Memphis and Springfield get postponed due to weather as I luck out with a short DFR.
For any of you that might care, and it’s probably not many, I’m tenatively planning to spend the weekend in Quad Cities May 23-25th for the Sat, Sun and Mon games. I’d be thrilled to spend the day watching prospects with other informed fans.
Another article on the Lance Lynn promotion. The Cardinals remain very aggressive with their prospects in promotions. Personally, I think this had a negative impact on Mortensen’s development last year so I hope Lynn spends some time at AA.
- Adron Chambers was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Chambers was, well, a weak hitting outfielder in 2008 with a .238/.322/.345 line at Quad Cities. It might be time to take notice of Chambers as he hits .360/.415/.533 thus far at Palm Beach.
- Palm Beach totaled just 5 hits and 1 walk. They did do their best to take advantage of their time on base, however, stealing 4 bases.
- Nick Additon brought his A game with 6 hitless frames. He walked 3 and struck out 4. He had 9 groundouts against 5 flyouts.
- Chuckie Fick tossed 2 scoreless innings for his PB debut. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2 with 4 groundouts.
- Adam Reifer imploded in the 9th taking the blown save and the loss. He hit a batter and walked a batter to start the inning. They got the lead runner on a bad bunt but Micheal Stanton doubled in one runner. Matt Dominguez then singled on a pop up to the SS (not sure how that happens) scoring the other runner.
- Charles Cutler and Jon Edwards both went 2-for-4.
- Brian Buck went 0-for-3 with 3 strikeouts. He has a .366 OPS so far this season under the overhang of “The Curse of Liam”. Jameson Maj waves from the distance.
- Scott McGregor struck out 4 in 5 innings. He walked 1 and allowed 3 hits for 2 ER.
- Miguel Tapia walked 2 and allowed 2 hits in 2.1 innings. He was tagged for 1 ER as Ramon Delgado allowed an inherited runner to score. Delgado proceeded to allow the go ahead run in the 8th as Clinton took the lead and held onto it to close out the game.

anyway we can get a scouting report on one of lynn’s starts at spingfield?..would love to see of that velocity has returned and how his offspeed stuff plays
I originally agreed with you about Mortensen being pushed too fast but seeing the results this year it is hard to criticize their strategy.
the 1.48 ERA is nice, but he’s striking out just less than 6 batters per nine and walking 4 per nine. He’s getting ground-outs, but not at the rate he did in AA and below.
don’t misunderstand me, i like mortensen quite a bit but he’s not pitching quite as well as you seem to be suggesting.
“I hope Lynn spends some time at AA.”
I didn’t even know he had a drinking problem.
Hyuk, hyuk.
Strauss mentioned a bullpen move that could be made by tomorrow for the Phillies game, and he said that they’ll still remain with 8 relievers. Wonder who could be coming up.
I’m afraid Brian Buck may go the way of Jameson Maj sometime soon. I motion that Liam is no longer allowed to have any pet prospects :)
As for Mortensen, I agree that he needs to improve his K/BB rates. On the other hand, he’s only allowed 15 hits in 24.1 IP, good for a .179 opp BA. This may just be an anomaly, considering his BABIP is only .222, but it’s encouraging nonetheless. I like Mort’s potential quite a bit, especially if he can improve his K/BB rates (which seem to be an issue for most young sinkerballers.)
The fast track didn’t hurt Mortensen a bit he just ran out of gas last year he was great when he first got to Memphis and still had good numbers up until the last month last year when he gassed out and got crushed, He’s looked great in person his 3 starts of his I have seen live this year.
He’s lost some ground outs to errors and he has tons of weak up ups on infield or lazy fly balls and when he needs one to he can strike guys out, Clayton is the last SP we need to worry about in the system he’s a legit talent.
Pierce–
Sadly, it’s probably PJ Walters down and Brad Thompson up.
Bleh. I think Walters needs to be sent down, but I am so tired of Brad Thompson. They don’t need 13 pitchers.
Pj is probably a certainty to go down. I’d hope it might be mort or the hawk. Both are on the 40 man, right? Other than thompson kinney would be the last name to come to mind. Scherer is on the roster too.
But PK is such a known and uninteresting quantity at this point. I’d like to see what the other guys can do. Boggs has been a pleasant surprise so far.
Why not the hawk? We’ve gotta find out whether he sinks or swims and probably this season. Now’s as good a time as any. Mort probably has been pushed as far as he ought to go.
Mortensen is not on the 40-man.
I think the fact that he is “known and uninteresting” is exactly why he is coming up (saw a post on Cardinals Nation stating it was him). TLR may have taken to using rookies and young players more but he hasn’t been willing to give over the keys to the kingdom to unproven players just yet. Motte had a short leash, Rasmus isn’t even playing CF every time he plays.
Don’t blame this one on me! Watching some drills, Buck’s outfield arm stood out as the strongest on the field among the A-ball candidates. He missed last year to TJ, I believe, and was drafted out of community college, so I didn’t have any kind of offensive profile for him.
Not a pet prospect so much as an intriguing low-rounder that I know very little about.
If it is indeed Thompson down and Walters up, I’d be okay with that on the basis that I think Thompson could fill the role better. I’d like to see Walters starting anyhow. Of course, I’d rather see Todd, but that just not gonna happen yet. I hate the 8 man bullpen, but the only position player who even warrants a promotion is Shane Robinson and I doubt he’d get much PT. They could try to bring up Mather in hopes that being back in the bigs would recapture his confidence, but I don’t see how they can truly justify promoting a guy with a .139 average.
If there is some interest I drew up a “DJ Tools” jersey back for a FR t-shirt.
I’d be interested in seeing it — also, I know you left a comment a while back about a banner that doesn’t overlap into the links at the top of the page. If you’d send that too, I’d be appreciative.
Lance Lynn very solid in his AA debut: 5 IP 0 ER 6 K 2 BB with 5 ground outs to 3 fly outs.
PROMOTE HIM NOW!
