5 games today as May comes to a close. Straight to the DFR.
Memphis 4, Iowa 3 (7 innings)
- Tyler Greene was 1-for-3 with a HR and 2 strikeouts.
- Allen Craig was 1-for-2 with a double and a HBP.
- Matt Pagnozzi again gets the start over Anderson. Per John Marecek on twitter: “La Russa: When they add the 3rd catcher in September, Matt Pagonzzi figures to be the guy“. Madness. Yes, I’m on twitter. No, I’m not proud about it. I don’t really tweet so much as use it like an RSS feed.
- Bryan Anderson was allowed to pinch hit and drew a walk.
- Blake Hawksworth went 7 strong allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 5.
Memphis 2, Iowa 4 (Completion of the game begun 5/3)
- Jon Jay was 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Brett Wallace was 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Adam Ottavino walked 4 in 3.2 innings and struck out 3. He was tagged for 2 runs.
- Kat Maekawa decided to make him feel better by also walking 4 in 3.2 innings. Teammates stick up for each other.
- Matt Scherer (quietly sticking it too all of us for complaining about him being on the 40-man) pitched 5 outs with 2 Ks and a walk.
Springfield 2, Corpus Christi 8
- Daryl Jones was 2-for-5 with a double.
- Daniel Descalso went 0-for-3 but drew 2 walks.
- Curt Smith was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Tyler Henley was 2-for-4 with a HR. He’s now slugging .524 on the year with an ISO just under .200.
- Ryan Kulik was torched for 6 runs in 5 innings. He allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Not a good start.
- Eduardo Sanchez pitched 2 scoreless frames walking 2 and striking out 1.
- Adron Chambers was 2-for-5 with a double.
- Aaron Luna went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-4.
- Another sketchy outing from Richard Castillo. He pitches 6.1 innings despite walking 5 batters. He struck out 3 and allowed 8 hits. He was scored on 3 times.
- Casey Mulligan took the blown save with 2 ER on 3 hits and a walk.
- Travis Mitchell was 3-for-5 with a double.
- Charles Cutler was 3-for-5. He’s hitting .386 on the season.
- Frederick Parejo went 3-for-5 with a double.
- Gary Daley struck out 8 in 5.2 innings. Unfortunately he also walked 4 and allowed 4 hits (1 HR) for 3 ER.
- David Carpenter, Jason Motte 3.0, struck out 2 in an inning of work.

Another solid outing by Hawksworth. He’s quietly putting together a pretty good year.
Are they waiting until Cutler’s AVG reaches .400 before they promote him, or what’s the deal there? I fail to see the point in keeping him at QC.
That Cutler thing is really odd… .386 avg. Just like the Matt Pagnoz thing over Anderson. What are they doing? Are they trying to hide Anderson or something. Mo needs a head check. Just like in the StL Today where he said they had no idea about K Greene’s mental break down issues and they are considering fileing a grievance against San Diego not disclosing his problem. I think they sound file a grievance. Sounds to me like SanDiego was aware of his problem and wanted to do amything they could to dump him on another team. And they found the sucker Cardinals take him and recieved two prospects that don’t have mental disorders in return.
Brett Wallace was once again the star of the show today. Brett “Big All Over” Wallace went a combined 1 for 5 today with 1BB and 2SO. The guy is fast becoming a living legend in the Cardinals minor leagues. Whats next!!!
Here’s an entry (a 100% true one, officially at least!) for the future file of Brett Wallace Facts:
Brett Wallace went 1-2 with a walk in AAA on May 3. He wasn’t called up to AAA until May 16.
Im not trying to put anyone down here at all but Bryan Anderson was an inflated prospect. In reality we should have traded him for major league talent when we could have. This may happen for other prized prospects we have too. Im not trying to be a downer just realistic.
Wallace has started to suck at AAA, not worried about him turning it around, but if you look at his stats now there is no way you would want to bring him up.
As for Anderson, he was always a projection prospect. He projected to have more power than he currently does and that power never really materialized (though this year his ISO suggests it might be taking shape) Right now Pags has the better OBP (even with about 40 points less in BA), Anderson is leading in SLG and OPS but Pags is pretty much tied with him in wOBA. To me I don’t see why Anderson isn’t starting but it seems Tony saw something in Pags that they are trying to pull out and they didn’t see anything like that in Anderson. Add to that the fact that Anderson has a negative defensive reputation (deserved or not) and you get a feeling for why they are giving him less playing time recently.
seems like memphis’ offense could use a dj, delasco, and henley inspired infusion
jermaine curtis is not a third baseman…they need to move him to second already
Long-time reader, infrequent commenter. I have a question about the DFR’s, and the stats you list for hitters.
With an uber-prospect like Brett Wallace, would it be possible to see his results for every game? It seems like you usually list his stats if he has a good, great, or terrible game, but I’d like to see how he’s doing game-by-game, even if it’s a boring 1-4 with a single line. Right now, I’ll see him go 0-4, then nothing for a week, then 3-4. It’s hard to get an idea of how he’s doing overall.
If this goes against your philosophy for some reason, let me know. Just a curious reader. Thanks!
I’m not sure that listing every 1-for-3 effort is the right answer but if you don’t have a good idea of how he’s doing overall, then that means we’re losing the forest for the trees. Ideally, you’d see periodic updates on his overall stat line and whether it’s good or bad a la Cutler’s average above.
The only reason I’m hesitant to list every game is that it could reall bog down the DFRs if we start doing it for every “top” prospect. It’s hard to draw that line as to who makes the cut and who doesn’t.
Here is a quick update on Brett Wallace:
AAA (2009)
wOBA: .285
OPS: .635
ISO: .086
BABIP: .318
So he isn’t unlucky yet he has been bad since he first got called up to AAA.
AA (2009)
wOBA: .390
OPS: .840
ISO: .156
BABIP: .348
So he might have been a bit lucky in AA but he was exactly what we expected.
All told I think he should still be in AA getting some more experience at that level.
Tyler Henley is quietly having one of the better seasons for any cardinals prospect. He was a favorite of mine from the moment he was drafted. He has more walks than strike outs and an ops over .900.
Its very nice to see tyler green to continue to hit. He is just an example of why you need to have patience with prospects. A few years ago i had big doubts he would ever sniff the big leagues but he played very well in stl this year and has been one of Memphis’s best hitters. And the best part is he is not an outfielder!!
Glad to see Aaron Luna back in the mix–hope they’re gonna give him time to see if he can stick at 2B.
Agree with your point about patience Kyle. I got the feeling that when the Cards sent Tyler Greene to winter ball in 2008, it was something of a make or break period. It looked like Tyler was playing winter ball for a spot on the 40 man roster. Lucky for the organization, he showed well in winter ball and has built upon that in 2009 to this point.

Wallace+Greene have HRs so far, Wallace’s a Solo Shot, Greene a 3 run, Wallace is at 1st, Rowlett is at 3B, Boggs starting (meaning he wasn’t called up like I thought he would be)
Az, if you guys want to start listing every game for certain players I would suggest limiting it to FR/BA top 10 rankings and only going with those guys daily. Or just have a weekly/monthly recap of stat lines for the top 25 or something. I personally don’t have an issue since I follow the links quite often but that might help those that only come here.
There is an easy way to see all the boxscores for each days play. Just click on the link
at the top of each teams highlights/lowlights , for instance click on Memphis/Iowa and it brings a page from Milb which shows the complete boxes , huzzah!
Az, thanks for the reply. I agree that it would be difficult to draw the line if you started listing certain players everyday. Maybe you could periodically update us on his averages, maybe once a week or something. FutureRedbirds is my only source for the minor league teams, I don’t augment this with any other resources. Thanks again.
Not sure what all the fuss is about, doesn’t anyone realize that each step up carries a whole set of rules and there are adjustment periods for each player? The game changes each time you move up, bigtime.
Adjustment might be right away, might take a season. There is such a thing as scouting, it takes about two games before word is out about a top prospect, especially in AAA. I would not be surprised if he isn’t even seeing anything to hit, we know he can hit, he now has to find a way to adjust what’s being thrown to him.
Oh then you got the next guy telling you to change this and change that. Now you got to work on your stuff all over again, but hopefully those adjustments are to make you better. yah, that really does happen.
Kozma, move him up, another example Mulligan, you all said move him up, now he is going through his adjustment period. I am awaiting the negative remarks. You want them all moved quickly then you think they suck because they don’t perform to what you think they should, having no clue what’s going on each day in their lives..
These guys have no control over what the organization wants or does with them, they don’t ask, do you want to move up, do you want to move down? You go where they give you a ticket, and most of the time it’s because someone is hurt, not because you might be ready. You do what they tell you to do, even if it means you might have some crappy ass games for weeks.
Give them all a break.
I agree I always thought Bryan Anderson was a bit overrated, but he’s still a good catching prospect and should be playing. I always thought of him as a .280, 5-10 HR guy with slightly below average defense. This makes Yadi much more valuable so I’ve always wanted to keep Yadi.
My problem is this seems to be Anthony Reyes Pt.II, a top prospect who we don’t want with the big league club who for some reason we won’t trade and whose value we are purposely destroying.
