Erik has two great draft discussions going on below. Join in there after you partake in the DFR.

I must be having some good pitching mojo this week as there are a couple of more good ones to report on.

Memphis 3, Reno 1

  • Blake Incarcerated was very good over 6.1 innings. He struck out 7 and only allowed 2 walks and 6 hits. He only allowed 1 run over those innings. That’s a good outing. Blake has been more good than bad this year – which is nice to see. Maybe this year we are spelling redemption B-L-A-K-E.
  • Royce Ring stranded Hawksworth’s last runner and struck out 1 over 1.2 innings.
  • Josh Kinney pitched the 9th for the save with 1 strikeout. Jess Todd must have been unavailable after pitching 2 innings last night.
  • At the plate, Donovan Solano, SS was the hero going 2-3 with 2 RBIs. He’s doing O.K. in AAA, but it is disturbing that he has not even taken 1 walk yet in AAA.
  • Brett Wallace, 3B also went 2-3.
  • Javier Brito, 1B and Jon Jay, CF both went 1-3 with a walk.

Springfield 6 , Arkansas 1

  • Trey Hearne one upped Hawksworth by pitching .2 more innings (7), also striking out 7. He didn’t allow any free passes which makes me very happy. He also allowed 2 less hits (4). Way to go Trey – that is a great outing.
  • Trey left little work to do for Marco Gonzalez and Eddie Degerman who each pitched 1 shutout inning.
  • Tyler Henley in RF went 3-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. He totally must have known that I was perplexed by his lack of power, because he’s been swinging a hot bat lately. It would be nice to see that come back.
  • Catcher Tony Cruz went 2-3 with 2 doubles and 1 walk. Also, no one tried to steal on him.
  • Daniel Descalso, 2B went 2-4.
  • Daryl Jones in LF went 2-4 with an RBI.
  • 1B Mark Hamilton went 1-2 with 2 walks and another HR.
  • SS Pete Kozma was the only sad trombone noise on the day for Springfield as he was 1 punch-out short of the golden sombrero.

Palm Beach 2, Sarasota 4

  • Nick Additon pitched 2 innings and gave up 1 run and was hung with the loss even though he didn’t have the worst outing of the day.
  • That belonged to Shaun Garceau who gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 2.1 innings.
  • He was bailed out by Chuckie Fick who stranded Garceau’s two runners.
  • Thomas Eager had a shutout inning.
  • Sam Freeman gave up a rare run in his inning of mop-up duty.
  • CF Adron Chambers went 2-3 with a triple.
  • RF Shane Peterson, DH Jose Garcia and 1B Matthew Arburr also each had a hit.

Quad Cities 6, Kane County 5

  • Josh Wilson continues his comeback tour and struggled tonight. He pitched 4.1 innings and struck out 4, but allowed 6 hits and 2 walks. He gave up 4 runs, 3 earned.
  • Gary Daley allowed 1 of Wilson’s 4 runs to score, but allowed no other runs over 3.2 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 2.
  • Ramon Delgado struck out 1 in his first inning of work, but gave up the potential winning run in the top of the 10th.
  • However, Alex Castellanos, 3B was the hero with a 2 run single in the bottom of the 10th.  He had 3 Ks otherwise.
  • Travis Mitchell, LF went 4-4 and led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple, but was unable to score to win the game.
  • Charles Cutler, DH went 4-5.
  • Paul Cruz, RF went 2-5 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Nico Vasquez, SS went 1-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Any word on why Additon was pulled so early? Hopefully not an injury or anything.

Promote Charles Cutler! The guy’s hitting .362, while the Palm Beach catchers are combining to hit .210.

  2. Redbird says:

This may be just a rumor but I have heard that Brett Wallace may be called up in Jun if Glaus is not going to be back until after the alstar break.

  3. HL says:

So, when a player strikes out 3 times in 1 game is it reprehensible to call it what my high school coach called it? The sheets?

  4. Redbird says:

Brett Wallace again had a great night..

  5. Wade says:

How dare you call Hawksworth “very good”?!?

Something I “tweeted” to erik … does Nico’s SLG concern anyone? I realize this is his first season in “all year” ball, but color me concerned.

  6. Redbird says:

Don’t be surprised if Brett Walace is called up at the begining of June.

  7. sluhser says:

So what’s Solano’s prospect status now? I’ve been on his bandwagon since A ball and am now pleased to see him succeeding in AAA at 21. This has to count for something.

    • azruavatar says:

He’s got a .277 wOBA at Memphis with a slash line of .283/.300/.270 — I’m not sure what that is supposed to count for. I’m still firmly off the bandwagon.

    • Jeff Roman says:

I’m glad he’s holding his own in AAA, but his age is the best thing he has going for him.

He hasn’t shown much power or the ability to get on base at a high rate yet in the minors. Power may come as he ages and OBP may come as he gets adjusted to the level, but he hasn’t shown it yet.

And he is still K’ing at a 15-20% rate.

Impressed about him being at AAA, but he hasn’t shown the ability to do more than he is doing now.

  8. Red Blazer says:

Anyone hear if Wallace will be up with the big club soon?

  9. Hugo says:

It keeps getting tossed around as an option for a DH but I would rather he stay in AAA for now.

  10. mattb says:

Hey Redbird, have you heard anything about Wallace coming up, maybe in June?

  11. LDC says:

Mo was on 1380am this morning and said that they are waiting on a Glaus up date the first week of June. At that point he’ll either be cleared for baseball activities or be done for the the year. When asked about Wallace he said he’d look outside the organization before they brought Wallace up. Looks like next year for the Walrus unless they have no other choice.

Was in Memphis for a business trip yesterday and was able to catch the Redbirds game. A few observations:

Wallace’s bat is for real. He hits the ball with authority – it really jumps off his bat. His singles were both solid hits, including one to left. He hit a foul ball home run, two foul liners down the right field line that just about killed the ball boy down there, and onother screamer foul down the left field line. Even his out was a very hard ground ball right at the second baseman – a few feet either way and it would have been a hit. Also had a walk that showed good plate discipline. He looks very smooth and comfortable at the plate – he has a gift and is comfortable using it. Hard to tell how the glove will play – he didn’t have much action at third but he appears adequate from what I saw. Range will be an issue but it looks to me like what he gets to will be handled as they should.

Hawksworth doesn’t have stuff that makes you say “wow” but he looked yesterday like he has really figured out how to pitch. He had very good location and had the Aces hitters off balance all day. I’m not enough of an expert to know if his stuff will play at the big league level, but if his command can be as good as I saw he could have a role at the big club as a long reliever/back of the rotation starter.

Pagnozzi is as good behind the plate as he is bad at the plate. He has no clue as a batter, but he is a very good catcher. Threw out two base stealers yesterday and had the third thrown out but Hoffpauir dropped the ball in his attempt to tag the runner. Looked a lot like Matheny behind the plate to me. That being said, I hope we never see his bat in St. Louis as he’ll be worse than our pitchers on the offensive side.

Was disappointed to see Brandon Yarbrough play LF until Craig came in as a defensive replacement. I wanted to see Craig at AAA after seeing him in Springfield – love his bat and hope he can find a spot in the field to play. Brandon had a very Chris Duncan-like circus catch at the wall that preserved Royce Ring’s stranding of Hawk’s baserunners.

Kinney’s delivery looked different that what I remembered from 2006. He was very effective and pitched well – I’ll have to look at the World Series video to see what might have changed.

Solano looked solid not spectacular. That’s until you realize that he’s just 21. If he progresses he could certainly be a big league middle infielder.

It was a beautiful day at the ballpark and a tidy game by both sides. Nice to see the Redbirds play well while having so many guys in St. Louis or hurt.

  13. Cj says:

I haven’t seen tommy pham in the DFR latley, any news on that ?

  14. Wade says:

Looks like Freese is out min. 2 months.

  15. Abe Froman says:

the organization is projecting a 40 man roster crunch at the end of the year. a number of guys have to be added or they will be left exposed. i think they would rather go with a short term veteran option than call up wallace.

  16. tom s. says:

freese out two months? allen craig must really feel like the only girl left in the bar at 2 AM.

yes, why was additon pulled after two? seems like he’s earned a little more leash.

solano joins tyler greene as another shortstop who still hasn’t gotten a walk with his new club.

doesn’t seem like steve hill is going to hack it defensively, but what’s the thought on cruz at C? seems like he’s doing well behind the dish at least based on the DFR.

i deeply hope hawksworth can convince someone we no longer need brad thompson. i think that’s a reasonable expectation.

can royce ring only pitch at the AAA level? many of our leftie relievers are showing up well there. both reyes and miller are doing well up in the bigs — any of them trade bait?

  17. HL says:

Is this the first time in Cardinals history that the GM said ‘we will look externally before we look internally’?

  18. Redbird says:

MO said outside the organization for help? Wow thats a surprise. But then again he doesn’t want to tip his hand and put too much pressure on Wallace. I still believe from reading the Stl Today, Wallace’s performance at AAA, and watching the big club. Wallace may be their best big bat option at 3rd if Glaus is not comming back. That is unless Mark McGwire is comming out of retirment and Pojols moves to 3rd and that is not going to happen.
