5 games today as May comes to a close. Straight to the DFR.

How many lanterns is it for ‘by internet’? There’s a lot of links tonight so we’re jumping early. 5 games tonight as Memphis has a double header today. This might be the longest DFR I’ve written this year. Sit back, relax and enjoy. Be sure to drop your draft questions in the thread below. The system for the night: shutout loss, shutout loss, victory, loss. We’re going to do a Q&A if you will for some questions on the draft. Leave your questions in the comments and on Monday, I’ll go through and have our draft gurus (erik, fewgoodcards, picklefork) respond with their wealth of knowledge. The questions can be related to the Cardinals draft or a few to just general draft questions. Then later next week we’ll post the responses! We’re also planning on having an open chat on the draft day (at least day one) so be sure to stop by then. Step right up and win a prize! We had one team only get 4 hits and another get 5, guess which one won? This is not a ranking of my top draft prospects, but rather the order I would draft these players if I were in charge of the draft for the Cardinals. I only went down to #19 because at worst the Cardinals are going to have a chance to draft one of these guys. Of course I am probably being a little too optimistic putting guys like Matthew Purke and Donovan Tate on the list because even if they do fall (as some have recently projected they might) I doubt DeWitt will be willing to match their price tag. Of course we could always hope that he has been paying attention to Rick Porcello this season and has realized that elite talent is worth the elite price tag. Well, enough with the negative. Check out my list and rip it apart. This post is designed to generate draft discussion. Let me know your favorites. Last time we looked at the past first round picks from 1990 to the present, this time let’s look at the Cardinal first round picks from 1989 to the beginning of the draft. The win above replacement totals are career totals and are from BaseballProjection.com. My feeling is the Cardinals did pretty well, overall. Like any team, they had their share of busts and successes but the successes are pretty noteworthy.
We had a 1 hitter and a whole lotta offense. Let’s get rollin’. Go CAVS!

Q and A with Matt Baker, Springfield Cardinal beatwriterPosted by erik in Brett Wallace, Curt Smith, Daniel Descalso, Daryl Jones, Francisco Samuel, Interviews, Mark Hamilton, Pete Kozma, Trey HearneMatt Bakers covers the S-Cards for the Springfield News-Leader, and has stepped right in where Kary Booher has left off in putting together some great coverage for the team. You just don’t get the sort of coverage he brings from most AA teams, and he was kind enough to take some time out of his schedule and answer some of my questions about the team and his impressions of the players. First and foremost, I’ll be out in San Francisco for the Friday and Saturday games for the big clubs, so if you are heading over to the games, let me know. I’ll raise a pint of Anchor Steam to you and give you some dap. I know, it doesn’t make sense for me to go all the way from the east coast to the west coast to catch a game, but it works for me for this weekend. Also, Memphis’s game is starting at 10pm, so I’m not going to even chance going over that game, so I’ll update the post in the morning. Here’s the gameday. This will be your late night insomniacs’ anonymous Memphis game thread. HL should be lurking? Enough of that – on to the prospects. Shane Peterson gets a write-up from John Sickels over at Minor League Ball.
Another prospect fav Arquimedes Nieto is apparently not blinding the Midwest League with science or pure heat. He rarely hits 90 MPH on his the radar gun, but does mix his pitches well. He also has been known to start batters off with his offspeed pitches and bring them back to his fastball. Peterson was showing off his lack of pure power today with 2 singles and Nieto did not blind West Michigan with anything. |
