This is our first installment of ‘Guess the Future Redbird’. I’ll start out with something easy.

As the first month of action draws to a close, we have a few shake ups in the farm due to movements towards the big club.
- Memphis didn’t like that cheap shot I took at their limp bats last night in the DFR, so they made sure that 80% of their hits were XBH. Unfortunately, they only had 5 hits!
- David Freese, locked out of the organizational shuffle of infielders, hit his first PCL HR. He was 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Jon Jay and Bryan Anderson both were 1-for-3 with a double. Jay stole a base while Anderson drove in a run.
- Donovan Solano, in his first PCL game, went 0-for-3 with 2 errors. Ouch, babe.
- In fairness, Solano was throwing to 1B Nick Stavinoha. The Stavinfection is trying to win the Memphis Redbird Oquendo Award for 2009. He hopes of one day staring in his own painful McDonald’s commercial.
- Joe Mather, counting the days until Rick Ankiel is traded, was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
- Clayton Mortensen was solid for his 3rd straight start. The encouraging thing about this go-round was that he only walked 1, while striking out 4. He gave up 5 hits in 6 innings yielding only 1 earned run.
- Royce Ring picked up a hold by pitching a perfect inning (1 K) while Josh Kinney did as well. Kinney continues to struggle with command, walking a batter, giving up a hit and striking out another.
- The Destroyer recorded his 5th save, throwing a scoreless 9th with a 1 hit to 1 strikeout ratio.
Springfield 6, Northish but a little Westish too Arkansas 2
- Please don’t trade DJ Tools for pitching if you were ever thinking of that, Mo. Toolsy went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
- The long ball was flying out of Arvest Ballpark. James Rapoport (1-for-5), Coo Coo Ca Choo (1-for-5) and Mark Hamilton (1-for-4) all went deep. Hamilton’s was a 2-run shot, the others were solo jobs.
- Andrew Brown was 3-for-4 with a double.
- Tyler Herron, rebounding from 2 previous terrible appearances went 6 innings and scattered 7 hits around. He walked a batter and struck out 4 while giving up 2 earned runs. Seems like he was more lucky than good but after giving up 9 runs in a combined 6 innings lately, I’m sure he’ll take this.
- Eddie Dergerman pitched 1.2 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 1.
- Francisco Samuel got the save after 1.1 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 4. Let that sink in. Every out he got came way of strike out.
- Again, no XBH. Sigh.
- Curt Smith played both LF and 1B (not at the same time!) and picked up another hit (1-for-4). He also swung his arms like a windmill and threw a runner out at 3rd for his 1st OF assist.
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-4.
- Adron Chambers continued his hot hitting, going 1-for-5 with a stolen base.
- Shaun Garceau was tonight’s starter, going his allotted 4 innings. They got 3 hits off of him, walked once and he struck them out twice. Only 1 run scored.
- Eduardo Sanchez pitched a scoreless frame of 2 hit, 1 strikeout ball.
- Richard Castillo took the loss. He didn’t last 3 innings (2.1) giving up 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs (4 ER).
- Sam Freeman came in to finish the inning and walked 2, struck out 2 while giving up 1 hit.
Quad Cities 4, The Knute Rocknies South Bend 2
- Niko Vasquez 0-for-1 with 3 BBs, 2 runs scored. Be still my beating heart.
- Jon Edwards, 2-for-3 with a 2B and 1 RBI.
- Roberto Espinoza, generic Walker Texas Ranger villain, was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Osvaldo on the 3rd floor of the Book Depository Morales had 3 RBIs tonight to go along with his 2 (for-4) hits.
- George Brown pitched 4 innings tonight, giving up 5 hits. He was only tagged with 1 ER and he struck out 2, walking 1.
- The Mayor Gary Daley picked up the win with his 3.1 innings of work. The Mayor had a tidy 4:4 BB:SO night, getting hit 3 times. He too gave up 1 ER.
- Ramon Delgado finished of Daley’s last inning with a strikeout for a hold.
- Casey Mulligan would like another chance at that one batter, but will have to settle for 2 strikeouts and 1 groundout for his save.
The continued lack of control by the farm system is a serious problem. I’m hoping that it is simply youthfulness and the trials of early seasons in new locales. Otherwise, I missed the memo on the organizational philosophy of not throwing strikes. They can’t hit what they literally can’t hit!!!

I still want to see pitchf/x for Eddie D’s curve. Can we get Mo to call him up for a game just for me?
Descalso has now been on base in all 28 career Double-A games extending his hit streak to 13 games in a row and 18 of 19 games on the year and 26 of 28 games in Double-A, Craig Cooper of San Antonio is the Texas League leader with a 15 gamer which is still active.
Richard Castillo can’t strike anyone out. How long till the injury rumor mill starts up? Maybe I should just launch it this morning — I’ll bet he’s hurt.
the picture is PJ Walters?
I blame the lack of control in the minors solely on the decision to cut Jameson Maj, soon-to-be ace of the So. Ill. Miners.
Agreed on the DJ Tools comment. I want to see him in our lineup someday.
He’s the bees knees.
The picture is of Clayton Mortensen pitching against Atlanta Braves on March 9, 2008. It was his first time to pitch for the big league club. Last night was his 4th straight quality start for Memphis. era 1.48 for 24+ innings.
I would like to hereby initiate The “Leave ‘The Bees Knees’ In The Cultural Wasteland Where It Belongs” People’s Front.
The LTBKITCWWIBPF’s primary purpose? To harangue The Bee’s Knees Coalition whenever possible with, say, rude gestures, witty bon mots, and generally disapproving looks.
We’ll meet down at the VFW on the Tuesday after the first Sunday of every month, because meeting on the Thursday after the third Monday would be silly.
Coffee and Danishes will be provided. Supply your own solidarity lapel pins.
the guy in the picture looks like he is wearing glasses. Does P.J. wear glasses sometimes.
Mort’s doing a good job of making Straus and who ever his “source” was in the organization look pretty stupid when they said he’d only projects in middle relief at best.
windmills… funny stuff.
Does anyone know why Stavinoha has been playing 1st instead of the OF and Allen Craig is playing OF not 1st.
Craig has more future with the team than Stavinoha does and we don’t need a new 1st basemen…that is about the only reason I can see.
Picture = Jess Todd?
photo quiz=mitchell boggs
i think i see a little red beard in there with the glasses — josh kinney?
Perhaps if we could see the player, it would be a bit more fun?
That’s not the point. If I showed the player, the game would last 1 person. I’m pretty sure most of you know what Clayton looks like.
The way he holds his glove should have been a pretty good clue. The more obscure the player, the more of him I’ll show.
