A Hernandez:Jay comparison is probably reasonable, red, but I think Hernandez/DJ is better. The main reason is age. Hernandez is younger(!) than DJ, and three years younger than Jay. Of course Jay is one level higher in the minor-league food chain than the other two, but that one year doesn't really balance the age difference, which is quite substantial at that stage of one's career.

A package of Jay, Boggs and Degerman for McLouth wouldn't be grossly lopsided, and might be good for the team -- provided that it could then make some other deal with a surplus outfielder (plus other talent) to shore up the infield issues. Pittsburgh would never have gone for that, though. Jay will probably never be more than Gorkys Hernandez Lite (and Old). Why settle for that when they could get the real item?

For the McLouth trade, I think the closest comps would actually be something like this:

Hernandez= Jon Jay- both excellent defenders with offensive games that feature little power, but decent on-base skills and some speed to be creative.

Morton= Mortensen or Boggs- because the first two have similar names, and Boggs because he's seen as a 4th/ 5th starter possible bullpen guy with a little bit of ML experience. I think either Boggs or Mort is better than Morton (this is getting confusing), but not be so much that you can't make the call.

Locke= um, how about, Trey Hearne. Or Degerman. Or pretty much any other pitcher in the system that doesn't really look to be a contributor at the ML level, beyond occasional stopgap appearances in the bullpen.

Aargh. Sorry to keep correcting myself, but back on the McLouth trade: BP lists Locke as among the "just missed" people on the Atlanta prospect list, so they perhaps value him more highly than I implied. Meanwhile, Charlie Morton does have some (rather undistinguished) major-league time on his record, which I had missed. Possibly Boggs is a better comparable for him than Mort. The basic conclusion remains the same: I'd be very unhappy making the equivalent trade for McLouth.

I don't mean to doubt anyone's word, but I would find it a bit surprising if Todd is the pitcher promoted to replace Loshe. It would mean that the Cards have decided to replace Loshe in the rotation with Thompson, rather than bringing up Boggs again or promoting Walters or Hawksworth. Thompson did throw five fine innings a couple of nights ago, and neither Boggs nor Walters was all that impressive earlier this season. Perhaps I'm talking myself into believing that Todd might be promoted.
