Ben Badler of Baseball America recently chatted:

Dan (Tulsa OK): Is Clayton Mortenson a legit mid-rotation prospect for the Cards? After 5 starts, his opponent avg and era looks great, but the K/BB not so much.

SportsNation Ben Badler: He looks like a 5th starter/long reliever type to me.

I disagree with Badler here. Mortensen’s starts have shown an improved changeup. He’s still generating a sick number of groundballs (53% prior to tonight’s game) even if he’s not striking out a ton of batters. His command has regressed back to college levels which is concerning but I think he’s more than just a swing man.

Brian Walton has the low down on the changes to the tandem pitching arrangement in Quad Cities.

Springfield 10, Arkansas 9

  • HIT PARTY!!!!
  • Antonio DeJesus went 3-for-4 with a pair of walks.
  • Daryl Jones and Brett Wallace both went 2-for-6. Wallace had a double.
  • Steve Hill was 3-for-5 with a HR.
  • Daniel Descalso was 3-for-5 with a HR and a double.
  • Mark Hamilton was 3-for-5 with a pair of HRs.
  • Lance Lynn went 5.2 innings allowing 7 runs (2 earned). He allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 Ks. All of the damage was done in the 9 run 6th inning. Andrew Brown committed a fielding error preserving Lynn’s ERA but Lynn didn’t do much to help himself out the inning either. Another one of those scoring decisions that messes with traditional stats.
  • Eddie Degerman was the real problem child though. Degerman walked 4 straight batters without retiring anyone. Those walks resulted in all the baserunners that Lynn had left scoring.
  • Brad Furnish came in and walked another batter before getting out of the inning.
  • Tyler Norrick picked up his 3rd save with 2 scoreless innings striking out 2.

Quad Cities 5, Cedar Rapids 3

  • Brett Lilley keeps on walking going 0-for-2 with a pair of free passes.
  • Chris Swauger went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double.
  • Osvaldo Morales laced 2 doubles in 4 trips to the plate.
  • Kevin Thomas had relatively (for him) bad outing allowing 2 runs in 4 innings. He walked 4 batters without striking anyone out.
  • Hector Cardenas allowed just one hit and 2 walks while striking out 4 in 4 IP.
  • Casey Mulligan picked up save #8 with a 1 hit, 1 earned run performance. He struck out the side.

And the Descalso train just keeps on a-rollin’.

  2. Pierce says:

Mulligan has struck out the side the past 3 outings in 3 innings, has 13 strikeouts in his past 5 IP, a K:BB ratio of 26:2, and an opponent avg of .093. Moving on up…

while i’m higher on mortensen than badler, we could’ve had brett cecil!

The 2007 draft seems to be turning into the most underwhelming of the Luhnow drafts so far. It seems like they missed with every pick in their first five.

I guess if Descalso becomes an allstar second baseman, I could be wrong.

Todd was a miss? Mortensen who was in AAA his first season is already a miss? Kopp hasn’t show much at all so I agree there. And lastly, Kozma has been exactly what they expected so far, weak bat with room to grow but slick fielding, even with the errors so far. I would in no way say that this was comparable to 2005, but I think it is comparable to 2006 where Jay and Perez are about all we have to show for those first 5 picks right now.

  7. PJ says:

Ummmm…..Jess Todd was also one of the top 5 picks. And give Kozma a couple more years before you write him off as a “miss”—-so we didn’t draft Porcello….get over it!

we should get a little up/down promotion/demotion meter to run along the margins of the threads and track who’s overperforming and pushing for a promotion. mulligan would top that list. DJ tools and Descalso would be up there, too.
