or at least the pitch selection. Wallace took him yard for a walk off HR. He was 2-for-4 with a walk and the walkoff for the night.
- Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Brad Furnish must have had the same pregame warmup routine as Mort because he walked 6 in his 5 innings. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 1 on his way to 3 ER. Dave Duncan gets credit for teaching a lot of major league pitchers to throw strikes but I have serious questions about the ability of the system to correct control issues in their young pitchers. It’s a continuing problem throughout the system.
- Francisco Samuel picked up the blown save and the win thanks to Wallace. He recorded 1 K while allowing 2 hits and an ER.
- Adron Chambers was 3-for-6 out of the leadoff spot with 4 runs scored.
- Pete Kozma was 2-for-5 with a double.
- Curt Smith was 3-for-3 with a HR and a HBP. He recorded 6 RBIs.
- Nick Derba was 3-for-5.
- All the damage was done against Lance Lynn who went 4 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 ER. His command was impeccable as he walked no batters and struck out 5.
- Brian Broderick was the other half of the piggyback tandem pitching 4 innings of 1-hit ball.
- Brett Lilley was 1-for-4 with a walk.
- Niko Vazquez was 1-for-4 with a walk and a double. What’s odd is that I’m pretty sure I saw Niko KO somebody in an undercard match last night. . .
- Alex Castellanos was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Ryde Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a HR and 4 RBIs.
- Andres Rosales started the match but allowed 3 runs over 3.2 innings. He struck out 4 but walked 2 and allowed 3 hits including one that left the park.
- David Carpenter was the lone pitching bright spot recording 4 outs (3 punchouts) and allowing just one hit.
- Chuckie Fick allowed 8 hits in 3 innings for 4 runs (3 earned). He struck out 5 and walked 1.

Um, you forgot a Wallace walk off homerun?
it’s in there. keep trying.
I disagree on Craig’s route to STL. To STL, it appears his best route in through the outfield. His best route to the majors may very well be 3B
The sweet science. I’ll take good ol’ boxing over the mookish UFC garbage anytime.
Ryde’s HR was a GS, at least according to the big scoreboard at Busch last night.
is curt smith ever going to stop hitting? seems like he’s in these things everynight…is he even a adequate defender? may be future trade bait if he can keep this up
I was going to pose the question to the community as to what other positions he should be trying to play. His bat has been on fire this season, ST and WBC time as well.
What’s with shortstops named Greene? It’s like they’re both doubles from Bizarro World who usurped their real world counterparts.
Keep on walkin’, boys!
Great to hear tyler is improving his patience at the plate. There’s a looming hole at ss in 2010.
Walrus is still made of awesome.
And I’ll take that performance from mort. Any possibility we could get a rehabbing carp to tour the minors and talk about control?
