Have you seen ‘Old School’? Did you like the movie? Do you like the name Carlos?
If you answered yes to the first two questions, then “The Hangover” is the movie for you. It is, without question, the funniest movie in the slapstick gutter humor variety that I have seen since Old School. I laughed from about 5 minutes in the entire way through the movie. Just constant hilarity. If you answered yes to the third question, than this movie is definitely for you.
The farm system goes 2-for-2 including an ugly Memphis game and a starter that continues to go winless in Palm Beach.
[Retraction update after the jump as well - azru]
- Jarrett Hoffpauir, who has rarely appeared on DFR’s this year was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Mark Shorey, also not a prospect, went 2-for-3.
- Allen Craig was 0-for-3 and Brett Wallace was 1-for-4. Wallace got the start at third with Craig at first.
- Adam Ottavino allowed 7 ER while recording just 5 outs. He walked 4 and allowed 4 hits. This is looking more and more like a lost season.
- Matthew Scherer allowed 2 hits in 3.1 scoreless innings.
- Royce Ring pitched a scoreless frame lowering his ERA to 0.42 this season. He’s got 16 strikeouts and 6 walks in 22 innings. No, he’s not a candidate to get called up barring an injury to Dennys Reyes or Trevor Miller.
- Tony Cruz was 2-for-3 with a walk. With no defined position and a .715 OPS he’s basically fallen off the prospect map.
- Steven Hill was 2-f0r-4 with a double.
- Jim Rapoport was 2-for-4.
- Trey Hearne only lasted 5 innings. He allowed 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out 2 and walking 3. Not his best venture but we’ve seen worse.
- Tyler Norrick struck out 1 and walked 2 in a scoreless 8th. Norrick has been reborn in the pen with 45 strikeouts in 34 innings against 16 walks. You’d like to see the walks come down but he’s a viable lefty reliever in mid-2010 with luck.
- Francisco Samuel got the call for his 12th save allowing just 1 hit in the 9th.
- Adron Chambers was 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Colt Sedbrook and Aaron Luna were 2-for-4. They each drew a walk.
- Richard Castillo allowed 8 hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out 5 and walked 2 allowing 4 ER. Castillo’s had a lot of things go wrong as his strikeout rate plummeted and he’s allowed 65 hits in 54 innings. I’m tempted to say that he was overhyped by the Cardinal Front Office (read: Jeff Luhnow [Update: After several minutes with google, I can't seem to find the interview I was recalling. The closest I get to is a quote from Luhnow that says he was "an exciting prospect". As such, I've got to take a step back from what I said. I still contend that Castillo was overhyped but it would be unfair of me to point the finger at Luhnow or the Front Office.]) but I’m willing to give him more time. Gracious of me, I know.
- Alex Castellanos was 2-for-4 with a walk.
- Charles Cutler is bored with low-A. He went 4-for-4 and is hitting .397 on the season. Ridonkulous. O ya, 1 hit went over the fence.
- Jared Bogany was 2-for-4 with a walk.
- Arquimedes Nieto went 6 innings allowing 5 hits. He struck out 1 and walked 1. The heat ray wasn’t working tonight.
- David Carpenter allowed a hit and 2 walks while striking out 2. He managed to pitch a scoreless inning though.

Mark Shorey “not a prospect”? What? He’s hitting .303 in his first year at AAA Memphis.
Also, there have been rumors that the Cards may aquirer Brandon Wood from the Angels. He plays 3rd but has been playing SS for them at AAA. This would be an interesting aquisition the guys 6-3 210 and apparently can also play SS.
Brandon Woods profile:

Also, Jesse Todd looked horrible tonight for the Cards. His FB was in the 85 86 range and was having issues with location. Al R and Rick Horton said he appears to have a sub par fastball, trouble locating piches, and a slide that looked flat. Doesn’t sound like the same guy from Memphis.
Mark Shorey of the .402 slugging % is not a prospect.
Agreed. The Hangover was brilliant. “Question, and you may get this all the time, but, did… the real Caesar live here?”
Check that Shorey’s now hitting .322 after tonights game.
i’m not sure i recall luhnow hyping castillo, in fact i’m pretty sure i remember him sort of downplaying his prospect status. the gist i seem to remember getting was his stuff wasn’t really on par with the results, and they had more of a wait and see attitude.
deric mckamey otoh gave him high marks.
I’ll have to dig around. i thought I remember that but I could be wrong.
I’d like to start a petition to add the “plus/minus” feature back. I’d need to “minus” some comments.
Mark Shorey has a terrible BB/K ratio (has at every level), 6 extra base hits in 43 games, shows no sign that he has any speed and is in an outfield where there is Rasmus and Jones that are for sure better prospects, Stav and Mather that have MLB experience and decent #’s there, then Jay and Henley that I personally put above him. If he plays in big leagues, for more than just a filler, it’s with another team.
I like Brandon Wood but how much better would he be than Tyler Greene who they just promoted, seems to me like the same player. Wood maybe a little more power but Greene has more speed.
I am bias on Jess Todd and still have faith in him but you are right he didn’t look too sharp tonight but no Cardinal reliever did today and not sure you can write off on a pitcher after one game and one inning.
shorey for wood!
Wood is pretty much a 3B only now, his range at SS isnt something the pitch to contact Cards would like. So if you trade for him, your trading for present and future 3B. That is fine, I think he is a potential 30/100 guy, but then where does Wallace play, is he moved to the OF?
Wood wouldnt be cheap, he likely costs at least 2 of your top 10 prospects.
DeRosa makes so much more sense…not sure why that isnt their #1 target…Cleveland does a similar stat base model to evaluate players like the Cards do..so both org’s should rate players closely.
Do teammates at memphis ever follow hoffpauir onto the field calling out, “dead man walking”? Anybody ever look up ar him and say, “you’re still here?” We know we’ll need the 40-man space soon. Trade him, move him through waivers and off the 40-man, whatever. He’s just done.
Cutler and descalso are very high on the “promote” list.
I second both the plus/minus idea and the sentiment behind it.
Up for sugestions just a hypothetical:
Do you think the Angels would take Javir Brito, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Matt Pagnozzi, and Mark Shorey straight up for Brandon Wood?
How is 5-for-1 a ‘straight up’?
I wouldn’t worry about Todd. He didn’t look very good tonight, but it’s only one outing. I’m sure nerves played a role, and tonight wasn’t the greatest situation to make your MLB debut.
What’s the opinion on Aaron Luna? Does he have the glove to play 2B full-time?
Promote Charlie Cutler!
I think that makes 8 triples for Chambers now.
I’m sure the Angels would absolutely jump at the chance to get Javier Brito, by the way…………………….Hell maybe if we add Ian Ostlund, Casey Rowlet, and Mike Folli they’ll even throw in Weaver.
Apologies, I’m gonna go now
Blake Hawksworth was called up after the game last night
Brandon Wood looks interesting for a long term solution to 3B.
With Greene/Ryan up the middle and Luds and Raz in the OF maybe we can afford to keep Albert around huh?
“Do you think the Angels would take Javir Brito, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Matt Pagnozzi, and Mark Shorey straight up for Brandon Wood?”
I can’t tell if this is a joke or not. But if not, why would the Angels trade $1 for five nickels? (and calling this motley crew “nickels” is generous; more like green pennies)
“DeRosa makes so much more sense…not sure why that isnt their #1 target…Cleveland ”
Agree but I think a Cleveland infielder went on the DL and it takes away from Cleveland’s infield depth for the time being (making DeRosa less expendable for the time being). I’d be surprised if we acquired a true 3B prospect. It would be hard for us to get a high caliber 3B prospect without giving up Wallace. I’d rather be patient and give Freese another shot at 3B when he returns from the DL than give up Wallace.
yeah I don’t know who Javir Brito is but he’d have to be a potential star for the Angels to make that trade. Hoffpauir, Shorey and Pagnozzi have zero trade value.
and wanting to plus tom s. I’m guessing we save the Monty Python reference for once he’s off the 40 man … actually, I guess it works right now.

oh, there was a “itching to ‘minus” comment in there, but I think I accidentally used “” instead of ( )
I think it is a little early to call Ottavino a lost season. It wouldn’t have mattered if he would have given up one run. The team doesn’t score when he takes the mound.
Also, Ottavino’s ERA for the month of May was just a little over 2 and he still has yet to earn a win.
C’mon, we’re beyond using ERA and and wins to evaluate players. Ottavino was walking 15% of batters in may (that’s terrible) and striking out 20% (that’s good but not great). He’s not a groundball pitcher so he’s got to strike guys out. He needs to turn things around in a major way to save the season.
How many more years do the cards have control of Ottavino or do they have to add him to the 40 man to protect him from Rule 5 this year?
My question is , who really cares if Adam Ottavino is left off of the forty man roster and is taken in the rule five draft?
He’s a reliever, he always has been a reliever. No matter who what the man that drafted him says. Got plenty of those already.
Redbird-they have to put him on the 40 man this year.
Another interesting player that have to protect this year is Tyler Norrick. He has proven himself to be one of the best left handed relief pitchers in the system this year. I don’t think the cards are going to protect him over some other guys.
Thanks cardsfan1. If thats the case on Ottavino I doubt he will be protected as well.
Kazahkstanny Danny
The guys a starter.
