Life is conspiring against elongated DFRs this weekend. It’s 1:06AM and I’m getting back from a wedding that started at 2:00PM. Great reception party obviously.  I apologize in advance for typographical errors — I’m letting one eye rest while the other stays open to keep things running smoothly.

Memphis 5, Iowa 4

  • Bryan Anderson was 2-for-5 with a HR. He’s hitting .259/.306/.431 on the season which isn’t so hot. Not that it’s an excuse but you have to wonder what the catcher arrangement at Memphis may be doing to Anderson mentally.
  • David Freese was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Nick Stavinoha went yard.
  • Blake Hawksworth had a good game tossing 7 innings of 4 run ball. He struck out 10 and walked just 2 with 5 hits. All the damage came on a grandslam in the 7th.
  • Fernando Salas tossed a scoreless frame striking out 1. He would pick up the win. . .
  • . . . .with Jess Todd getting the save. Todd was walked a batter and allowed 2 hits but managed to wiggle out of the situation and end the game.

Springfield 4, Arkansas 1

  • Daryl Jones was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Andrew Brown and Pete Kozma were both 2-for-4.
  • Ryan Kulik somehow managed to only allow 1 run despite 10 baserunners in 6.1 innings. He was helped out with an outfield asisst, a double play and 2 successful pickoffs.
  • Pete Parise tossed 2 scoreless frames allowing 2 hits and striking out 1.
  • Francisco Samuel picked up his 7th save striking out 2 and walking 1.

Palm Beach 6, Charlotte 5

  • Curt Smith was 3-for-5 with a HR.
  • Tommy Pham had a triple but struck out in his other 4 at bats. GOLDEN SOMBRERO!!!!
  • Francisco Rivera had the offensive game of the night going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
  • Domnit Bolivar was 2-for-4.
  • David Kopp had a messy stat line in his 5.2 innings. He walked 3 and allowed 6 hits for 2 runs including a HR. He also struck out 2 batters. Not one zero in that whole line.
  • Thomas Eager retired 4 batters striking out 2 and allowing a hit.
  • Eduardo Sanchez struck out 1 and walked 1 in his 2nd save of the season.

Quad Cities 6, Cedar Rapids 15 (resumed from 5/8)

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2 (8 innings)

  • Brett Lilley was 3-for-4. He’s only hit 3 doubles but he’s got a .479 OBP to go whith a .260 average. 16 walks against 6 strikeouts.
  • Charles Cutler went yard for the walkoff win.
  • Adam Veres got the start and lasted 5 innings with 2 ER. He walked 3, allowed 4 hits and struck out 6.
  • Ramon Delgado pitched 3 innings of 2 hit, scoreless baseball to finish off Cedar Rapids after the dreadful 5/8 beating from the day before.

I wonder how good Bravo is at changing oil, because that appears the direction his career path is headed.

    • Jeff Roman says:

Bravo was just called up from EST and he has been terrible in his short time at Quad Cities. He wasn’t bad at Johnson City last year.

Andrew Brown with 5 straight multi hit games, The last 5 hits for Tony Cruz all have been XBH’s and Steven Hill is deep into his first slump in Double-A going 3 for his last 34 .088 with 10 K’s but all 3 hits were XBH’s.

Someone forgot to tell Memphis the PCL is a hitters league they are dead last in Hitting and OPS and have scored the fewest runs but they are leading in ERA with fewest HR allowed with just 10 in 240 IP!

Stavinoha is loving the road trip Nick has hit in all 6 games and picked up 7 RBI, Freese has had back-to-back multi hit games and is 12-for-35 .343 with 5 XBH the last 9 games, Craig singled in his first AB to tease breaking out of his slump but thats all he got and is now 10 for his last 61 .164!

Royce Ring scoreless in last 7 outings ERA down to 0.79, and Todd 13.1 scoreless in his last 10 outings to drop ERA to 1.17, with Salas scoreless in 3 Memphis appearances to go along with Matt Scherer’s 1.35 ERA and Josh Kinney getting things ironed out Memphis’ pen is showing to be just as strong as its starting rotation has been.

ugh..yea, regression to the mean is a real [profanity removed]

  4. Vallon says:

Veres looks pretty good. .87 ERA in 20 innings with 25ks. is he really that dominant? didnt even know he existed till he lead Q-City to the playoffs.

  5. Pierce says:

Bryan Anderson is 11 for his last 29 w/ 4 extra base hits, so he seems to be coming along better.

Also, the Cardinals are once again going to be in an interesting position w/ relievers later in the year when Fernando Salas and Jess Todd are ready to be called up. Not to mention that Kinney could eventually push his way back into the bullpen.

  6. Dan in Haiti says:

unless injuries or ineffectiveness dictates, I doubt Todd will get called up. It would mean putting him on the 40 man roster and that will cost them another player in the rule 5 draft next year. If the bullpen does a decent job in St. L. Todd won’t see the big’s till next year, IMO. same with Samuel.

This weekend went to a couple Arizona State/Winthrop games. A couple guys really stood out on the ASU team. I’m not sure if they are really prospects, but Mike Leake looked really good in his start. Jason Kipnis also looked good. With the number of major leaguers that have come out of ASU, I would think these guys would have to at least be on the radar.

In speaking with some of the die hards in the stands, I found out that they didn’t think too highly of the Walrus. Apparently he was seen as having an attitude. Don’t ask them about Dustin Pedroia or Andre Ethier though or you won’t get them to shut up.
