First and foremost, I’ll be out in San Francisco for the Friday and Saturday games for the big clubs, so if you are heading over to the games, let me know. I’ll raise a pint of Anchor Steam to you and give you some dap. I know, it doesn’t make sense for me to go all the way from the east coast to the west coast to catch a game, but it works for me for this weekend.

Also, Memphis’s game is starting at 10pm, so I’m not going to even chance going over that game, so I’ll update the post in the morning. Here’s the gameday. This will be your late night insomniacs’ anonymous Memphis game thread. HL should be lurking?

Enough of that – on to the prospects.

Shane Peterson gets a write-up from John Sickels over at Minor League Ball.

A second round pick by the Cardinals out of Long Beach State last June, Shane Peterson is hitting .308/.383/.453 with five steals, four homers, 13 walks, and 33 strikeouts in 42 games, 159 at-bats for High-A Palm Beach in the Florida State League. Scouts have always respected him as a pure hitter, and he showed sharp strike zone judgment in college, hitting .390/.506/.582 with 44 walks and 47 strikeouts last year in 213 at-bats for LBS. Lack of big home run power kept him out of the first round, as he offers less pure power than you ideally want from a corner outfielder or first baseman. His production has been respectable this year, though his strike zone judgment has taken a downswing against more advanced pitching. I gave him a Grade C+ in the book and will stick with that for now.

Another prospect fav Arquimedes Nieto is apparently not blinding the Midwest League with science or pure heat. He rarely hits 90 MPH on his the radar gun, but does mix his pitches well. He also has been known to start batters off with his offspeed pitches and bring them back to his fastball.

Peterson was showing off his lack of pure power today with 2 singles and Nieto did not blind West Michigan with anything.

Memphis , Portland (too late for this printing) – remember the days we used to accept that excuse that from newspapers?

(HL: I’ll fill this in, as I try to see through the blurry tear drenched eyes of mine still running over by my Cavs blowing their chance at history)

Memphis 2, Portland 7

  • Tyler Greene, the Greene who should be the starting SS in St. Louis, was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a Run Scored. He also stole 2 bases.
  • Allen Craig was 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Nobody McNoOne got all the other hits. As in, no one else got a hit.
  • Brett Wallace took the Triple K’s. Still waiting on a ruling about using the other ‘saying’ for it.
  • Blake Hawksworth didn’t finish strong letting the Sea Dogs blow it open in the 6th. He gave up 6 runs (5 ER) in 6 innings. He walked 1, struck out 4 and was tagged for 8 hits.
  • Matthew Scherer struck out 2, walked 1 in his 1 inning of 1 hit work.
  • Charlie Manning wasn’t his normal LOOGY self, giving up a run on 2 hits in his lone inning. He walked a guy a struck out 2.

Palm Beach 3, Daytona 2

  • The Cardinals scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. They scored the 2 runs on a botched double play. Youch.
  • Young Richard Castillo started and went 7 innings giving up 2 runs (1 earned). The error was his, however. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks, but did strike out 5. I’d ideally like to see more Ks and less hits and walks (wouldn’t we all), but not a bad outing by the kid.
  • Blake King struck out the side and allowed a walk.
  • Adam Reifer vultured the win with 2 strikeouts and allowed 1 hit.
  • Colt Sedbrook, 2B went 3-3 with a double and 2 runs scored.
  • Shane Peterson, RF (mentioned above) was 2-4 with 1 RBI.
  • Adron Chambers, CF also had a hit.

Quad Cities 4, Somewhere in West Michigan 8

  • Archimedes Nieto got touched up in his 4 innings. He gave up 5 runs in 4 innings among other carnage.
  • Scott McGregor followed Nieto and wasn’t much better over his 1.2 innings.
  • David Carpenter stranded 2 of McGregor’s runners and struck out 1 over his 1.1 innings.
  • Ramon Delgado pitched 1 mop-up inning giving up 1 hit.
  • Charles Cutler, C continues to beat up the MWL with another 2-3 with an RBI. He only allowed 1 stolen base in 1 opportunity.
  • Alex Castellanos, 3B was 2-4 with a double.
  • Jairo Martinez, DH was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Fredrick Parejo, RF was 1-2 with 2 walks.

Blake King’s legend grows. Or something.

  2. tom s. says:

Carp the younger has had several good outings this year. Prospect?

  3. Bud Smith says:

Off topic, but does anybody have a feel for what it might take to steal Brandon Wood from the Angels. Could play 3rd or SS this year and SS next year.

  4. [...] is a classic A’s pick-up: excellent strike-zone judgment (.377 minor league OBP), light on power, high-percentage base stealer (12-for-13 this year). He’s hitting .284 at Double-A [...]
