Hey everyone, sorry for the late DFR today. I fell asleep after a long red-eye back from SF and day at work.

But, enough of the excuses, on to the DFR! We went 3-0, so at least the players weren’t jet lagged, but Springfield missed out on the fun.

Memphis 8, OKC 4

  • ClaMo started the game and went 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. He only struck out 2. 9 of his 15 outs were on the ground.
  • Matt Scherer and Royce Ring tag teamed the shutout 7th.
  • Josh Kinney tried to finish the game and couldn’t quite get there. He pitched 1.2 innings giving up 1 hit and 3 walks. He struck out 2.
  • Because Kinney made it a save situation with all the runners, Jess Todd came in and got the save with a strikeout to end the game.
  • Joe Mather, RF, welcome back to the land of the living, he went 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.
  • Jarrett Hoffpauir, 2B, went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a walk.
  • Bryan Anderson, C, went 1-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs. He was also hit by a pitch.
  • Tyler Greene, SS, went 1-3, but what stood out was his 2 walks.

Palm Beach 2, Lakeland 1

  • Chuckie Fick started the game and went 5 innings. He gave up 0 runs on 3 hits and 0 walks. He struck out 3. 7 of his 11 outs were on the ground. Nice job Chuckster. It’s hard to come up with a nickname for someone who’s name is already a nickname.
  • Kris Linares, back from Springfield pitched a zeroed out inning.
  • Elvis Hernandez, also back from Springfield pitched a shutout inning.
  • Bad Blake King showed up and walked the two batters he faced.
  • Casey Mulligan stranded the two runners even though he struck out 0 and walked 1 of his own. There’s a magic trick for ya.
  • Adam Reifer had an Izzy-like save, but got the job done in the end.
  • Shane Peterson, RF went 2-3 with a triple and a walk.
  • Aaron Luna, DH, welcome back, went 1-3 with a solo HR.
  • Jermaine Curtis, 2B went 2-3.
  • Chris Swauger with 3 Ks will be wearing the leprechaun’s hat tomorrow.

Quad Cities 9, Burlington 3

  • Kevin Thomas started this game and only went 3.1 innings and 2s were wild. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. 0 strikeouts for Thomas.
  • Ramon Delgado allowed Thomas’s 1 runner to score, but didn’t allow any of his own runners to score over 1.2 innings. Selfish. He took the win.
  • Jason Buursma allowed 1 run on 2 hits in his 2 innings of work. He struck out 2 against 0 walks.
  • Joel Pichardo continues to impress since up from EST with 1 inning of shutout work with 1 strikeout.
  • David Carpenter finished off the game with 1 walk and 1 strikeout in 1 inning.
  • Brett Lilley, 3B went 2-5 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
  • Alex Castellanos, 2B said “That looks good, I’ll have what he’s having” and had the same line, but he added a side dish of a stolen base.
  • Hometown boy, Travis Mitchell, CF went 2-5 as well.

Very nice to see Mather back, hopefully this means he is healthy?

Shhh, ignore that “private” conversation going on in the “chirps”….

  2. Neil T. says:

It’s really nice to see Alex Castellanos taking off. He hit really well in his debut last season but could do nothing over the first month of this season. He seems to have figured things out.

  3. Rob says:

Good to see Joe Mather starting to hit. I’ve got to believe his spring problems had to do with the wrist. I would like to see them give him some time at 3rd base. Who knows, he still could be the guy to fill in on the big league level, at least until Glaus gets back.

I don’t know why I found this so interesting, but anyone that lives in Batavia can sign up to be a host family for the rookie level team this year.

If anyone is in Batavia reading here, it sounds like a very good experience for all involved.

I really hope Castellanos continues to put it together. I know he is small and he is from a very small school, but I really like his skill set from reading about him. Seems like he has a little pop and some speed. His size makes me think he is perfect for converting to 2B which would be where his bat would profile in the bigs.

I’m getting a bit nervous about Walrus, who is arguably the one guy in the whole system that I most want to succeed. He didn’t appear in this summary, and looking at the box score, I see he went 0/5. Did anybody see the game? How does he look? Is anything coming out of the organization on what’s going on with him? He has been moved up VERY aggressively, and while I think that’s a good thing on balance, it would cease to be if his struggles of the moment start messing with his head.

  7. arch support says:

Tyler Greene, you big tease. Be still my beating heart.

  8. tom s. says:

glad to see tyler’s improvements continuing at the AAA level. something i forgot to ask — how many rookies get an RBI on their first ML walks? wasn’t tyler’s walk with the bases loaded the first one he got with the big club.

anyway, i think we’ll see tyler again in st. louis this year, and i hope he’s able to carry over this new-found on-base performance.

  9. Wade says:

memory fails me right now, but I thought his first hit and RBI were on a swinging bunt

  10. I’m really proud to see Alex Catellanos (casty) for shor excelling in what he loves to do. I personally met him and he is a great athlete and nice kid. Started a little slow but like anything else in life it’s the long run that counts. For a kid that just recently lost his only brother (per WhAt I’ve found out about him). He has shown he can even put sadness aside and still do what needs to be done to succed. Keep it going
    Casty.

  11. Grant says:

Fun Fact: Travis Mitchell and I were born on the same day.

I thought it was kinda cool anyway.

  12. tom s. says:

wade — my comment was unclear — how many rookies’ first BB drives in a run? the first-time event was the BB not the RBI.

  13. mstreeter06 says:

Fun Fact: I played and graduated with Travis Mitchell. Great kid, friend, and most importantly, great baseball player who also was our hs quarterback. Rooting for him to do well!
