Well here we are, just over a month away from the draft.  This is usually the month when everyone starts to really ramp up their draft coverage, so we should start seeing more in the way of scouting reports and rankings in the coming weeks.  Here at future redbirds we will start to pick up our coverage as well.  Leading up to the draft look for player profiles and rankings as well as mock drafts.  We will look at the candidates for the first round as well as try to identify some guys for the later rounds that fit the Cardinals’ profile.  For now though you will have to settle for the wrap.  Check it out after the break.

Friday

Stephen Strasburg, RHP, San Diego St.

8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 12 K

What is there to say?

Alex White, RHP, North Carolina

6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Doesn’t dominate like his stuff would make you think.

Kyle Gibson, RHP, Mizzou

8 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

This line is similar to a lot of the pitchers below, quite a few runs for a low number of base runners.

Andrew Oliver, LHP, Oklahoma St.

8.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 9 K

Look at the Gibson comment.  Oliver does have good stuff from the left side, and if he keeps throwing strikes he will go very high.

Rex Brothers, LHP, Lipscomb

9 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

Brothers may have the best left handed arm in the college class.

James Paxton, LHP, Kentucky

8 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 12 K

Once again a lot of runs for a low WHIP.

Brooks Raley, LHP, Texas A&M

7.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

He can’t match the stuff of lefties like Brothers, Paxton, and Oliver, but he knows how to pitch.

Alex Wilson, RHP, Texas A&M

1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Sam Dyson, RHP, South Carolina

8.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

The Tommy John survivor has big time stuff, but his numbers don’t look great.  He is one of the hardest guys to place in the draft because he is still rather raw, and he has the extra leverage of being a draft eligible sophomore.

Aaron Miller, OF, Baylor

3-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI

At one time considered the top prospect in this class, Miller still has the ideal rightfield prototype with a power arm and bat.  The question is will he hit for enough average, and some clubs may prefer his arm on the mound.

Chris Dominguez, 3B, Louisville

2-5, HR, SB

Dominguez has as much raw power as anyone in the draft, and he is a surprisingly good athlete for his size as the steal was his 17th of the year.  A team that believes he will make enough contact to use his power could pop him pretty early.

Saturday

Jason Stoffel, RHP, Arizona

1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

The draft’s top closer prospect finally pitches like it.

Dustin Ackley, OF/1B, North Carolina

2-4, HR, 3 RBI

You have to love the increased power this year.

Jared Mitchell, OF, LSU

2-4, 2B, RBI

Super athlete will go to a team that prefers tools.  He is a little more raw than the typical college star due to the time he has spent on the football field.

Blake Smith, OF, California

2-5, 2B

Another rightfield prototype.

Chris Dominguez, 3B, Louisville

2-5

Sunday

Alex Wilson, RHP, Texas A&M

3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

I would like to see him back in the rotation.  He will surely head back there in pro ball.

Robert Stock, RHP, USC

7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 10 K

Really pitching well lately.  I haven’t seen a scouting report on his stuff, but his impressive strikeout totals lead you to believe that it is pretty strong.

Jared Mitchell, OF, LSU

2-5, 2 RBI

Brett Jackson, OF, California

2-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 BB

5-tool centerfielder should pop early as one of the few potential stars in the college crop.

Blake Smith, OF, California

2-5, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Robbie Shields, SS/2B, Florida Southern

2-5 in game 1 and 2-5 in game 2

Doesn’t have the tools you expect in a top of the draft middle infielder, but he knows how to play the game.

I was wondering is there any chance Crow would drop to our spot? I’m guessing not, but just wondering if anyone had and idea about him. I know he makes his independent debut today.

i would doubt it. the only way he drops that far would be bonus demands, and we know if that is the case we wouldn’t take him anyway.

I may go check out Brothers on Friday. If I do, I’ll leave my comments on him in your writeup next Monday.
