I didn’t doubt HL and his sources for a minute and now it is official.

Cardinal Beat has the word.

Todd will be added to the 40-man roster as well.

UPDATE: So, Todd is promoted because Boyer is DFA’d to Memphis.  Reliever for reliever makes more sense.  Bring up a fresh arm, send a tired one down.

UPDATE 2: Matt Leach has all the info as usual on the follow-up moves.  In Summary:

Boyer DFA -> Todd to STL

Thurston’s wife is going to give birth soon -> T.Greene to STL

K.Lohse DL’ed -> Mather to STL

Again (since I just posted this in the DFR) here is a link that RB found from the Kilgore News Herald about it:
    http://www.kilgorenewsherald.com/news/2009/0603/Sports/027.html

    • Jeff Roman says:

I love that article, because the author obviously just called Jess Todd’s mom and asked what was going on.

  2. Kilgore says:

About time an article came out, I was beginning to worry they changed their minds.

  3. Redbird says:

Wow! I was hoping that Matt Sherer or Blake Hawksworth would get called up. But I guess well see what Todd has.

  4. theredbaaron says:

That’s why I liked that article so much too. It wasn’t ‘club sources’ or anything. It was the guy from the paper down the street on the phone, “Hey, Mrs. Todd. So, what’s up?”

  5. Arthur Winner says:

Even assuming that Thompson takes over as the starter in place of Lohse for now, what is Todd’s role? He’s a young right-handed closer and presumably the Cardinals moved him to that role (as opposed to keeping him as a starter) because they think he’s suited to that. But we have a log-jam of right-handed closer-types — Franklin, Motte, Perez. So what is Todd going to do?

Here’s what I think. I think they are either bringing Todd up to fill Perez’ role, whom they then intend to include in a deal for a third-baseman in the near future. Or they are bringing Todd up to showcase him at the major-league level to then include him in a deal. But otherwise having three young closers-in-waiting on the major league roster doesn’t make sense.

  6. RedC says:

I have to believe Todd is being auditioned to take over Perez’s spot, with the possibility Perez is dealt to Cleveland in a deal for DeRosa. The club has an option on Franklin for next year, so they really only need to keep one of Motte or Perez. It would be nice to keep those guys and deal Boggs, but what do you do for your sixth starter? Sign Glavine or Penny?

  7. t7rick says:

I would rather have 4 right handed closer types than 4 right handed long relief types. I don’t think it is ever a bad idea to have four lock down relievers in the pen even if they are all right handed. Not saying calling up Todd is the right thing considering the ever crowding 40-man, but just because four guys have “closer” type stuff doesn’t mean one or more should be excluded from the roster on that basis.

  8. Hugo says:

I agree, I love that article for much the same reason

  9. Redbird says:

Sorry but there is no way that the Organization is trading Perez or Mott or Todd for anyone. Todd also does not have the closer fast ball that Motte ot Perez has either. Franklin is also 36 years old and will be 37 next year. I think this is what it is. The cards are bringing up someone that they feel can fill a spoke at the moment and get him some experience. Also, the organization has litteraly 4 third baseman. If Joe Mather continues to show well he is the one that will and Brian Barden sent down or JT.

Also if you thinking that they may make any trades don’t be surprised if Tood Wellenmeyer, Baby Duncan, and Ankeils names come up and are traded. All three are basically holding back other talent and taking inings and AB’s away from guys that could be more productive.

    • Redbird says:

Sorry about the typo’s but Joe Mather will be brought up to play 3B is he continues to hit without any problems. I watched the last 2 games and the ball is flying off his bat just like last year before the injury.

  10. Wade says:

Just a correction to the update … T.Greene and Mather won’t both be called up. When Lohse goes on DL they will call up one of the two since Thursty will be out after the baby. I’m thinking Greene.

    • HL says:

I would imagine both will be called up since they can put Thurston on bereavement and that will free up 2 roster spots between Lohse+Thurston.

Those two spots would be Mather and Greene. When Thurston comes back, if Lohse is healthy, Thompson would go down.

  11. alex says:

    Worst roster management ever.

  12. Redbird says:

Don’t be surprised if you see this infield in the near future.

    Joe Mather 3B
    Tyler Greene SS
    Brendan Ryan 2B

  13. Zach says:

I don’t know what to make of any of this but I am happy to see Todd get his chance. I hope Mather can put a stop to this third base merry-go-round and just mash the ball. It sounds like Greene is only up for a few days but that’s a nice bat to have off the bench if necessary

  14. Wade says:

minimum 3 days for bereavement, maximum 7 … just for those interested.

  15. RedC says:

HL has it right. Greene is ready to go now. Mather looks like he’s improving rapidly, but they’ve got four or five days to make the decision. I would also like to see Barden down and Boggs inserted if Lohse shows any signs of slippage.

  16. cardsfan1 says:

I think it is a little premature to say that Greene and Mather have been called up. They have not been. Both are playing in the Memphis game right now. From the Leach blog I read it as he was speculating as to who they may call up. Maybe I am just misreading it.

  17. Redbird says:

Just wondering about the Boyer DFA. That is how the Cards aquired him with the Barton trade. Atlanta DFA’d Boyer and that’s when they worked out a trade with the Cards. Does this mean that he has accepted the DFA to Memphis or does he have to clear waivers or somthing like that? I thought there were 10 days in which the club has to work out a trade or out right release him or has he agreed to do this (Go to Memphis)?

  18. Redbird says:

Found this on MLB. Does this make any sense to do this to Boyer after trading Brian Barton for him?

A day after pitching five innings of relief, right-hander Blaine Boyer was thanked by being designated for assignment. The Cardinals have 10 days to trade Boyer, release him or waive him with the purpose of sending him outright to the Minor Leagues. Righty Jess Todd’s contract was purchased from Triple-A Memphis to take Boyer’s spot on the roster. The move adds depth to a bullpen that has worked hard in recent days.

  19. sluhser says:

Do they really call it a bereavement list for when your wife is giving birth?

  20. RedC says:

    Sluhser–

I think they wait until they see what came out. ;-o

  21. JMG says:

I agree with Alex. Worst roster mgmt EVER. I live in Atlanta and have seen Boyer pitch well (before July 2008) and not well. If the brass thought enough of him to trade Barton to get him (a guy we sat on the roster all of 2008 – a significant investment in my book), how could you DFA him (especially after 5 pretty good innings on Wed)? I see no difference between Boyer and Thompson at this point. And I clearly do not understand encumbering the roster with Todd. I noticed that Boyer was DFA’d during the 8th inning of last night’s Carp gem. That combined with our inability to get a clutch base hit (unless Albert is hitting) forced me to go to bed in a bad mood.

  22. The Redbird says:

Jess Tood did not look very good at all. Watched the game tonight and the comentators remarks were “sub par major league fast ball (TOO SLOW), lack of location, is slider tempting enough to get major league hitters to swing at”.
